There’s a fair bit of history about Sunday morning’s VFL match at Casey Fields between the Casey Demons and Sandringham which marks the end of the latter’s affiliation with St. Kilda.

The two VFL clubs traded their AFL affiliates in 2009 when the Melbourne Demons took on a partnership with the then Casey Scorpions (formerly Springvale) after a successful decade with Sandringham which resulted in premierships in in 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2006. At the same time, the Saints entered into a partnership with the VFA Zebras at the Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

From the 2017 season onwards, the Casey club became known as the “Demons” and they celebrated a premiership flag in 2022.

Meanwhile, the Saints’ have announced that they will be going alone next year with their own independent reserves team and Sandringham will continue in its own right in 2026 so that this week’s game is really the end of an era.

The Demons will be hoping that the game represents something a little more than that as victory over the lowly Zebras will strengthen their claim for a finals berth.

PS: I wonder if the Saints had similar problems to those which we had with Sandringham. Suspect that it is a different era but another alignment comes to an end. Are we the only aligned VFL club left? Can't think of another off the top of my head

Thanks KC 1998-2006 was a very successful time for the MFC without getting the chocolates, four grannies for our affiliate club in Sandy gave us something to smile about. We thought we may have a chance for a double up in 2000 but Bummers ruined those thoughts in brutal fashion.

Just out of interest, are there any other DL’s that played for the old Springvale club?

if sandringham are going it alone in 2026 and the aints are fielding a standalone vfl side... now how many teams will there be in this competition??

Willem Duursma is one of the top draft prospects for 2025 and one of the family of two other AFL players and an AFLW player and also the son of a former Demon reserves player, Dean Duursma. His uncle Jamie Duursma did play some senior football with Melbourne. He’s playing for Casey because he comes from the local Gippsland region but Melbourne is unlikely to get him unless it pulls off some monster trades.

A lot - too many in fact around 22. Hopefully, that means less byes and all teams play each other once.

Our midfield should annihilate theirs.

We have the bye yet again next week so we should see some desperate players wanting to put their hand up for senior selection.

Pity that Kirkwood-Scott has been omitted. He seems to play well when he gets the chance.

@Whispering_Jack agree with Mitch Kirkwood-Scott. Small defender. Excellent kick and makes good decisions which would transfer to AFL requirements. He played 4 games earlier in the year and impressed before injured. Just returned and played his role. Like to see him again before season end.

Among the best of the VFL listed young players for Casey last week. Kicked a goal drifting forward from defence. Go Bloods!

Reckon I saw Kirkwood-Scott this morning at the Captain's Run. With a carryover emergency required for the AFL, hopefully he is a late in tomorrow.

He's also allergic to chest marks as well, still lacking confidence and strength

Sandy adapting to the conditions better. They lead 3.2.20 to 1.1.7.
