    I think Goodwin's main issue this year is getting his side mentally up for the games against the mediocre sides residing in that 11th - 15th range.

    Every time we had a big win or a very meritorious loss to a good side, we've absolutely come out flat as a pancake and totally S T bed against mediocrity.

    1) Excellent performance against GWS in round 1 - worst loss in years to North in round 2

    2) Followed up our best 2 weeks in a very long time (Brisbane and Sydney wins) only to concede 6 quick first quarter goals to St Kilda and play catch up all day.

    3) Put in our fourth best performance of the year on Kings Birthday to then lose a very winnable game to the mediocre Port Adelaide in round 14.

    4) After beating North, the fixture provided us with a very kind 3 weeks of winning football, only to back it up with a pathetic 3 goal first half against a VFL team in Carlton.

    We also got schooled by an extremely average Essendon football club in Gather Round after showing some positive signs against Geelong in round 4.

    Goodwin hasn't arrested this trend and it's been mighty disappointing.

    It sounds like he's safe for next year, but if the decision was hanging in the balance, the Carlton loss should've been one too many. How we lost to a team missing 10 players (and it showed in the VFL game as we thrashed Carlton's seconds who barely had a listed player) is completely unacceptable from the coach and the playing group.

      One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
