Daniel Turner - Next MFC Captain?

How dare you

He needs to put in a run of high quality games before a leadership role. Hasn't done that yet. But an improver for sure, unlike some of them, who are treading water.

I hadn't even thought of him in leadership terms until I opened this thread. Chewing on it now...

He has shwon some good character qualities.

Actual on-field contribution is improving steadily. Two more years we'd have a reasonable idea of his ceiling and how well his maturity progresses to being the calm head and communicator in the urgent moments.

The swingman aspect of his game is a bonus touch.

So... if all went well then two years from now we would be looking at a non-DH version of James Sicily, which would be outstanding.

Personally I don't see it being likely he'll reach quite those heights, but I think we can be confident he'll be a good contributor to reaffirming standards and behaviours for years to come.

If he keeps progressing then Harvey Langford will be a candidate

Obviously in the captain/coach mould - RDB mk2

I could see disco playing a good vc role alongside Rivers. Almost the knockabout Luke Hodge style before he matured and became captain.

Pretty sure I said Disco was an option in the Next Captain thread a month or two ago.

Doesn’t drop his bundle. Can back up words with actions and can be swung to the forward line in a pinch.

Rivers is another good candidate. People get stuck into him re his kicking at times but he is playing under instruction to take the game on. Other players went into their shell in the 4th. Rivers didn’t.

I felt like Kosi was the wildcard choice, he’s not a great speaker but might grow into it.

Something a bit unhinged to the idea of a Disco Captain / Kosi Vice.

Very un-Melbourne… in the best way.

Turner is a beauty but still too inexperienced.

I'm glad we have Gawn to give us stability with the change in Head Coach and CEO etc.

If Lever can get his body right, he would be my choice although if Gawn has 2 more years in him, Lever might be almost done by then.

Rivers has good traits and our young group has leadership potential, which is important as we seem to have a gap in 23-28 age group

So buggered if I know!

I'm miffed that we have no discernible succession plan for Max.

We did. Angus Brayshaw.

The one who's already in the leadership group is Chandler. Mightn't resonate with many here, but it's what he does in/around the club that matters.

Losing ANB hasn't helped either, would have been a good workhorse captain.

Sure. But what did we do when he retired nearly two years ago?

It isn't just what they do around the club. Among other things they need to represent the club with media, sponsors, management, future players etc and this takes exposure and practice. I'm not seeing many new faces since Brayshaw retired.

As I said Lever, Viney etc need to make way for the younger candidates to officially be leaders.

I like it.

He goes straight to vice captain at very least. Leadership in spades

If our president - what are his initials again? -were to have a say, well...

He's only established himself as best 22 this year and we're talking captain without even knowing if he can keep up this form.

To me, it shows the lack of option anywhere at the club and lack of on field leadership we have

It's a fair point.

There's nobody at the club I'm more confident will keep up his form - at least.

Probably two years away with this sort of form before he'd be ready. Haven't seen him do a whole lot of media so not sure how he speaks though.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
