Riley a Chance for Next Year?

I just listened to the press conference and Paul got asked a fair few times if Riley would be given a shot for the full time position of head coach next year?

He said on a number of times that whoever goes through this "process" and comes out the other end the best he will be selected as coach, and Riley being the caretaker, has the upper advantage is you would like as he has 10 AFL games to show what he is made of?

What do you guys think? Whats this guy like? I dont know much about him?

But i still think our team is not as bad as our ladder position states, so what if our boys go on a run of wins, does this really enhance Rileys chances?

Bit of a loaded question to ask whether a run of wins will hep or hinder Riley's application, should he make one. Obviously it's not going to hurt, but I don't think losses should matter either.

I hope Riley and whoever else is qualified and interested are looked at. Him being the incumbent should be neither here nor there.

Fwiw I don't have an opinion on Riley - I don't really even know who he is.

I think it was Mark Doran staying earlier on SEN that 55% of caretaker coaches end up with the job at the end of the season they take over. (such as Roos, Rhode, Craig etc)

If he goes through the review process, and is the best candidate, then good luck to him!

i agree with that, someone new with fresh ideas and tough, disciplined mentality. Michael Voss seems a good option.

Someone with assistant coaching experience at Fremantle and Melbourne (i.e Riley) hardly fills me with confidence going forward.

My preference would be for the club to wipe the slate clean and start over.

However, if Riley does a good job over the next 9 weeks, and especially with selection and match-day coaching, than you'd have to seriously consider him. The one thing he has over other candidates, is that he is already familiar with our list and would know exactly who and what he'd want to bring into the club.

He has been our backline coach for a few years, what is the weakest part of our team? IMO our backline, so no.

Just to add something else to this thread:

reading the comments from Gardner about "the best person to come out of the review and selection process will get the job" makes me think that unless Riley does something miraculous like win 75% of the remaining games he's not really a chance, surely we'll be interviewing better candidates than him?

imagine the backlash if we get to the end of this 'process,' find our coach, and he then declines it. it seems we are actively looking for a replacement coach (which is fine) rather than having them apply to us, but are we sure the person we think is perfect for the job after the 'process' will take it?

The opp to coach at AFL senior level is every aspiring coaches dream and every current coaches opportunity. The selection process will isolate a more than just one potential candidate. The only guarantees of acceptance apply to those candidates who 'apply' and meet the selection criteria. Its the candidate who we want for the job & chase is the one who may be no guarantee.
