I remember reading something about him growing up with an alcoholic step father father who use to do some crazy [censored] to his mum which he was exposed to as a child.

His real father walked out on the family when he was only a toddler.

I dont think he had the greatest of up bringing to be fair.

Im reminded of David Schwartz. When he was about 8 he witnessed his father's murder. He ended up an eleven out of ten problem gambler. Thankfully he ended up working his way out of that (which probably was connected to his childhood trauma.) Us older fans remember how amazing he was late 94. He was mercurial in our two winning finals and looked to just about overtake Carey as the best in the league. Unfortunately after that he needed knee reconstructions which dulled his game. His sister was a netballer whose knees were also a problem so I guess they had some unlucky genes. If Schwartz had rivalled Carey over the rest of the 90s we quite feasibly could have won a flag, such as in 1998, when we were so close.

I had the immense pleasure of meeting our new coach this morning at Gosch’s during the W training session. Chunk, Chappy, Selwyn and Richo were also there. Richo said I should come over to meet Kingy, which I did.

Kingy said they were at AAMI and decided to wander over to support the girls. He said today is the first of three days of strategy meetings. He said things are going well (re the meetings) and everyone’s on the same page with the same goals. He’s a very nice person.

And did he do this when he met you? 😁 (Seriously, i love how devoted some fans are, including you.)

One thing that i loved was him saying "We don't need to be trying to save the game, take it forward and attack, but do it on our terms with the outnumber." He's got a few habits to undo but it's encouraging.

Absolutely!

In other words, take the game on when its our turn and we'll cop the mistake along the way.

Music to my ears.

Go Kingy!

Big shoes to fill but we back you in to implement a new exciting game plan

  • 3 months later...

I loved it when they spoke to him on SEN morning after he was appointed and Tim Watson told him to always answer within three rings when Garry calls.

  • 3 weeks later...

Found it very interesting in the footage from the lightning game that they showed him saying something like "I'm never going to ask you blokes to give me more effort. That's insulting to you."

I like this a lot - but it's certainly a very different approach to screaming at Greene, Coniglio and Whatshisname that they're soft, lazy and undisciplined.

I'm absolutely loving the approach of Kingy.

The themes of:

  • Taking anxiety out of the program

  • Expressing yourselves as players

  • Getting to work but have fun doing it

  • Playing with natural flair

  • A clean slate for all.

He has coined all of the above and the way we go about our work as 'Demons football'.

Its simple but its exactly what our group need right now and you can see why he was the unanimous choice to coach the MFC from his presentation to the committee. I believe we are lucky that West Coast didn't take him.

Leon Cameron was the GWS coach tearing strips off the players. That clip was enough to know he was a terrible coach and would waste an extremely talented list with no success. Coniglio was already having form and confidence issues at the time, so Cameron ripping him apart publicly was basically the end of his senior coaching career. It showed man with no empathy, no emotional control, no awareness and no vision. Pathetic.

On Kingy, he seems very positive so far. Be interesting to see how he handles the group when the pressure comes and the whips are cracking. Seems a good choice on limited exposure thus far though. Pretty happy with how he seems to have got the group enjoying footy and playing with freedom again!

Interesting little revelation on On The Couch tonight from Buckley that when he was interviewing for the Melbourne coach position, the candidates were told that there would be personnel changes. He noted that everything that Melbourne said would happen has happened.

May, Oliver, Petracca were on their way before King arrived, even if they didn't know it at that stage.

but but kane kornes said you cant trust us and we are liars

I also enjoyed Jordan Lewis’s comment when he said (paraphrasing) that if Trac & Oliver had a good look at themselves , they didn’t do everything possible to be the best teammates. I got the impression that everyone thought it was good to move them on

Yes, I think I remember that. More recently it was Kingsley in an excerpt from an Amazon documentary.

I'm the same as you - I don't see how that helps. And if it does, surely you can only use it once. If you're doing it again - especially if you're doing it to the same players - surely the joke's on you. You're the one picking the players you're now calling undisciplined, uncompetitive and untrustworthy. But apart from anything else it's just humiliating people in front of their mates. There's an idea that this works for some people - it might. But it would be very very few people.

True about Steven King. I like the idea that he doesn't insult them by asking for effort. But what happens when the effort is demonstrably down. Does he bite his tongue and assume the professionals will have enough self-awareness to say - "I'm not giving it everything. I need to improve after half time."?

Lewis is still mates with some at the club and that was a very insightful and interesting comment.

It's an old school approach that's never been particularly good.

I spent some time coaching back in the day and when I think back, it's actually embarrassing some of the things I would say to players and I think I was mild compared to some. It was kind of expected, the committee & supporters would think you were too soft if you didn't give the players a bake. Playing to the crowd, theatre or whatever you want to call it.

As I say, really dumb and embarrassing to look back on. As an AFL coach, I can't see any value at all.

King is right on the money...

I currently play under an ex AFL player who was coached by Kevind Sheedy during their peak in the early 2000's.

He is in his 3rd year now but at the start he was absolutely fire and brimstone and would tear strip's off player at quarter time and end of the game.. definitely old school approach. We have lost players because of it.

It doesnt bother because I was coming through senior footy ranks where it was like that every week so im use to it and could take it.

But I also understand that yes, its not really the right way to go about it. I definitely feel it still has a place in the game its just how yoo deliver that.

Generation of today just cant cop it.

I must admit when I saw the Kingsley spray I personally loved it... challenge the leaders more then anything and they responded with a win.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
