ND on selection

An article has gone up re: team seletion for the Tigers match on the MFC website

I can't see Neitz playing, despite ND refusing to rule it out -

"I don't think he'll play on Friday, but I didn't think he'd play last week either. The big fella might come and say he's right to go, I don't know.
Miller and Dunn are mentioned as potential replacements, but Newton's name - as usual - is missing.

"Today's training is very important for a lot of guys. Brad Miller, Lynden Dunn, Simon Buckley … there's a number of players that could come into the team," Daniher said.

Possible ND will pull out a last-minute surprise and choose Newton? Would be unlike him given he normally talks up potential debutants in the week before the game.

Daniher also said Adem Yze, who was a late withdrawal from the Demons' Queen's Birthday clash with Collingwood with a groin injury, and Matthew Whelan (foot) are both a chance to face the Tigers.

Buckley might struggle to get a gig if one of these guys is going to come in, particularly considering ND referred to how hard it was to drop Brown for the QB game.

Looks like TJ and Neitz will force at least two changes.

newton cant get a look in. if he isnt even on the radar after being the most prolific goalscorer on our list the last 5 weeks and our FF goes down...one wonders how he will sqeeze into the team.

If Neitz doesn't play, they have to play juice!

Surely you replace him with someone who has been playing decent football, Dunn would be the other and more likely option.

Just saw Daniher on Channel 10 news. Sounds like the most likely change to the forward line will be Yze in for Neitz and Robbo at Full Forward.

Pickett is a near certainty to line up as well.

Shame, I was kind of hoping to see Buckley debut instead.

Watching ND on Channel 10, Byron would have to be a dead-set certainty to play.

Yze and Wheels to come into close consideration too.

Posted

Byron to be unleashed!

Opening bounce he should start in the center, line up opposed foley and see if he still wants the hard ball :)

Pickett's skin folds are the lowest in his AFL career, this fact is being overshadowed and IMO is brilliant news, hope he tears it up friday! :D

If Whelan comes in, nearly certain that one of Frawley, Pettard or Holland will be dropped.

 given that you have named 3 of our back 6 its probably at least a 50-50 bet :P

how long have we had newton for? ND tends to do this with some recruits, keeps them under wraps. Much like he did with bate, and look how good he is now..

Newton looks a bit light on to play at this point of time. I think Dunn or Miller would come in before him.

IMO better to give him a taste in the final 2 or 3 games - ready for next year.

newton came in the same draft as bate and dunn (newton is a month older than bate). they were all bottom age players, and i think the footy dept thought they would all come close to top 10 picks the following year if left to mature. (bate was taken at 13, dunn at 15)

newtons first season was apparently a write off with a back injury. last year he kicked 52 (?) goals for the sandy seconds including a haul of 12. this year he has managed 26 in the sandy 1st side from 9 games. apparently the preseason just past was the first he completed fully...

newton 193 cm 90 kg

dunn 192 cm 90 kg

miller 194 cm 96 kg

according to the mfc website...

I applaud ND's timing when giving his players their debuts... but in other cases they were often coming off 1 maybe 2 good games at Sandy FOR THE YEAR. Eg, Garland, Petterd, Bate, Jones.... who all started quietly and gained pace... Jones starred in a few games before he had his debut, Bate starred in 2 from memory, Garland didn't star in ANY, and Petterd was very solid without being spectacular.... Newton has played 5 good ones and is a year older (roughly) that Bate at his debut...

Oh, and the talk of Juice not being developed enough in the body are greatly exaggerated. He's a big boy... just all arms and legs. When he goes in for the hard ball, flies for a mark or puts on a shepherd or bump he's not being pushed off the ball. He may not be Brock in this regard, but he's strong. VERY strong.

Would people think Holland would be likely to miss out? Would Richo be too mobile for big Dutch. If so I can't see another match up for him and would suggest Miller may need to come in to facilitate big man coverage at both ends

Hmmm... Fair call. Will probably be either Holland or Frawley as our defence may be too top heavy v Richmond. Can't see there being more than 3 changes to a winning side though (2 forced, 1 tactical)

Wont surprise me if they bring in Miller and play him out of the goal square, where he can try and reproduce the 6 goal effort he had with Sandy. This is the perfect opportunity for him with Neitz out. He is under the pump and needs to prove he can be valuable to the team beacuse he hasnt worked at CHF enough.

Wouldn't surprise me either but might I suggest Miller had the opportunity to prove his value with Sandy last Sunday by backing up with another good game. What did he do? He put in another stinker by all accounts, much as he's inclined to do at AFL level. Play the kid for God's sake, is it really such a big deal.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
