Brackers or Brackets?

Bontempelli and also Butters to be out for up to 6 weeks.

At this rate Oliver Dempsey will win the Brownlow.

Yes these practice games are dangerous. Everything should be inhouse until Round One

SWYL, you've clearly made your mind up about this issue and have laboured the point on this site.

However, injuries can occur at any time, be that at training (McVee), during intraclub match sims (McAdam), practice matches/sims (AMW) or obviously during an actual game.

In such a physical sport, it's a risk that can't be avoided.  Keeping things inhouse won't mitigate that risk.

something something summer footy something DUMB

We'll be OK against Freo.  Autumn officially starts tomorrow!

Watching Giants v Blues. I don't take too much stock in practice games but liking the endeavour and mindset from Carlton. Looking better defensively. Silvagni down back makes sense. Young Lucas Camporeale looks like he belongs. Kemp filling on for Curnow up forwards looks alright.

I think McGovern rolled an ankle rather than pulling a hammy.

Roll on Round 1 against the Tigers, hopefully it will be a safari ...

I’d love to know the numbers now compared to 10-15 years ago. It feels like the additional matches and earlier start the AFL have put on the players is contributing to this..:

What’s interesting is Melbourne were at the forefront of training hard and often (Burgo)

Every other club is playing catch up. At the moment they are going down the ‘start earlier, start harder’ route across the board.

This mantra will mature and things will settle but for now, being match fit in February is not winning anyone a flag

crom the only team not to be suffering from a spate of injuries currently; burgess effect after two or three pre-seasons in charge

Games where Players are not going at 100% against an opponent are dangerous. That’s when a lot of injuries happen.
i am well aware nothing is bulletproof, but these televised games are a liability

Seems Gulden is the latest casualty…that ankle twist looked nasty

So, no inhouse match sims then?  Way to shoot your own argument in the foot.

No disrespect to AMW, but in terms of important players, McVee is the only one out injured for an extended period. Even then, Salem is back so can fill that gap.

Our other bonefide players are seemingly in great shape and raring to go. Injury luck goes a long way, so who knows, we seem to be a club who hasn’t suffered all too much all things considering.

Not at all, in a practice game you have no idea what the tactics of the opposition are.
Round 1 you know the opponent will be going at 100%

Bonts out for 6 weeks

Well I got that wrong then, didn’t I 😅

Seriously though, that’s a huge blow for the Dogs and I feel for Bont 🙁

Good players are starting to get injured. Poor bont missing 6 weeks, meanwhile of course no filth or essendon players get injured.

Massive blow. Love the Bont. Hopefully recovers quickly for them

It’s been carnage the last 2-3 weeks across the AFL… fingers crossed we can get through Sunday unscathed and get into the season with a strong first side!

Why are Sydney in black shorts? I get why they aren’t wearing red, but I wonder why not white.

No idea! Cados who is a big dees fan is calling for matching shorts/jumper colours for all strips. I agree with him, the white shorts aren’t really needed anymore for away strips as all clubs have clash jerseys.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

Salem proved to be a valuable contributor as a reliable and solid one-on-one medium-sized defender in what was undoubtedly his most impressive season since the premiership year. He remains a highly capable rebounding option for the Demons as he approaches his 200th game at the club.
