The fact that they were kicking accurately this morning tells us that it’s kicking for goal in-game that’s the problem. And that’s a psychological problem, not physical.

They need to simulate the pressure that accompanies kicking for goal in a match (when it matters). Maybe $100 to the player for each shot that goes through (from a spot specified by the coach) and $50 from the player, paid into the xmas party fund, if they miss. 🤣

Would count for salary cap purposes. [Insert pseudo-humorous comment here].

We just had a bye, why does Max need another rest?

We still want to win games of footy & I’m sure Max wants another All Australian 😉

You are sounding a lot like Simon there. If we win contested footy, generate more inside 50’s than them, on percentages we should win, so don’t sweat too much on the small stuff, like goal kicking, forwards leading at the ball carrier etc.

I may well be, but that's the situation we're in.

We prioritised certain skill sets as now we're having to make the most of what we have. I would even argue that consistent forward pressure is rated a higher trait than being able to hit 5 set shots in a row.

We can't turn a Jeep into a Ferrari at this point. As far as accuracy goes we just have to hope that it's as good as it can be.

If we were a basketball team we'd spend 1/4 of the game at the free throw line ( doing so half as much again as many opponents ) only to miss 9 out of 10 throws.

In other words we're the horse that will not drink.

Quantity over quality just isn't winning us games.

As to accuracy... the converse to your thinking. I fervently hope we're currently the worst we can be and there's a lot of improvement to come.

I hope.... but I know it's not happening.

ON GOAL KICKING… it is also harder to deliver a skill after repeat sprint efforts. That is what i would add to training- 3 100m sprints then a shot on goal. This would better replicate game situation, lactic acid accumulation, breathing changes etc than just a few kicks at training.

l have thought about this too.

Great idea !

I'd hate if it were 9 out of 10 free throws. I'd be hoping it's more like 4 out of 10 jump shots and 2 out of 10 three pointers!

It probably is on the worse end and there are definitely players who we know can shoot for goal better ie Fritta, Petty but I just can't see the accuracy ever being at sniper agent levels I'm afraid.

The probable reality is that in any given game there are maybe half a dozen kicks that currently miss ( for us ) which ought to be gettable. Why ? Just my observations.. sometimes as simple as choice of kick. Now I'm not having a go at him as he's not alone, but there's been times recently where in the past Kozzi has elected for a drop punt with a straight run up. He's enjoyed good success with that. Why he chooses "around the corner " 45deg out around 30/40 m ?? FIIK !! 🤷‍♂️

But he has mates now selecting a low % shot where they ought to be kicking straight. Fad, fashion ,lairising.. who knows.

Then there's poor technical kicking.

Both things can be changed/corrected. One by direction, the other by coaching.

As to the yips.. well that's between the ears stuff but can also be bettered with practice. Kicking needs to be automatic and not thought through.

Do, not think.

I think the best way to overcome that psychological issue is repeated practice so they build confidence and ingrain their technique.

Agreed, repeated practice is the key but it has to be repeated practice with good/restructured technique otherwise you just get good at being bad.

How do we know that they’re not practicing as much as they should be? We see a brief captain’s run and a brief flush run each week. There’s a main training session two days before gameday at Casey (or Gosch’s if the upcoming match is interstate). We know they train in other ways: pool, gym, indoor skills training, etc. They only get one day off per week. How do we know they’re not practicing goal kicking somewhere?

Hopefully it's not at the pool! 🤣

GW : how do you know the team gets 1 day off a week?

arent they entitled to a 2 day break like other workers?

Just wondering .

A few of them have told me they get one day off per week, eg. Clarrie, Shane, Luker.

The missed shots (and dud forward entries) wouldn't look as bad if we went back to stopping the ball from immediately rocketing down the other end at warp speed. Having the worst conversion in the league is a bad thing, but keeping the ball at our end and the opposition under pressure would be nice too.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
