If Tholstrup is fit and in no danger of aggravating his injury which I’m sure is the case I’d play him. I’d also play Lindsay under the same covenant. The sooner all these young guys are playing together it won’t be long until they start driving the standards. New leaders will appear and old leaders will step back. This is what we desperately need. At years end Goodwin retires, new coaches start. Petracca and/or Oliver are traded and more draftees arrive. I’m confident about the future but jeez this year is going to be tough.

Yeh cause Zaharakis was part of so much success!

Not the point. The point is these kinds of practices are common-place across the AFL. Because they work as part of a balanced approach to training and in particular, recovery. It's not soccer vs skills training, it's soccer vs laps of the pool or time on an exercise bike.

I posted the Zaharakis one as an illustration of the above and because he covered the when and why well in the context of an AFL team's training program, but there are plenty of other examples. Here for your viewing pleasure, Adelaide AFL players playing soccer.

... and Sydney Swans:

My problem with them playing soccer is really just where I choose to take my frustration with the club atm. Here we are struggling with a new game plan, shocking disposal and the bulk of the players playing below what we've seen in the past and there they are running around laughing and playing soccer. If they were winning, united and their disposal efficiency was higher I wouldn't care less.

Another way to look at it is that playing soccer removes the "excuse" that the oval shaped AFL ball is the reason for poor kicking. In other words, if they can't kick a soccer ball correctly, then they've got problems (mechanical, psychological) that need to be straightened out before we can expect them to kick an AFL football properly.

Kudos to you for admitting it. Now if everyone else could follow suit we could stop the ridiculous discussion about a non-issue.

How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?

I tend to disagree

The different shape of the balls requires different technique, no?

Therefore if one’s skills with AFL ball are deficient, ought one practice with that ball?

I make no comment on the benefits of practising with a soccer ball for body movement and activating different muscles and movement patterns. It’s why as a golfer/cyclist/runner/surfer I do exercises specific to those sports but also different stuff for balance and general functional movement

OK Ghosty @Ghostwriter I see you disagreeing haha.

I'm sure you've been asked but right as of now who do you think are Goodys top five faves from watching on?

Also this has nothing to do with the speculation of him playing senior players over others etc. Just that we all have faves (even if we can't admit) and wondering whom Goody is warming to most atm.

We don't need no penetration? We don't need no ball control?

Set up the guillotine y’all. The boys have a day off today. I know right! How dare they have a day off when we’re 0-4! I’m so outraged that I’m gonna flood Demonland with my ridiculous whinging and whining.

And by day off I mean there’s no scheduled training of any type. Many of them choose to train in some capacity on a day off, some are involved in footy clinics for kids or visiting elderly and/or ill fans. But still… wah wah wah 😩

Also, they all attended a club function last night, a trivia night with player-sponsors, and get a load of this… they were having fun!!! Preposterous!!! I even saw some of them laughing!!!

Surely you know I’m gonna say he doesn’t have favourites, and that’s because I believe he doesn’t. If he does, he sure hides it well.

I took issue with your comment because I think it’s highly disrespectful to suggest a head coach selects his “favourites” over others in the side. That’s so unproductive and extremely unprofessional. Do you really think, especially at 0-4, Goody would prioritise mate-ship above everything else?

So is main training tomorrow then?

Yeah. It’s at Casey behind locked gates and it’s where the serious stuff happens. It usually goes for two and a half hours or so and there’s nary a soccer ball to be seen.

Edit: tomorrow’s session will decide if X is available for this weekend. He was “almost there” for the Geelong match, so I reckon he’ll pass the test tomorrow 🤞🏽

Also Judd’s been told he’s looking good for the Freo match and he’s delighted with this.

Geez Louise 🙄

Indeed it is . Coaches have been gaining advantages from other sports for years. Players have already had hundreds of hours skills and match practice, even before being drafted. Maybe early pre-season some skills are a little rusty. But it's ludicrous to think a few more minutes handling a Sherrin would change anything, especially given kicking a soccer ball still involves similar balance and coordination.

BTW is it true the batsman whose average is almost double everyone else's practised hitting a ball - a GOLF BALL - with a STUMP. I dunno, maybe that helped him hit a cricket ball with a cricket bat.

At Gosch’s last Thursday a dog ran towards the boundary line and looked as though he wanted to run onto the field. The owner got there in time to put his lead back on and walk him away. The funny thing is the dog had a tennis ball in his mouth. I turned to the Demonlander next to me and said imagine the apocalyptic melts on DL if a tennis ball was on the field. 🙃

That's great to hear.

But should they look at bringing him back via Casey for 1 week to shake the cobwebs out. He's missed a lot of footy. I note that Freo brought back Hayden Young via the WAFL last week.

I think each case should be looked at individually, ie. no blanket rule. Imo Judd should absolutely come straight back into the seniors. His absence has been relatively short and his young age likely means he’s healed earlier than an older player would. If confidence and eagerness is also taken into account, he’s more than ready.

Maybe the boys could learn some evasive skills from the dog.

At least we would see a bit of mongrel on the field.

Sorry, couldn't resist 😅

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The media has performed a complete reversal in its coverage of the Melbourne Football Club over the past month and a half. Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

  • REPORT: Sydney

A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.

The Demons controlled the contest from the outset, though inaccurate kicking kept the Swans in the game until half time. But after the break, Melbourne put on the jets and blew Sydney away and the demolition job was complete.
