NON-MFC: Finals Week 03

2021 wasn’t a patch on 2018 for the majority of MFC supporters that got to experience the Geelong and Hawthorn MCG finals in 2018.

Back to back 90,000 MCG finals wins > watching finals in lock down.

Wasn't there at either, but sat through loosing GFs in 88 and 2000.  Just give me that premiership at the G and I'd be complete in a footy sense.

I thought Tom Atkinson was sensational and if not for Danger would have been BOG.

In the past 14 years

The Cats have made prelims 8 times

For 1 flag

Successful? Yes

Disappointed fans? Also yes

What’s stopping you?

Besides, any team would be this great with Geelong’s manipulated, magical, mysterious salary cap goings-on.

Sour Grapes Ghosty,?? take a Bex and have a little lay down

Dangerfield - WOW.

Petracca, model your game on Danger and how he attacks the ball , Trac is capable if he wants to…..

So that’s what Tracc’s problem has been all along.

I’m focusing on the positives

Great to see the hawks lose and their smug fans streaming out of the G in the last quarter.

My thoughts exactly.

...youngest son was going for the Hawks tonight, so I had to feign support for them to win. Part of me was dying on the inside.

I never realized Holmes is 190 cms.

Looks much shorter on the ground.

Such a pity Cats got that traded pick ahead of us.

Do you know what the expression ‘Sour grapes’ means? I don’t see how it applies here.

Nah, I think your maths are a bit out their old Dub. Flags in 2009, 2011 & 2022 - that's three flags in 14 years and if you go back one further to 2007 it's four in 15 years.

I'd definitely take that.

...the 20 odd years prior to 2007 might have been pretty heart breaking though, but we know all about that.

In the past 14 yrs the Dees have played in 2 prelims , 2 straight sets exits & 1 flag

Coaches x 4 onto our 5th

More disappointing?

A silver lining is King will have great insights of winning, culture etc

He'll get a reality check when he comes to us. He'll go from dangerfield, Cameron & blicavs to sparrow, Sharpe & van rooyen.

You know it’s a diabolical September when you’re quietly happy Geelong won a prelim final.

Literally I need therapy after this season

If I’m Sam Mitchell I go after Trac more than I do Merrett. They really lack that brute mid/fwd.

Happy for King and thats it, everyone else can get stuffed.

Geez just coz Stewart is going to miss next weeks GF all of a sudden every commentator is now talking about g about having the rules changed….

They should have kept the grand final bye after the 2021 grand final, it worked fine then (for different reasons, COVID related)

The bye only helps teams from outside the top 4 …

I'm so jealous this isn't us playing tonight. I'd kill to watch us win finals at the g. 2018 feels like a life time ago now.

2018 was the best time I've had at the footy. We were the most attacking team in the league and winning those finals with 90,000+ at the G was such a great experience.

I'll always be thankful for 2021, but it wasn't the same.

The lead up to the finals series in 2018 was unreal as well. We beat West Coast at their home ground in Round 22 after an entire week of worrying that we were on track to wasting another season.

And our performance against GWS the following week was honestly my favourite home and away game I've ever attended. That entire game almost like a public celebration rather than an actual football game. We'd already confirmed a finals spot the week before and we played as if we basically had nothing to lose. Fast, aggressive, free flowing, attacking footy. I don't think I've ever felt as relaxed at a game as I was that day.

That shocking preliminary final aside, the last month of 2018 was fever dream stuff. We couldn't have picked two better teams than Geelong and Hawthorn to knock off in the finals given the years of torture they used to inflict on us.

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
