$1.3m - $700k = $600k.

According to Fox Footy he's on 1.5M. I think the contract is back ended.

So King effectively told him that he’s not playing to the level, that he has to earn his place in the team and instead of taking it as a challenge to get better, he cracked the sads and went straight to the media to throw us under the bus.

Got it.

Shocking attitude, he can go.

This went through my mind as well. Bit of an OTP reaction if true

The AFL media doesn’t operate in an isolated sphere, devoid of all media conventions, practices and methodologies. In fact, I wouldn’t even say it’s overly unique in terms of the media cycle.

My point still stands and I’ve said it numerous times. If people want to be fantasists and drive the notion that all reporting relating to the MFC is filled with falsehoods, mistruths and fictional narratives, that’s on them. It isn’t reality and the end of the day, the media do not just ‘make up stories’. That’s not to say that everything happens as expected via reports, but that is the end game when you’re dealing with real-time information.

I also think a massive issue is that a significant number of people who consume media in general, are not able to deduce the difference between an opinion and a fact. Media literacy in Australia is appalling, but you see it multiple times on here when a journalist/AFL media personality delivers an opinion and people treat this a statement of fact. They are not the same thing at all.

I don't think all reporting about the MFC is made up.

I just take issue with the idea that AFL journalists have any integrity whatsoever.

I think these leaks speak volumes for Guerra's (in)ability to run a tight ship. Compare this with PJ and it's not even a competition.

What day is Morris or Cleary sending out the “Bayley Fritsch told to explore his options” tweet?

I didn’t get the coaching job so I think he’s safe!

The next Mark Neeld you reckon?

The last time Demonland was all on the same pages was when we needed a strong man.

Let's hope not.

We have no idea whether he can coach yet.

Short memories on here.

If this is true and we're trading Trac, Clarry, May and McVee, it's completely at odds with the messaging from both Guerra and King about finals next year or the year after.

I'm giving the club the benefit of the doubt. Hierra and Lamb have both said don't pay any attention to the media, watch our socials. So like @Jaded No More , I'm expecting confirmation one way or other today regarding our true intentions with Clarry.

Don't really see the comparison. Neeld came to a young team filled with outside runners and flankers and tried to turn them into Collingwood lite. It was a square peg in a round hole.

King is in rebuild mode and being given the chance to get clean air.

High chance he is reading this right now with popcorn and enjoying the real power he has watching this thread spiral to 200 pages and may reply in person shortly.

Hmm seen some conflicting reports about that.

Hopefully this is the last year of friends asking "what's going on at Melbourne?"

Clarry's year by averages:

Disposals: 25.5 (above afl average)

Kicks: 10.8 (above afl average)

Handballs: 14.7 (elite according to afl metric)

marks: 2.9 (below afl average)

tackles: 5.4 (well above afl average)

clearance: 5.5 (well above afl average)

I know that these stats in a vacuum are not entirely indicative but assertions that clayton isnt giving us any output or doesnt have value are just ridiculous.

You can have as many smooth movers transitioning the ball fast on the outside, but you still need one or two guys to go and win a hard ball in and under. Winning the ball at contest is still what gives you the edge in big games and finals.

Letting clayton go would take the cake in diabolically bad MFC list decisions.

Hoping this is just media beat up.

If the club have decided that they need to move on without Oliver and Petracca, I don't like it but I accept it on the condition that we also punt those responsible for the absurd contracts which have left us with this mess. Number one in the gun is Tim Lamb - he is borderline incompetent in every aspect of his job.

Agree. What we are witnessing right now is a clear indication of just how inept and dysfunctional our club has been for the past few years.

It's embarrassing and everyone involved from previous coach, board, entitled players and anyone who turned a blind eye to the unfolding mess should be ashamed.

2021 doesn't seem that long ago but the failures of our club since then are extraordinary.

Bring out the broom and start again.

This situation definitely has some similarities to both the Mitchel Hawthorn takeover and the McRae Collingwood takeover.

Both clubs had:

  • long-running coaches who moved/were moved along, with a new first-time coach coming in.

  • had old, outdated game plans that frustrated their fans

  • Recent success with their current list

Then, when the new coach comes in:

  • High-paid players were moved out (Collingwood: Grundy and Trelor, Hawthorn: Omera and Mitchell)

    • Although saying this, I believe Trac and Clarry are a different level of player, even if their past two years have been down

  • A promise of a fast, modern game plan was made

Obviously, there are many differences in our situation, but I'm personally quite bullish on what this could bring about

Clarry has been my favourite player since that GWS Debut. So seeing him in another team's colours won't feel right

But I very much could see us playing some high-end footy in the back end of next year, with the first half being an adjustment period for the new game plan

McCrae had Daicos into the midfield. We have …?

Hawthorn cleaned out its stars and now look at them. King and his team have a responsibility to reinvigorate the list. Let's be honest, 24 and 25 appalling results given our premiership in 21. The midfield was slammed every week this season for been too slow. Our kicking from Clarry and Petracca highest paid duo, was rubbish. I applaud King if he brings speed and skill to the midfield.

This is a warning to the club against doing any monster-long contracts with players

Can you imagine how we would melt down if, after two more years on the bottom, Kossie decides he wants to leave? That is not unforseeable

Why isn't Viney being told the same thing if we're completely looking to revamp our Midfield?

Because we still need inside mids and Viney is an A grade citizen who bleeds red and blue

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.

Following an injury-interrupted start to the season, McVee struggled to maintain the standard he established in 2025 as he pursued an expanded role within the team structure. He remained a firm fan favourite and the club had hoped to negotiate a new contract with the former rookie selection from Western Australia, whose partner, Lily Johnson, plays for Melbourne's AFLW side. Those hopes were dashed when he expressed his desire to return to his home state and play for Fremantle. Like all players who have worn the red and blue and are leaving this year, we wish him well in the future.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #5 Christian Petracca

The superstar Demon midfielder made a successful return to the fold after his devastating injury last year and the subsequent fallout from the treatment he received, during which time he sought to depart the club. Petracca's professionalism and strong play, both in the midfield and up forward, were outstanding and resulted in him being runner-up in the club's best and fairest count. However, early this week, the club's new CEO, Paul Guerra, confirmed that the under-contract Petracca has again requested a trade, adding that he would only be allowed to leave for a “quality offer that turns our head". No doubt some Demon heads are already spinning.
