Who’s Playing Their Last Game In The Red & Blue tonight?

The footage with Gawn and May is quite interesting.

For one, it does look like May is at best not listening to Gawn, or at worst rolling his eyes right when Gawn says "we need to learn how to win".

But of course then remember that the club posted the video. So we had all the opportunity to see May's reaction before posting. And remember, too, that whilst seeing Gawn speak in the rooms is nice for us fans, the message was the exact same message he gave in his already-posted post-match interview (right down to the "there were three ways this game was going to go" stuff).

We could have just capped the video at Chaplin's address. We chose to add in Gawn's speech.

Did the club's comms team not see May's reaction? Or see it, but felt it was harmless? Or see it, and didn't care about it being shown to the public?

Our media team absolutely didn't see it.

Are you part of the media team?

Not trying to be mean, but this was all silly

Leave it with the outgoing coach to say a few thank yous and have a happy summer, boys

They're tired - it's been a tough year

Fatigue is a real thing

On Xmas eve, when all the party poppers are ready and there are flights to catch?

The speech was unnecessary

You’re going to shift the blame to our captain for making an “unnecessary” one-minute address to his players at the end of the final match of the year?

Any other weird deflections or excuses for a [censored]-poor attitude you wanna make, or are you done?

I think you're too hysterical

It was the last game - save it all for a fresh start

And, I have a different opinion to you - heaven forbid!

Yeah but unfortunately it’s Steven May.

A dude who basically puts Occam’s Razor right in your palm.

No, my opinion is based on our media teams noted attention to detail:

Two things.

  1. Its okay for Max to give a speech. Team is about to break up and its normal even at suburban or country level when your captain gets up and speaks at the last game of the season. No issues.

  2. May is a [censored]. When your captain speaks just shut up and listen and stop trying to distract others who are also trying to show the respect it needs. Roll your eyes for all I care but to be talking away when the captain is addressing the playing group is down right rude and disrespectful.

I’ll add to this that any supporters who think there’s nothing in this are being wilfully-ignorant to one of the club’s biggest areas of concern (up there with facilities/forward line). This is of course just my opinion, but I think May has been one of our biggest contributors to culture-death these past few seasons. Off-field stuff aside, he’s always had a vibe of “I was a captain once too, y’know”, and it’s pretty plain to see here.

May is well aware why the club is chasing him out though.

Are they though? Seems like we will get massive unders for a 33/34 year old who not that long ago was one of the few on our list that could single handedly win or turn games off his own bat.

I’d be surprised if we ever start a game with Gawn, Oliver, Petracca and Viney at the bounce again.

You won't ever see that again!

Either someone connected the club, Steven's agent or Steven himself through a third party (TM) have started these rumours about Steven to the Dogs.

Why are they chasing him out @Deez21

DM if you don't want to mention aloud.

According to AI on google just now, Kade Melksham has signed on for another year.

Nice approach by the dees here - combining Jake's experience with Chandler's youth and zip. And it frees up a spot on the list.

So uh, how many more days until the AI bubble bursts?

When you stop seeing ads on social media from AI agency bros. That's when you know the money has dried up.

A different discussion but our social media team is awful

Poor attention to detail and often cringe worthy content

As a young(er) Demonlander, I’d love them to take a page out of Hawthorn or GWS book

The content doesn’t have to be as tongue and cheek as those clubs socials, but content that’s a) accurate and b) allows our players personalities to shine through would go a long way to restore fan engagement with the club

Just get the spelling right for starters

It’s an issue in society - even the August Age, sorry, DomainFax, frequently misspells copy and headings

Shocking

Agree. Let’s hope the September Age is better. 😄

Btw, when I’ve commented on The Age’s poor writing or disconnection between headline and article, they don’t publish the post. Ignoring problems isn’t a way to improvement.

That was an auto correct and I couldn’t be bothered fixing it.

Yes, it is august.

Funny response though…chapeau!

I’ve just about had enough of May’s poor attitude. Ever since he’s arrived, it’s seemed to be one rule for him and another for his teammates.

If we are trying to re-establish our culture of uncompromising and no excuses, I don’t want him anywhere near the joint. He obviously thinks he’s bigger/better than the team.

Good player, but selfish bordering on narcissism.

I would say that Culture is built from treatment of outliers. I would suggest dealing with May provides much greater culture than firing him. We have exhibited many failures in action which have destroyed so many positive approaches. The club must be able to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the diversity of individuals and exploit and nurture them for the benefit of the collective.

Different rules are often needed but they must be built to channel outputs and outcomes to a clear consistent practice.

Much of Mays problem appears to be his uncompromising passion , this needs to be channelled into a team based requirement.

Probably the best elite athletes are selfish and maybe even narcissistic, it is managing and using those and all other attributes that really shows strength and is the culture that needs to be celebrated

Given this was Anzac Eve, maybe it was an intentional spelling mistake

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
