I really really hate the idea of Bevo becoming our coach.

He's as stubborn and tactically rigid as a dog with a bone.

His list of quality greyhounds has performed more like whippets.

He really plays favourites with some whilst leaving others in the doghouse.

GRRRRR!

Doggies fans think he is stubborn and some accuse of him of wasting a generational list, sounds familiar.

Not sure Bevo would walk away from a team with Darcy in it though

I don’t immediately like this idea.

Has proven to make some odd, emotional decisions in the past when their team isn’t performing.

In a similar vein to Goodwin, aside from his flag season, not sure he’s got the best out of the lists that he’s had.

Generational list. We put a stop to that in 2021 so can’t blame him for that one.

I do feel like Bevo could suit for head coach. At the same time, he regularly

• Has massive selection blunders

• Failed to capitalize post premiership success

• Major culture and standard issues

Would much prefer we go for another assistant coach like Enright

Board members, by definition almost, need to be supporters of the club and have the interests of the club above their professional aspirations in the game. The fact that he played games is immaterial to why Steven Smith is the next President.

So Jamar, Jones, etc - they make me nervous but not the Board.

Correct on all counts. This century we’ve been clubhouse leaders in having non-supporters on the board, or at least very recent adherents to the cause. And that includes presidents. Stuff on the public record would suggest that there is more than one on the current board who saw their first Melbourne AFL game as a supporter after they were appointed to the board, or thereabouts.

You don’t want linament sniffers on the board, but if they are strong supporters at least you know they care in making decisions on the direction of the club. 

Unlike with other businesses directors can’t be shareholders of MFC, so they can’t align their interests with outcomes by having shares. However you would like their interests to be aligned with the future of the club by at least having the emotional investment as a red and blue lover.

Gut feel says he'd be a fantastic boost and would sell a vision to the players straight away.

He can sell a story to his players. I can recall in our game against them in 2020 at Metricon (yes COVID years) Fox Footy interviewed him just before the first bounce and he mentioned that he reved his boys up with some random boxing fight that nobody had heard from like 1961 or something. The Dogs and Dees were on the cusp of the 8 at the time in a must win game but they came out far more invested than us and beat us quite easily.

I'm also weary that he's had just as much of a roller coaster coaching career as Goodwin and has had absolute gun elite players like Dunkley and B Smith head out the door.

Yes exactly. The messiah coach seldom works. From memory only Leigh Matthews has been successful, maybe Malthouse, although Hardwick seems to heading in the right direction. All others I can think of haven’t worked. Best to go for fresh ideas.

Not a fan as our coach. He is very protective of the players but doesn't seem a team player. He has burnt a variety of FD staff. He wants to be The Boss and gets sooky when he doesn't get his way.

We need a unifying person and someone who can consult and negotiate in a new mfc team and imv that isn't Bevo.

i'm not convinced horse longmire will coach at afl-level again, and if he does i suspect it'll be tasmania not melbourne of the devils / demons variety

it surprises me when people say beveridge is tactically rigid - with family of family being mad footscray fans, their biggest complaint is that he throws the team around TOO much, experimenting with players in different roles etc. to the detriment of team balance and surety of player roles

some of the moves work - i.e. richards from half-back into the midfield (equivalent of rivers for us) - and others obviously don't (daniel from half-back to half-forward, playing macrae anywhere other than in the midfield)

what's interesting to me is that those two 'failed' moves were tried for 2 seasons and then both players - who were on significant contracts - were traded for perceived 'unders' in order to get their hefty contracts off the books

he and goodwin are pretty similar in my books - very much relationship-based coaching styles

So we are looking at a coach that has wasted his own list & a club with cultural issues, who has won 5 v 7 vs Goodwin and got smashed in a GF. Only Melbourne would make this move! lol

I did like the way he treated Jamarrah.

Not on the hands and knees method we went after Oliver.

Destroyed our Season/seasons.

Having many contacts around the club could start him up and running.

If Goody retires early it’s a yes from me.

I think he is a fit for us. Those saying he should have won more flags. Well rule out 2021 so which other years did he have a better list than the premiers.

I also like James Hird for the skill factor he would inject into the group.

As previous comments alluded to, Beveridge is literally Goodwin 2.0. Plays favorites, stubborn in the sense of selections, forced heavy changes to the list post flag, game style/gameplan not very noticeable and in terms of philosophy, very similar in regards to how they coach teams.

I’d much rather we search for the next McCrae or Kingsley. Jaymie Graham is highly rated during his 3-4 years at West Coast including a flag as forward coach and with further 2 experience at Freo, he may be worth the risk to try and regenerate the list as I still think we are good enough if properly managed.

What’s there to lose with a new president incoming in addition?

You are so right about Bevo’s standing among Doggie fans! A very accurate analysis touching on the similarities between their criticisms and DLander criticism of Goody!

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills with some of these comments. Beveridge is so different from Goodwin. He's pushed out several senior players that he didn't believe were up to snuff. Was happy for Daniel and Macrae to play VFL last year, he's a far more attacking and experimental coach than Goodwin. Turned Rory Lobb into one of the better defenders in the comp, and Ed Richards into a gun midfielder. Never found him to be rigid in his tactics at all. Doesn't suffer culture killers no matter how good they are. Keeping JUH out is the total opposite of how we handled Oliver.

He certainly wouldn't be my first choice but he seems absolutely nothing like Goodwin as a coach.

What's your point? Oliver burned the club for half a season and a pre-season and was allowed to come back into the team as if nothing happened. Should standards only be enforced on players with an ordinary CV?

Yeah, this is a weird one.

Being fair, Beveridge is due some credit for being able to take his players into a mental space where they could excel in 2016 despite the absolute carnage of club politics going on in the previous seasons.

However, since then the Bulldogs have managed just one season in which they won a final and, bizarrely, have never finished in the top 4.

Seems like Beveridge either gets the team going hard at the right time of year, or has them just kind of plodding along at a level frankly beneath their capabilities.

There seems to be a pair of exit doors at the Bulldogs - one for players leaving because they aren't happy with the culture of the club or are looking for more respect (most notably Dunkley, but I'd argue Daniel and Macrae both fit this) and one for players who take the seemingly unaccountable culture too far or who fall out with the 'group' (Hunter, Smith, Stringer, and it increasingly looks like Ugle-Hagan).

Losing Caleb Daniel, Jackson Macrae and Bailey Smith in one season, for a couple of okay draft picks and Matt Kennedy, is a disaster. All three are now in form comparable to the best of their career, and two of them were vice-captains!

Anyway, long story story; Bulldogs have underperformed compared to their list, and recently their list has leaked quality players for apparently cultural reasons.

Under Beveridge, they don't have a season-on-season expectation of contending.

yes, amazingly, the top tier players get treated very differently

that's the case at every footy club

if someone like jvr was behaving like jamara, i would expect he would be treated very differently to how oliver was treated too

Spot on. They're polar opposites.

Back when Twitter was Twitter and mostly good fun, Bulldogs supporters would come together on selection afternoon and speculate on what series of moves - somewhere between moderately eccentric and bat**** insane - might be made this week.
