Why is this a sad thing?

Sad in the sense that we need a lot of things bettered.... and she'd be far more capable of understanding what needs to be done than those currently there.

And why do we do that ?

In hope some bastard ( possibly up there ) hears us and does something as quite plainly there's very few with the requisite intelligence down here.

Sharp has been dropped 3 times in his past four games. Sure, we know he's not an AFL standard player, but lets give him yet another opportunity because he kicked a few goals in the VFL.

Culley should have played last week, but better late than never. Hopefully he avoids the sub vest.

Lindsay should have been rested a month ago (probably against Port). Hopefully he actually does sit this week out, instead of playing at Casey.

Spargo should have about five mates playing with him at Casey - Sparrow and Salem for starters. I assume he'll get his standard 15 touches and come back in next week, probably for Sharp.

And Viney being selected this week when injured is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, and this club has made plenty of dumb decisions this year.

The decision to play Viney this week sums up everything that is wrong with the club at the moment.

What are we trying to achieve by doing this?

You could give any young player an opportunity so they get some AFL experience. But instead you're saying to the playing group that it's more important for an injured Viney at age 31 to play this game, then it is for the rest of you.

The selections this year, and since 2021 have been baffling and lacked integrity. It's clear that key people at the club are delusional about what we should be doing at the moment, and unwilling to make the decisions required for us to move forward.

Great to see Culley get a game.

Dropping Spargo absolutely the right call.

But we’re sticking fat with the same core players, as is this FD’s way.

Meanwhile Viney has a broken wrist. Perhaps we rest him and give someone else a go? Nah, of course not. (Sigh).

There's like three weeks left in the season and nothing left to play for. Why are we risking an injured player? Put him in for surgery ffs.

Who is stopping them? Quite frankly I wouldnt want my grandchildren playing either at elite level. Too much control of your body, long term injuries, public scrutiny and all tbe rest. I lived next door to elite sportwoman and they were the most up themselves unfriendly girls you would ever meet. Dont know if it was because of the stress of it all or the fact they tbought they were special

Your sample size is statistically insignificant, I can present a similarly statistically insignificant sample -

I know an Olympic gold medal winner - kids friends at school, we socialise a bit, have them over etc - super super lovely person.

Because most people don't know what they are talking about (other than looking at VFL stat sheets) and just want change for the sake of change.
And if they don't get the change they ask for, then obviously they know better than our football department and ~gOoDwIn Is pLaYiNg fAvOuRiTeS~

Remember last season, when selection threads were full of outrage about not giving Fullarton a go, simply because his VFL stats were good and his surname wasn't Petty?
How'd that work out?

Same thing now.

Goodwin, ad nauseam, has continually preached that we won't be wasting a game, a quarter, a training session etc.

So of course we'll be taking risks by playing injured players in a career defining game against the 1 win-18 loss West Coast side.

what if Goodwin is trying to lose this so we sack him and he gets his 1M. Takes a year off, feet up, no stress, happy days!!

Maybe they want to ensure one last win for the season before sending him off?

It is a bit baffling - but also shows lack of faith in some of the youngsters and no future for Billings.

I may be the stupidest person in Australia intending to go this game, but for anyone else who has problems finding the barcode to unlock tickets it's nowhere (that I can find) in the mobile app. The website says the barcode can be found under the page for that event, but there is no page because it's a Marvel home game. Eventually I got it by logging into the web version of the MyDemons page and absolutely hate myself for going to this much effort for what may be the sloppiest slopfest in the history of slop.

Agree, the AFLW needs work and you’re more than fair to say so. And you’ve said it in a clear and reasonable way.

I’m just sick to death of hearing a certain delegation of man babies 💩 all over the AFLW.

If they don’t want to watch it, fine, but I’m sick of hearing threatened sooks comllaining about it. If little boys can dream of being Max Gawn, little girls should be able to dream about being Kate Hore

We need to be patient with AFLW - but we live in an era lacking patience. We live in an age of instant gratification, instant messaging and Instagram, but there's no short cut to AFLW reaching the elite skills the men have had 166 years to get to where we are today.

As a society, we want professional women's sport to inspire little girls, young women and deliver society leaders like Daisy Pearce. I want my granddaughters to believe they can do anything, achieve anything and that, as a society, we are giving them the same opportunities as their brothers and male cousins.

There's a wonderful Chinese proverb "If you're planning for one year, grow rice. If your planning for 20 years, grow trees. If your planning for centuries, grow leaders."

That's what the AFLW is about.

Culley earnt his go. Lindsay needs a rest. Sharp shooter replaces Spargs… fair! What other changes were called for?

Petty lucky to survive, but with May and Lever out, he may be needed.

JVR could have been replaced by Jefferson or Johnson, but he is required to give Max a rest.

If we were only taking the fourth quarter into consideration we could drop five or six…

I support the old adage that when a team has had their colours lowered to that extreme, the first blokes that should be given an opportunity to respond are those that failed dismally last week. If they fail again then we drop five or six!

I just dont understand why the persistence with Petty as forward. aside from the odd spurt in the odd game over a few years, he has been completely ineffectve. fancy in hindsight turning down 2 1st round picks for this bloke. Good defender. Keep him there. Jeffo must be sratching his head. Goodwin's constant stubborness on this will be his downfall.

I agree on Petty not being a forward, but based on the Carlton game if Jefferson tried to scratch his head he'd poke himself in the eye.

Oh goodness - the Viney selection.

What is going on?

I’d be fairly confident it’s been assessed and medical staff will have said he won’t do any further damage and he just needs to play through the pain

Post of the week,

People forget that when football was invented, even the men took years to become efficient in their skills. As the game evolved, so did the players. Women, until recently in the grand scheme of things, only started playing this as a semi-professional game. Wait until the new generation of girls comes through the ranks; skills will improve enormously. Girls' football in the junior ranks at some clubs is outnumbering the boys, so it will get better as more money is invested in girls' football by clubs with coaching and resources. People just have to be more patient.

If Petty is going to play forward he has to be a lead up player not a pack mark player when he has done that he has had better influence than what he is doing now.

Oh but PSDee, dontchya know? The medical experts on Demonland are way more knowledgeable on this than our club medics.

Please don’t spoil the Club pile-on with your sensible surmising.

Come on Ghosty

There are so many other clubs in the league who are managing their veteran / injured players even while they’re in the hunt for finals

Geelong won the flag in 2022 being conservative with their veterans

Collingwood is odds on to do the same having rested Pendlebury, Sidebottom etc in recent weeks

You don’t have to agree with people’s want for a change in coach, but how anyone can defend an injured player being selected for a dead rubber match - while there are many players at Casey and even in the AFL who could cover his role - is beyond me

Not to mention Petracca playing with the flu against Carlton

Both are/were stubborn and unnecessary risks, and it’s emblematic of the poor selection integrity and player management that has been a feature of this club for years now

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

It was bad enough that the Melbourne Football Club created yet another humiliating scenario inside its wretched season at Marvel Stadium last Sunday, but the final insult is that it has been commanded to return to the scene of the crime to inflict further punishment on its fans this week. Incidentally, if this match preview, of a game that promises to be one of the most unattractive fixtures in the history of the game, happens to cut out of your computer screen three quarters of the way through, it’s no coincidence. I’ll be mirroring the Demons’ lacklustre effort against St Kilda from last Sunday when they conceded the largest last quarter turnaround for victory in the history of the game.

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.
