Severe reality adjustment required. Major attitude problem.

Don't think his attitude is the issue at all. He tries hard but he's slow and lacks composure, kind of floats around contests not really knowing how to involve himself.

Yes but it’s not like I waved from 50 metres away. It was barely 20 metres so that makes us best friends.

I'm not worried about Kolt. Doesn't mean I think he'll make it, but I think it's too early and I still don't mind his selection: he's a high ceiling, low floor candidate.

He was injured preseason, and deserves a bit of time to get fitness right and find his spot in the system before we write him off.

He has had so many "maybe moments" where he has fumbled or spilt a mark or not been clean with his one touch. It's not what he showed in his under highlights, where he was clean with good hands and strong overhead for his size (I know they are cherry picked highlights).

I don't know if that will translate to AFL level; maybe the extra speed and size and pressure means he is at his limit. But I still think he has attributes that will be valuable if he makes it, and for those reasons I am happy we are giving him a go.

I do think he could use time at Casey to really get on top of the pace of the game but I'm not sure who comes in for him as a half forward. Billings? Sharp? Spargo? Are the only options. So I'm happy they are backing in a kid.

This for me sums Kolt up. For a 15 game player in his second season with no preseason, he is getting into enough right spots hes just not clean at the critical time. With fitness and some more games under his belt this will turn around and he can start to show us what he has got, or hanst got.

I reckon this is the difference between everyone in the massive disposal category most players fall into (somewhere between terrible and good) and the very best ball users. For anyone who's not great (I hate the word elite), there's a period of cog-turning between realising you're a chance to get the footy and getting rid of it. For the best, that cognitive processing is so fast it seems like it doesn't happen.

The great thing about "just get it on the boot" or "blast it down the line" is it dispenses with the need for that processing. In 2021 it gave poor or average disposers freedom to concentrate much more on getting it. What to do with it? That was a problem passed on to Max Gawn, Ben Brown, Tom McDonald and Bayley Fritsch.

Now our players are being asked not to do that anymore, and many are finding it difficult to adjust. (I know that doesn't explain Tholstrup and Windsor, but this post is a bit of a tangent.) Some will get there. Others just aren't naturally good at it. I keep thinking, though, that Tom McDonald shows you don't need to massively improve your kicking to massively improve your effectiveness.

He is comfortably one of the worst technical field kicks I've seen. But the disastrous turnovers have almost completely dried up, and not just because he went forward and spent a lot of time kicking at goals rather than players. He's dependable in the backline as well. In great part, I think, it's about playing within limitations. Where previously he would attempt to bite off kicks Aaron Davey couldn't make, now he takes the safe, although not always completely conservative, option.

I'm sure you can get better at making quicker, better decisions. But for some players, it might be best to demand that they play within their limitations - look for the handball or the easy sideways kick to a better disposer - than hoping they'll increase the speed of their cog-turning.

There is nothing great about this

The kid had an injury that kept him out for 12 weeks. I will hold on passing judgement until he has a full preseason or two under his belt.

Was nibs doing this in his 2nd year? Bit of a revisionist history IMO. He certainly stood out with his work rate, but his disposal used to be horrendous and he was incredibly fumbly.

100% on this.

What’s the common feature of Lever, McVee, Lindsay and Tholstrup? All had greatly interrupted preseasons , none are at their best now. Give Kolt time, I believe he will make it.. Didn’t he kick 2 decent goals in about 10minutrs against StK on the G last year?

Today he had 10 minutes in the last quarter. I would have subed him off at 3/4 time. Just not senior standard at present. We were playing North, if you cannot have a reasonable game today when can you.

Isn’t there a case for giving extra time on some occasions if you are not at the top of your game to see if you can find some form.

Not necessarily risking the result of course.

I really can't understand his draft selection if I'm being completely honest. He's not skillful, he's not quick, he's not tall, he's not mercurial, so what were his strengths?

His draft profile says he is a fierce competitor with an enormous work rate. Did Kolt win our 3km time trial in 2024? Because Darcy Wilson did at the Saints.

