Welcome to Demonland: Jack Steele

Was always a big fan of the recruitment of Jack just based purely on numbers. Once you took sentiment out your decision, Steele's output was = to Oliver's (post injury/crash out) when you averaged out TOG.

Jack being a great person and very cheap just made sense.

Saints are famous for making terrible decisions such as sacking coaches

Who covers Steele for them? They don’t have much.

Shaft your captain for a young ruck and utility?

pathetic.

But he is a beauty and i’m so glad he’s with us. No way we are 2-1 without him

Last week at the gym, I heard 2 seasoned Saints supporters complaining that the Doggies player they got - to replace Steele - is no good.

A great insight into his leadership on the Comeback clip online. At half-time he predicted that our midfield was getting on top. Great character and 16 tackles. Pressure an integral part of our new game plan....he's a gem.

Saying goodbye to Clarry was hard, but when we got Steele for essentially the same deal I was absolutely rapped. The saints are 100% going to regret this decision, they've not only lost a fantastic footballer but a brilliant leader.

The man of Steele.

The only question that doesn't need an answer is why didn't we have him sooner!

I wasn’t in the country when Jack was at his best, is he near that now or still off a bit?

He seems to be bloody awesome on and off the field and such a blessing for us to have so I’m curious on how he used to be.

The Saints list management team should hand in their notice- what absolute fools.

I must say, I got it very wrong. Thought he would come in as an extra body similar to what Tom Mitchell was for Collingwood, but the way Steele has fitted in, the bloke doesn’t waste a disposal and I reckon him and Sparrow are our 2 best players outside of Pickett and Gawn to date. 2 tackling beasts and the perfect remedy for the absolute lack of defensive accountability we had last year in the middle.

Didn’t think he would be one of the main threats we have going forward of the ball.

The body's spot on. The mind seems willing. He loves a run with role but has a huge tank that allows him to damage the other way.

That last part plus the drive, second efforts and composure under pressure, especially his ability / agility to weave his way through congestion to find and get the ball towards outlets, has gone to a somewhat higher level vs the Saints so far for mine.

Having said that i do recall a few games with the Saints where he was also outstanding.

Emphasis on 'till now' as we obviously only have a few games to go on. Fingers & toes crossed he can bring this consistently as he'll be a huge bonus. Especially with Vines on the sidelines.

Steele found a teammate with 24 of his 26 possessions

The DE percentage is sometimes subjective but 92% is fantastic for a midfielder who will often be under pressure when disposing of the ball

He doesn't mind body contact when dishing off and that's an admiral trait

On top of that, 8 tackles, 7 score involvements and 11 clearances. Wow!!

Prior to the last couple of seasons at St Kilda he was one of the competitions top tier mids. Equal third in the 2020 Brownlow (tied with Petracca), twice an All Australian, a couple of club B and F's and club captaincy. King has reminded him how to enjoy the game. Form is temporary, class is permanent. He's classy on and off the field.

That was a tongue in cheek comment about Billings.

You can see from my 15/11 comments (above) that i likened him to Bernie Vince.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
