When does our list manager come under scrutiny?

In 2021 we had May, Lever, Ben Brown, Langdon and Hibberd play in a premiership. Adam Tomlinson might have too if he hadn't done his knee. Also on the list were Melksham who has been more than serviceable, Majak Daw and Mitch Brown who were never going to be more than depth players.

Since then it's been Luke Dunstan, Brodie Grundy, Lachie Hunter, Josh Schache, Jack Billings, Shane McAdam, Tom Fullarton, Tom Campbell, Harry Sharp and Jai Culley. I'll give the last three an exemption as it's early days (although Sharp has shown nothing in two games) but the other seven have collectively added absolutely nothing to our list.

Did we just get lucky between 2017 and 2021?

Mind boggles why we were not able to bring some A grade talent while being premiership fancies.

I understand frustration at losses. Believe me, I didn't love that game either but to hurl abuse at the players who looked completely heartbroken at what had just occurred left me feeling sick. Obviously things need to be fixed, possibly things going on to affect their performance also? There is more to life than footy. Get a grip!

Couldn’t agree more. Absolutely disgusting behaviour. This person should get named and shamed. The players don’t go out to lose each week and whilst it wasn’t the result we wanted ( far from it) hurling abuse like that is not ok. Go Dees

Dunstan was an okay midfielder but always going to be back-up for the likes of Tracc and Oliver  Grundy was a disaster but looked worth the risk. Hunter was cruelled by injuries as has McAdam been. Schache and Billings were secondhand high draft picks that were probably worth the small risk vs the windfall if a change of team realised their potential. Finally, Fullarton who? Only May, Lever, Grundy and arguably Hunter were topliners when we got them. Always some of the lesser recruits were likely to be misfires. Given injuries and missing out on some of the topliners could it be more that we've been unlucky recently?

Pretty smart by Goody to play his early season “Mulligan” card this round.

Something stinks on field at the moment and it can’t be explained by stats. We look confused. How many times were we caught about to kick it? Seems like there is absolutely no talk out there or on field leadership. We haven’t looked this listless in a decade.

You could see it last week. No one set up a zone when AJ had the last shot on goal incase he missed.

Well if we weren’t already struggling to get players in. Petracca setting the club on fire post season certainly didn't help.

Houston was 100% a demon until then. Meanwhile our #6 is playing at Casey while Howes & Woewoden get games.

Melbourne were very disappointing today but the overreaction of Demon supporters feels even more frustrating. Most years in the last 50 round 1 hasn't even started for another few days! There's so much season left and it wouldn't surprise if some coaches have been tweaking their programs to ensure their teams are peak-fitness somewhere round late August rather than burning out in July.

We've had one shocker from two games and it feels like most supporters are now backing us for the spoon. Do people forget that the Lions lost their first three last year?  They improved; Why can't we? In 2020 Richmond came back from the post-round 1 COVID hiatus and scored only 5.6 in a draw against a Collingwood they were expected to beat and then were almost written off after losing to the previous season's 9th and 14th by 5 and 4 goals the next two games, with more low scores.

 

As for the coach, usually the coach replacing a premiership coach does not do the same. Apart from Chris Scott, whose coaching career has been impressive ever since, who has replaced a premiership coach and also won a flag soon after that? If we sack Goody it may well shut the door on Gawn, Tracc and Clarrie winning another flag in Melbourne colours. (And the promising youngsters - who mainly didn't even play today - will have to wait as we re-build.)

Have posted about our trades since our flag a few times, can’t knock their drafting if young kids but when you compared what the Cats, lions, pies & hawks have acquired ready made talent vs zip! If you consider premiership clock we were in is baffling, was it cap space as we committed to Trac, Brayshaw, Viney to long term deals.

Fritsch isn't playing well. Kosi hasn't played yet. Roo could still easily improve this year. Jefferson was subbed off early injured. Do you really think better delivery today wouldn't have also helped? 

Paint it however you want if Lions played the same standard they did early last year they wouldn't have won the flag last year, forward line or not. I've no idea what our ceiling is but surely we can play better than today.

Possibly. But also Geelong has a country lifestyle, Brisbane has less of the public gaze and Collingwood has lots of more, facilities and supporters. Not sure about Hawthorn. But maybe there are all sorts of reasons why we have missed out or the above have done so well. It was frustrating missing out on Houston.

Fritsch couldn't give a [censored]. Pickett is a small Fwd/Mid (He isn’t structurally fixing our fwd line, he’ll certainly help.)

Roo looks a shell of himself from last year & that back spasm has rattled him.

Sorry, are you saying we should have got a 32yo Darling who averaged one goal a game last year? Even "shell of a player" Roo had averaged that this year and he's 11 years younger! 🤣🤣🤣 Fans are already complaining about recent years trades. How do you think they'd take an old player getting one goal a game especially if also by next year he's too old and spends it in the reserves? 🙄

Fumbles, fumbles fumbles - was it the pressure, conditions or just pure bad skill?

All is never as bad as it seems.  We won the inside 50 count.  Is there any hope we can improve our conversion?

I thought Lever and Jefferson going off when we were already missing May really affected our ability to change things up. I’d loved to have seen Petty or TMac moved forward, Turner moved back and Viney played as a small forward in the second half. At the start of the last quarter I would have had Petracca, Oliver and Lindsay in the middle. Anyway injuries cruelled our ability to switch things up and I think we saw that Sharp and Woewodin are still VFL players. 

Another game lost at the selection panel. God knows how many games that is now in the last 3 years lost in this manner.

Must play 2 rucks against the best (Xerri, Witts, etc.). And as mentioned by @Doug Reemer why on earth is our first draft pick playing in the twos?

Some of the tripe being dished out in this thread. Wowee. It's round 2 people, go out for walk and calm down.

Echo the comments about our fitness. We couldn't run out quarters in round 1 and looked miles off it against an admittedly fair bit younger Roos side. As Goody said, we held up for 3 quarters and then the damn burst in the last. Binman, as our resident loading expert, is it panic stations in the S&C department or just still blowing out the cobwebs?

I think we got a glimpse of our future with Gawny being completely outmuscled and outplayed by Xerri. Time comes for us all, Gawny still one of the best I've ever seen pull on the guernsey, but was this a window of him 'moving into a different phase of his career' to quote the great Bill Simmons?

Last one - why does Jack Viney still have a licence to kick it inside 50?!? Surely everyone, including he, knows that he can't hit the side of a barn when he's on the move, so a) why haven't the coaches taken his licence away and he's only allowed to extract and hand it off and/or b) why aren't his teammates running right next to him for the hand off? For such an important player jeez he frustrates the [censored] out of me.

If you can’t see the club failed to capitalise on our only legitimate Premiership window in 60 years by not recruiting a ready made KF.

Then there’s no hope for you. 

The hallmark of that 2021-2023 team was we were always in the game because we would fight all the way to the end. Yesterday was alarming how we seemingly gave up against North of all teams in that last quarter. 
There’s still too much talent in this team for results like this, you have to question the hunger to dig deep when the backs are against the wall at the moment. That’s not fitness. That’s  being motivated, and inspired. 
A few more efforts like this and unfortunately for Goody, it’s not going to end well for him. It’s classic “Not playing for the coach” areas.

We made Darling look like a billionaire yesterday.

He was on the scrap heap at the end of last year banged up and we made him reappear like a leviathan.

It gets worse every time you think about it.