To me, he seems like another Goody selection where he's valued competitiveness over what's required in the modern game. I thought by the 2023 draft we were done with this mantra but perhaps it only hit home in 2024.

He has had numerous games this year and IMO rarely justifies his spot in the senior side. A week or two back he went back to Casey for a game which was not more than average and then straight back in. He needs to find form at the lower level. Now I acknowledge he had a poor preseason due to injury.

Thank god someone mentioned this. I was reading this thread thinking to myself, “surely everyone remembers at the end of 2020 when ANB was told he could looks elsewhere. No teams wanted him.

Re Kolt. Never really understood why we were so enthusiastic to get him at the time as he seemingly had no translatable elite traits but happy to be patient as he is now ours.

I do worry that we seem to gift him games. I don’t like the standard it sets for him or his teammates playing at Casey. Maybe I am missing something and he does something specific that isn’t easy to track as a supporter but the eye test does make me a tad nervous at times. Hopefully his teammates feel differently.

The adults are having a conversation. Best you fire your misplaced frustration elsewhere.

If Kolt was on the cusp of being of AFL standard similar to, say Jeffo I would understand getting games into him to get him up to that next standard. But at the moment he is so far off the pace that I don't see how it helps either the team or himself by playing him .He just looks lost out there .There may be valid excuses for this but that should not in its self be a reason for selection. Surely there is an overarching responsibility for the club to try and win games and select a team that may do that. An extended stint at Casey (where at the moment he is no walk up start } will hopefully help him attune to senior football .

Have you had a read through your own thread? Surely you're having a laugh.

At a time where there are numerous far more pressing issues for you hand wringers to be gnashing your teeth over, we have a collective pile on to write off a just turned 20yo, 2nd year player who has had an interrupted preseason and played a grand total of 18 games.

Yep sure, I am the one who is off the mark... 🤣

The mediocre side that is on one less win than us that also beat us by 5 goals? Wilson is still having a far better year than Kolt (who I can almost guarantee he'll get dropped this week). He's an elite runner who finished 4th in the rising star last year and had had games of 3 goals.

Put simply, at this stage, the Saints chose the better player.

I can’t believe people are complaining about his fitness. Or his speed.

I seem to remember that he finished quite well at the combine – so I found the 2023 results. Here they are.

Bear in mind that this was from 2 years ago, so he has probably improved even with interrupted training. He would be right at the top end of our 2KM trial, probably just behind Sharp.

Pretty sure none of the commentators on here can run a 6.17?

2km time trial

Tarkyn O’Leary (Sandringham Dragons/Parkdale Vultures) - 5 minutes, 48 seconds
Darcy Wilson (Murray Bushrangers/Wangaratta Rovers) - 5:52
Ethan Read (Gold Coast Suns Academy/Palm Beach Currumbin) - 5:56
Jordan Croft (Calder Cannons/Maribyrnong Park) - 6:05
Caiden Cleary (Sydney Swans Academy/Sydney University) - 6:06
Aiden O’Driscoll (Perth/Northam Saints) - 6:06
Archie Roberts (Sandringham Dragons/Hampton Rovers) - 6:08
Connor O’Sullivan (Murray Bushrangers/Albury) - 6:11
Joel Freijah (GWV Rebels/Horsham Saints) - 6:13
Harvey Johnston (Sandringham Dragons/Parkdale Vultures) - 6:17
Koltyn Tholstrup (Subiaco/Newtown Condingup) - 6:17

Agility

Lance Collard (Subiaco/North Beach) - 8.157 seconds
Koltyn Tholstrup (Subiaco/Newtown Condingup) - 8.194
Angus Hastie (Geelong Falcons/Geelong West Giants) - 8.204
Bodie Ryan (Glenelg/Brighton) - 8.208
Zane Zakostelsky (Claremont/North Beach) - 8.233

I don't really get the ANB comparisons. He was never a bad player, just a whipping boy. Also picked about 20 picks later so expectations were far lower, but still a better player than Tholstrup at the same stage of his career.

If Tholstrup is to get on ANB's trajectory next year he needs to have cemented his spot in the team, average 18 disposals, 4 tackles and just under a goal a game.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
