Nah.... The '21 flag was sublime, especially the part after Bontempelli's victory goal. There is no entitlement to follow-up premierships, just ask StKilda. We are living in times where AFL head office are trying to force-feed a flag into franchise rugby states. At least there is the fig-leaf of compensation, not like the old days when Barassi, Alves, Wells, Keenan etc could just walk out the door.

I think I might not have been entirely clear, but I agree :-)

The point I was trying to make, was that after all the years we waited, as amazing as the win was (the whole year, and finals included - and it will live in my mind forever), it's hilarious that it was played and won away from our home - plus all those other things I mentioned. I am not sure of any other team in history who have lost their 2 pillars not too long after a GF win. Think Bont and Libba being traded by 2020. Anyway, I thought it was funny (dark sense of humour).

Look. Personally, I never thought we would get him, but it has been a fun ride.

For those potting people that have posted rumors of what they have heard, all I'll say is that the interview with the manager yesterday does give weight to what some have posted. We have most likely gone very hard for Humphrey and it is Gold Coast that have not been willing to budge. Otherwise, the manager would have come out last week after Gold Coast to reiterate what they had said, but instead he sounded exasperated in the interview yesterday that he couldn't get his client home.

Don’t get me wrong I’m being blindly optimistic but I don’t understand why everyone thinks we have no chance next year. (outside of a capital standpoint)

It's The Veil of Negativity

We are amongst the most negative supporters in the league despite having experienced recent success

Because we are still incompetent from top down.

Even the handling of pushing Clarry out the door for nothing and paying half his wage reeks of incompetence. And I'm sure that it would have needed approval from the President and CEO.

Ok you say we’re incompetent from the top down. That doesn’t answer nor even address my question. Again, my question is: why, if he’s useless at his job, hasn’t Tim Lamb been sacked?

Hm. Maybe.

I think there's also a VERY compelling case to be made that a team that finished in the bottom five for two years in a row and has now lost two of the midfielders essential to their most recent period of success, one still a strong contributor, will struggle for at least the next little while.

Maybe there's a really compelling alternative case. I haven't heard one that doesn't include:
a) Our under 20s are simply better than everyone else's (which I would say is wishful at absolute best)

b) Oliver and Petracca were always going to take multiple seasons to get back to their best (no longer relevant)

I'm enormously excited to see where a completely new coach who obviously wants to go in a completely new direction can get us to. I just don't think it's finals next year.

It would be great - it's not impossible - it just strikes me as highly unlikely.

i think we are cooked for at least 2 seasons. like, will play some utterly trash football in that time and probably tally up 12-18 wins total.

Seriously, does anyone want Trac or Cee Oliver to stay after all this?

Serously...

Im in the NO camp. Move forward now

It's time to move forward. We're probably 12-24 months too late but it's time

Give me a morsel of hope DF

While it seems all but certain tha Humphrey wont be joining us this trade period I have had a heap of fun on here and will keep a close eye on Humphrey's 2026 campaign. He seems like a good character to have in a footy club and hopefully we secure a good 2026 pick that can go towards chasing him next year.

Nope not a chance.

I will be there round 1 supporting the boys who want to be wearing our jumper.

My expectations are low with a younger group having to step up but I will be there to support them of course.

Absolutely not. Still feel bad for Clarry but the reality is he was a main contributor to our current state. We need to turn over a new page and for that, get rid of all the bad eggs.

Agreed (although I think the win total might be more like 8 to 14 over the next 2 seasons).

The only silver lining to the complete balls up of our list management is that we now have noone to pay next season...so perhaps we can clear off a bunch of the Oliver and Brayshaw money so it doesn't linger to the end of the decade...

which all comes back to: Should we have got rid of them last year? I can understand why they didmt with Trac as his value would have been even less after being told he almost died and didnt know if he would come back. Clayton definitely should of moved on last year.

100% we should have gone ruthless and traded them last year for a speedy player like Caleb Serong but we kept on trying to make the relics of a 2021 team play like it's 2021.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
