After the premiership year we finished top 4 in both 2022 and 2023 and never left the 8 the entire time.
We were the only team to do that and as a premiership team that everyone was trying to find ways to stop that is an incredible effort.

Obviously the finals in both seasons were disasters and there were a number of reasons for why each of those campaigns turned out the way they did.
Some of which was 100% coaching (and selection), but there was a LOT that had absolutely nothing to do with that.

It delusional at best and wilfully ignorant at worst to pretend those two H&A seasons never happened and say that Goodwins record (and by extension the teams record) has been abysmal since 25/09/2021.

Loosing the same way since the 22 finals and the bombing continues going forward, how many games have we lost after leading?

Our kicking skills have deteriorated in particular from our senior players, how many out of bounce by Langdon, Goodwin tried for 3 seasons to tweak & change the game plan but failed. We can only hope the new coach and assistants can change this.

No, but how much would it cost to lure most stars from a team they were happy with? We already have Kosi, Trac and Oliver on big money. How much wriggle room do we have?

We tagged Nick Daicos into insignificance and, after quarter time, pretty much shut down his brother too. How many players can you tag?

Derm gave Daicos the 3 votes - setting it up.for Brownlow

We went 6-8 (including the straights sets here) after that 10-0 start and we really weren't that injured, we had all our A-listers out there and yes we did have some banged up players but refused to make any changes to the side and kept playing them- which was all topped off when we went in "no changes" into that semi final against Brisbane.

That wasn't bad luck and injuries, that was poor management and poor coaching.

We need to own that, rather than blaming external factors and "bad luck" - which is what has lead us to 2 consecutive straight sets losses and now 2 consecutive bottom 5 finishes.

Really good summary.

By any metric our last 4 seasons have been a failure! It's all about RESULTS!

If you're drawing the line at the end of the 2023 season I'd agree with you.

Any earlier - as I have outlined - and you are plain wrong

Well that's because you have to pay overs (generally) to woo other players over. And we're not a sexy destination without Caulfield built. It's partly why I think our list management strategy has been to draft top end talent, rather than hope to land it paying overs like St Kilda allegedly do.

Positives?

Maxy will win his 3 BnF

and his first BnF for 6 years which seems crazy

And we Don't have to watch us lose a close game for 6 months

Of the 2 seasons immediately post flag I can see where an argument can be had for... but but... we did 'this'.. we got 'there'. It's a seductive stance i grant you. But if we kinda apply the "Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me" filter then if the 1st season gets a ... "well we did OK really " stamp the second most certainly can not.

A battle cry ne mantra has been "Learnings "

Did we not realise how we almost lost that GF ? Seems not as it was our ultimate undoing in 22. Did we then not learn from 22 in 23 ? Again seems not as it was all but spin repeat. And to he honest I'm fiik what we really learnt in 24 and this year save we might be morphing towards doing some things right but we still do a hell of a lot wrong.

So, generously, I'll grant you 22 as not being a failure. ( certainly not a success ) but 23/24/25 .. well a rose by any other name ....etc etc.

All water under the bridge now.

Let's all look forward to new beginnings and some success and growth in 26

You’re hoping like hell they won’t. Your husband would be insufferable, amirite?! 😅

You are correct Ghosty but TBH he doesn’t hold out much hope for them either. I don’t know whether he was trying to get in my good books 🙄but he was nothing short of complementary of how we almost won and agrees our young talent are better than theirs. So I won’t be cooking him Beef Wellington this weekend !

Gawn said last night that he felt we were "in" 20 out of our 23 games this year (the other three being Round 2 v North, Round 2 v GC and Round 23 v Hawthorn).

I was thinking about that, and sort of think he's right.

By my count, at three quarter time this year we were in front 10 times - we managed to lose four of those (3 in the last 5 weeks).

Of the 13 games where we trailed at three quarter time, 10 of those the margin was 18 points or less (the three others were both GC games and Hawthorn last week).

An 18 point deficit isn't necessarily something you look at and think "we're on here", but IMO it's a gettable margin. But we only won 1 of those 10 games (Brisbane).

So there is probably something to be said for Gawn's comment.

(PS: this isn't a "we're close to being good again" argument. We've had this problem for 2.5 seasons now).

We were not close in 22. We were the walking wounded going 6-6 last 12 games and then losing both finals. We were out on our feet

2023 was bad luck when all our forwards went down. I’m far from sure, if we had won through, that we would win a prelim, never mind a granny. We were out of luck unfortunately

Yep, there's been some amazing transfers like Dangerfield, Neale, Lynch and J Cameron. But often they don't land. Of course we don't even know who the new coach is yet. But it will be interesting what strategy they use. Is this meant to be a weak draft?

I don't get the bombing.

Particularly because our talks are Petty and Roo.

The Pockets work with the others but it's a lower percentage and maybe reflected in our.missed shots

We should have played Kentfield or play May as a F.F , we had nothing to lose. Paying overs for Picket is a joke , he could suffer from a mental or physical health injury early and we still have to pay. Yes I know anyone could get injured. For his huge way I would expect him to kick 3 goals per week. His role is a midfielder (not in the elite class ) and a small forward who does not kick a load of goals.

Gawn is an elite tap ruckman who the opposition constantly feeds off . He seldom kicks goals . We have lots of players who have gone backwards over the past years.

Who goes Fritsch (for currency), the Bombers will take him , Oliver ,Sparrow ,Jefferson (given opportunities ) , Lever , May , Fullarton and perhaps Laurie.

We were very good but cruised for most of 22/23. We never buried the opposition with big wins when we had the opportunity as well as letting weak sides like North physically monster us whilst we did just enough for a comfortable win. When finals came our lackadaisical approach was exposed by finals pressure.

Probably already mentioned but Pendles taking the initiative to do the kick outs and McReery coming back on basically won them the game.

As Chaplin talked about it's just little moments and decisions like that which can make all the difference.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The Demons return to Casey Fields (aka the Field of Dreams) this Saturday to host the Saints in Round 2. If you’re feeling lucky, head down the Monash for some family-friendly footy—you might even walk away a winner. The first 5,000 adults through the gate will receive an entry into the $10,000 helicopter ball drop. With Casey’s infamous wind, what could possibly go wrong? Closest ball to the pin wins. So spread the word, get down there—and good luck!

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwin’s summer of love. Many issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.
