Farewell Clayton Oliver

His two way running was never an issue under Goodwins game plan when we had ANB and Gus covering ground so our best midfielder could run where he wanted.

In the 3rd quarter of our premiership Clarrie shut down Bont then kicked the sealer running off him.

That is the epitome of 2 way running at itโ€™s greatest.

Yeah sorry, that was in 2021. Like Clarrie and Tracc you're living off past glories. The footy world has moved on. Since Clarrie was '2 way running' Brisbane have won 2 flags How are we travelling?

Sure was, but that was 4 years ago, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since then

Not even close.

Maybe go barrack for the Giants.

He's not the Messiah.... but he was a naughty boy.

Take your point re hands but his 2 way running was pretty much non existent which is critical for today's mids. Add that to his disruptive influence and it was inevitable a new coach would want to assert his team first approach

I don't know King from a bar of soap. But could he also want to esrablish honest relationships with his players and/or hope his warning/ultimatum would prime Oliver into a perfect preseason and get his attitude back to his 2021 standard?

Your logic defies all logic Doc.

So a player who DESERTS the club in pursuit of FAME and FORTUNE deserves a medal, but the other WHO WANTED TO STAY, BUT WAS KICKED OUT doesnt deserve a medal! Unbelievable!

Umm, didnt King tell Oliver that he wasnt going to be guaranteed seniors games? Correct me if Im wrong but Oliver thought "**** that" and left.

It's probably in this thread the video of Oliver mocking others about his attitude and pottymouth and dragging new teammates into his mess. The guy should be knuckling down as someone who needs to turn his form around and be an inconspicuous humble newbie (even though his best is incredible) grateful for another chance. Anyway he's not our problem. Too bad if ends up like a Fevola at Brisbane being like a poisoned chalice.

No King told him he wasnt going to be a midfielder which was just like saying, 'You are not wanted anymore'. Put whatever any spin you like on this story.

Okay. So unlike other players asked to play an unglamorous role , i.e. put the team over his self-interest , Oliver was selfish?

Oliver was not a plodder. He had explosive speed out of packs. Goodwin had role players and Oliverโ€™s role was not to get back behind the football.

You can pull your hair out all you want, I hope you donโ€™t go bald with Kingโ€™s knew game plan because there will still be players that wont run both ways by instruction.

Iโ€™ll guess Harvey Langford but I have been wrong once before.

You'll be wrong again.

No well I have Flower, Oliver and Barrassi as 1,2,3 and you say not even close???? By what metric??

Brisbane has won two flags because the AFL wanted them to win, along with Collingwood and anyone bar us. Winning the ten games in a row after that frightened the maggot AFL and they put their Media and maggot umpire Fraternity base to work to wreck our future. Old boys club of haters like Taylor Robinson and Richmond's mouthpiece.

If you really need the difference spelled out to you you're not half as bright as I've allowed.

One was a stand up guy.. 6 flags... captained the club... WAS the club. But the club was the issue.

We're paying a bloke to [censored] off

You can't see that ? You don't want to see that ?

The guy helped as part of a team but he was also very much part of the problem. And we had problems.

Seems like we were again a very compromised club.

But hey... you go with whatever floats your boat picket.. Clarry.. rah rah rah

Tbh... he's his own worst enemy.

He is someone else's problem now. I really couldn't care less.

Probably no flag in 21 without him but things unfortunately changed quickly.

Too many distractions.

The club has done the right thing and it's nice to see most wish him the best.

He is someone else,s problem now. Lets just hope they do not get him back to 6 time winning club B&F and helping win a Grand Final. They are traits that all players play for and it will be interesting to see what happens. He gave me many happy hours and I will still remember him as a club great.

I think it says as much about the club as it does about Clarry, perhaps we got his contract wrong and didnt provide the correct support to continue to get the best out of him. I wasnt in the room at any stage so have no idea really, but I am disappointed and dont believe the club has communicated well, which is a continuing issue.

I love and support the club and will continue. I hope this years performance improves quickly and we enjoy success which overides our disappointments.

Iโ€™m looking forward the new season seeing kingy and our next generation take the club forward.

What is clear by this thread is that heโ€™s left a bitter taste for many supporters who wonโ€™t see any relief for a long time. Football is a passionate game.

Yeah when you lose the best player you have seen in your lifetime and won us a premiership it cuts deeply.

It sure does! A marvellous player who was, and in my humble opinion ,still will be a great. Sad about the circumstances of his dismissal. Thank you new broom! You are under my microscope until you can justify your actions.

There were plenty of other players who helped us win the flag mate. It was a team effort.

And I disagree he's our best player in a lifetime but that's for another day.

Oliver looks in ripping nick and may go well, maybe the penny has dropped and his determined to show it. However:

16 other clubs weren't prepared to bet on that happening with more than a 3rd rounder and half his salary.

Hyperbole much?

You also left out the bit where he could walk on water.

He couldnโ€™t walk on water even baby Jesus, who Ablett jnr was called by his mates at Gold Coast couldnโ€™t but Iโ€™m pretty sure is was Moses in the bible who parted the sea.

Itโ€™s not hyperbole to say somebody is the best player you have ever seen play for your club.

Gawn and Robbie Flower are up there and better clubmen but Clarrie is the best I have seen

The same 16 other cubs that could have drafted Max Gawn but over looked him in the draft?

Half the clubs are hopeless at recruiting and besides Richmond and Geelong no team seems to be great at taking mature age players.

We were when we took Lever, May and Landon but we seem to have dropped off a cliff since then

Not talking about the draft though are we. We're talking about an experienced player with B&F's, AA's, Coaches Awards, a premiership, you name it ... that no-one wanted to touch with a bargepole, even with us paying half his salary. You'd wonder if even GWS would have taken him had they not desperately needed cover for an injured Josh Kelly.

While the wider public and blinkered supporters might be blissfully unaware as to what's really gone on behind the scenes with Oliver, the other clubs know only too well.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
