Shocking umpiring, we did pretty well considering the game wasn't a fair one. Surely we need some kind of arc to right the many wrongs that happen in a game like that. I don't care if it slows it down...until they can umpire fairly and un-bias they deserve a big brother making sure they do their job properly.

Daicos really is loved by the umps. I mean we got within a point against a good team and those bloody umps. I'm no sook, but that wasn't a fair game!

Granted we missed a few we should have got, we had a couple of chances to win it towards the end but just can't finish as well as others. Still...didn't seem like a fair game.

I agree but neither Petty or JVR are playing as go to key tall forwards. Neither are close to being one at the moment unfortunately. Petty is highly unreliable at best and no AFL forward at worst .I’ve being a JVR fan but as yet he’s very lucky to hold his place in the team

We had a key tall he just plays with no physicality whatsoever. Petty has to be the most frustrating player on our list, so many times today he just had to make a contest and with the slightest body from Moore he just gave up competing. Also missed a sitter in the 1st half which proved costly.

Great effort Dees.

We almost won against the top side.

Let’s win the next game.

An absolute disgrace. I was already livid at him for screaming at a first year player in Lindsey after that 50m penalty and then he has a go at the greatest ruckman of all time for a bad kick in the last 30 seconds. He can go and get [censored].

Lindsey dropped his head after that spray and continued to make mistakes. As if he needed an over the top verbal spray from a senior 'leader' player.

Like everyone else on here I'm bemoaning the decision making and skill errors our most senior guys make at crucial times in a game.

Perhaps it was just me but I thought that the pre-game stuff with ND seemed just a little more poignant than usual.

Agree. The lap of honour, the interaction with every player, made my eyes leak. This looked more like a final farewell to me. He is one of my heroes.

I turned to my old man when Max went for it and said I'm not unhappy he went for it. He had to.

May is a firey character, but he should know better. With 30 seconds on the clock, you have to take a risk.

I suspect May would like to have his time back. I've no problem with Max doing what he did. Rationally, nor should any other Demon.

Agree .... I was watching with my daughter.
Declared "You gotta go."
He went for the open side, and Gawned it.

The game was gone by then anyway for all the reasons mentioned in this thread already.
Was going to be a Hail Mary play whatever happened.

Picket fence are you out there? I never thought I would say this " we have to play Jefferson for the next 4 games" all the other KPF's on our list are not up to the job. We drafted Jefferson as a KPF. So let's find out if he has the goods. We sure won't find out playing him at Casey any longer or not playing in either team as an emergency. Play the kid for God's sake.

Jonathan Brown pointed out the chase kozzie did & said he could have tackled him but pickett was more worried about putting his arms out complaining to the umpire.

JVR CHB or Bust! Time to bite the bullett, a 'Lucky" selection in the first place over a white hot Jeffo. Time to reset!

Brown should shut his mouth. McCreery is very very fast and Kosi was chasing him for 40 goddamn meters!

Kosi was completely correct to expect a free for him running too far.

Just as in the last Pies were paid marks that travelled at best 10m.

In a game decided by a bloody point, a side having nearly 30% more free kicks is diabolical.

I know people aren't sold on AJ but he would have crashed those packs & bought the ball down to ground today & probably would have been a bit stronger to go with Cameron or mcstay

love that all the supporters from the 16 other clubs are sticking up for us tonight, feels nice for a change 🫠🫠

I get the desire to play him but he’s had 2 good weeks, he still has to show week to week, contest to contest that he’s too good for vfl.

Then we have to decide who comes out. JVR needs a consistent run now that he’s come back to the team. He didn’t put it on the scoreboard but he showed he was too good for VFL.

Can’t drop Melk. Don’t need an extra tall in for Fritsch. No one loves Petty form but he’s more reliable long down the line than anyone else we’ve got.

Given our midfield doesn’t kick to leads we’ve probably got the best combination of talls available right now.

Hard game to analyse outside of we let ourselves down with goalkicking again. Sure, we butchered the ball at times, but so did they. They just butchered it less.

If Trac could kick, he'd be the best player in the comp by a mile. That miss streaking into goal had to be kicked on the outside of his foot, not a drop punt when your body is facing the pocket.

Thought we controlled the game for at least 3 quarters, but they were more efficient. We did so well to make them turn the ball over multiple times, only to take the wrong option going forward.

I do think that Trac and Clarry are trending back to their best though, and soon, history suggests they'll be more damaging on the scoreboard.

We still failed to turn many of our slingshot chances into scores and when we did get it inside, we missed 3-4 chances that would have had us comfortable winners. Starting with Melky's miss from 30m straight in front and Fritta's wasted chance to go back and kick 4.

Compare Petty's miss in the pocket to Mihocek's goal from pretty much the same position. One kicked it straight through the middle, one kicked it on the full.

Rivers straight out the front of the stoppage in the 1st or 2nd quarter misses, but Sidebottom kicks his.

It only takes a couple of opportunities to go our way and we're winners.

A disappointing loss but I'm surprisingly philosophical. I hope the team responds next week.

In what game has he done that? JVR was fine in the ruck.

I like big AJ, but he’s just a more enjoyable version of JVR. There’s no evidence he’s any better.

A get out of jail left foot that goes into space alone would a game changer for him. And he’s half decent on it too.

His panic handballing to avoid getting tackled is arguably a bigger issue tho.

First of all, the effort was great, and it was good to see that they kept pushing. However, the umpires were not the deciding factor; it was again the forward line and skills that beat us. Players were unable to lower their eyes. Trac, Rivers, Oliver, getting worse at it, just throwing on the boot, and the kick goes nowhere. The number of players who kick it higher than longer causes players to wait; therefore, the opposition stops the run. There was a failure to control Josh Daicos, and Sidebottom just ran free, with players jogging to man up when everyone can see where the ball is going next. Yes, I'm harsh, but those are the facts: effort A+; skills C-. Now, next week will be interesting to see how they back up, and we all know how flaky Port can be—great one day, poor the next.

Leaders were sloppy with the ball, especially Gawn & Trac. This hurt us a lot. Gawn looks to pinpoint a pass in the 3rd qtr, it was a 3 on 1, terrible decision and terrible execution, hit the basic kick, know your strengths, cost us a goal and it happens often.

How good is Disco - Does the number 10 jumper proud, you can see why the club gave it to him.

Bowey & May also had great games, Clarry more involved this week too.

So sick of losing to these bastards.

So sick of losing by the same method over and again.

So sick of missing easy shots at goal.

So sick of seeing experienced players panic and butcher the footy.

So sick of seeing big bodied players with no physicality.

So sick of seeing us get worked over on the rebound and giving up easy kicks to loose oppo.

So sick of seeing our players give away dumb free kicks.

So sick of not seeing those same tiggy touchwood decisions going our way.

Just sick of it.

Although proud of the effort today, I'm sick of going into games like this fearing the worst, having a gallant performance and then praising the result like we're a bottom 4 rebuilding team and not a team with just as many premiership players as the opposition.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.
