Injury List: Round 5

Kalani White — glandular fever / available

Bayley Fritsch — foot / Test

Changkuoth Jiath — calf / 2-3 weeks

Shane McAdam — Achilles / 2-3 weeks

Patrick Cross — thumb / 3-4 weeks

Jake Bowey — foot / 4-5 weeks

Tom Campbell — neck / TBC

Jack Viney — Achilles / TBC

Trent Rivers — TBC / TBC

Viney still TBC is disappointing.

I'm having real doubts that we'll see him in action this season.

Not really. It's a serious long-term injury and gets hard to narrow down returning dates. I suspect we'll get a clearer picture over the coming couple of weeks - though yes, is going to be a while.

The lack of any real info on Rivers is a bit odd, especially when you compare the communication on him and Fritsch.

It's all pretty vague. Was (surprising many people) omitted but also he had/has 'physical soreness', but then he isn't on the MFC injury list. One foot in the 'dropped' camp and one foot in the 'it's not a injury, it's soreness, but it's going to be mentioned alongside him being omitted' camp.

Early days but yeh it’s a bad injury for sure.

Hopefully a couple more weeks and he’ll have a timeline.

I heard on radio he’s supposedly looking around R13, presume that would’ve been through VFL for a few weeks too.

McAdam has been at 2-3 weeks for an eternity now! I wonder why he’s never considered bad enough to be a TBC, but never able to progress either. Something doesn’t add up.

I know he’s a long way down the pecking order and most likely out the door at years end, but it would be nice to see him get one last crack at it.

Surprised Milky played the game out, no wonder he had limited output.

"Trent Rivers continues to manage a knee concern and will remain on the sidelines over the next fortnight.

“Trent has been dealing with ongoing knee soreness,” Griffith said. “We’ve continued to work with him to ensure that he can get back to the brand of football that we all love to see from him.

“Unfortunately, after the match simulation on the weekend, he’s pulled up with soreness, which means we’ll now focus on reconditioning his strength and power over the next two weeks.”

Don't think we'll get another season out of Melksham. Or perhaps even much of this one. Which is a shame, when he's up and about he still has a lot to offer.

Watch this space - in 12 weeks it will say McAdam 2-3 weeks.

No disrespect to the bloke, but I think it’s time they put McAdam on the long term injury list and write him off.

Blokes body is made of tissue paper.

Our half back line will be interesting.

No Salem, no Bowey, no Rivers, no Jiath. All feasibly best 23 players who can rotate through there.

Going to sound harsh and ruthless but the club need to start having discussions with both Tom Campbell and Shane McAdam about retirement before the mid year draft.

Lets be honest, we ain't seeing them in red and blue ever again and right now they're just clogging up the list knowing we are going to get zero value back.

Both uncontracted at the end of the year, shake hands and do it in a mutual and respectful manner.

100% agree - which is really harsh on both but I think the club could benefit from having a couple of open spots in the mid season draft, especially when you look at some of the players that have come out of there recently (including Disco and Kentfield)

Could go some way to filling some of the gaps on the list

Been saying it for a while now.

It obviously depends on whether we want to take someone this year or just wait for the draft and take a few players, probably more than in recent years.

Would love to see AMW, XT and Jefferson/ Kentfield come into the side, we are getting very thin on the ground down back need Petty at F/B.

Jack Viney is 32 and is contracted to end 2028.

Think about that, whoever is responsible should walk.

He has been a fine servant sure, and I never like to bag a man, but if he was 100% would we really be throwing an aging on the slow side battler into our midfield?

Its a catch 22 for me.

You pick a hidden gem ala Jai Newcombe or you take the risk at the end of the year knowing that person could be well snapped up before our pick.

I have been in the nost of get them through the professional environment and start the development knowing they've had the extra head start on the rookies being picked up in the draft.

Agree, but you have to have identified a player you want and if there is no one outside the draft you can identify, then you just wait for trade and draft weeks.

If we have a player on the radar, I am sure a spot can be created mid season.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
