Inside midx3 for me too….why did we let Eliza West go?…..And another ruck for when Pearce gets injured, which happens every season.

Havana Harris. By far the popular choice for number 1 pick.  She’s prototype of the tall athletic player with the skills to come in straight away and be a star.

In true AFL tradition , she is already taken as a Gold Coast Suns academy member.  It’s a compromised draft across both AFL and AFLW.

note QAFLW is a strong competition including at junior level.  Plenty of good youngsters coming through for Lions and Suns AFLW teams.

Campbell did very well in that ruck role this year when Loz got injured.

I agree. I'd love to see her spend more time in the ruck this year.

For the draft, I skilled mid would be wonderful. I'd also love us to get a defender with strong hands who reads the play well - through draft or trade.

Campbell will be a star...

Is Tayla Harris likely to leave the Dees? I hope not!

I saw a report that I think Collingwood and Hawthorn were after her, but that we were still negotiating with her.

I'd be disappointed if she chose to leave, given I feel like we've really looked after her, especially after the debacle that was her exit from Carlton.

Guess it will depend on her motivation.

She seems pretty happy in our environment, but maybe there are other incentives.

Must sign Campbell and Gall long term.

They are the future IMO.

And Gillard.

I'm hoping it's a case of media muckraking yet again.  Remember it was only a year or so ago the media were adamant Paxy was going to seek a trade to Fremantle.

I'd be very unimpressed if Tayla decided to leave

I'm in two minds on this one. Start of this season I'd have wanted to keep her at pretty much all costs. But if she's keen to go, for adequate compensation and considering the gaps we've got to fill, if we drive a hard bargain...

As to what the sticking point is. Could be role? We intended to play her backline this season apparently and with the progress of the young talls, things may have shifted in a direction she doesn't like or maybe she wants security of a longer contract than we're willing to give. All speculation. At 27, with her stocks relatively high and plenty of teams looking for experience, it's wise to explore options.

But. Despite missing the season, she's still 10th on the all-time goalkickers. 1st for marks i50. 1st for contested marks. And she can cover forward, ruck and back positions. She's handy like that, assuming the shoulder is sorted now.

Mithen apparently weighing up a move to Gold Coast, with the Dees looking to move up the draft order.

You can see the logic from both sides. How much upside does she have left for us compared to a team like the Suns and compared to the quality apparently available in this draft. You wouldn't say that Lily's on the fringe of our best team quite yet, but in a few years? Would be sad to see an inaugural and much-loved premiership player go, of course.

Even Lily would admit her season wasn't a good one.  You would take this deal, good for both parties as I see her on the fringe next year.

At this stage in the development of AFLW, and the potential feeder competitions, I wonder about the draft pool, and particularly recruiters' detailed knowledge of those in it, that 'moving up the draft order' is as useful or as certain of outcome as in the men's draft?

Does anyone have any knowledge of how scouting is done in AFLW, and by whom in our case?

Bit going on at the Suns, with the coach sacked and the captain requesting a trade. Charlie Rowbottom also uncontracted through apparently likely to stay.

More names being thrown around with trade period starting on Thursday, nothing regarding the Dees aside from Harris and Mithen though.

Shes depth now. Great servant to our club but if the suns offer her a deal i think she should take it.

The intensity of scrutiny/resources must surely be far below what exists in the men's. But because of that, in some ways, moving up the draft in the W might be MORE worth it, since the depth of quality is shallower and presumably the players at the top are the most known quantities in the pool. Interesting to think that these draftees would have been 11 years old for season 1 - a big shift at a pivotal time in a young athlete's career.

We've rarely had much to work with in terms of high picks. But there's been creativity and effort in our recruiting outside the draft, which is still coming to fruition. List manager Todd Patterson was apparently in contact with Grace Beasley for six or seven YEARS while she was playing basketball (including overseas) prior to her signing for 2024.

But aside from the 2023 draft which is too early to judge, 2020 is really the only year we've had access to high picks since early in the comp. That year we got: Bannan (pick 5), McNamara (15), Caris (17, now at Geelong), Fitzsimon (35), Kendall (41), Simmons (48, played a few seasons at West Coast).

Looking at the other draftees that year, our decisions look as good as they ever do with the benefit of hindsight.

This could be a win for everyone.  I've felt Lil has had the game go past her for a couple of seasons now, but she's such a club person, foundation player, best mates with the captain (as I understand it), that tapping her on the shoulder at 26 and telling her she needs to look elsewhere could be problematic.  But if she gets a decent offer from another club that she's happy with, and takes it, much awkwardness and potential unpleasantness could be avoided.

Todd Patterson's our head of recruiting in AFLW and has done a pretty good job.

This year's crop is viewed as something of a super draft, a lot of talented players in that first 10 and this year will be the first truly national draft, so can draft players regardless of state (no nominating which state you want to be drafted to).

I can see why we'd want to load up on picks.  If we could nab pick 2 from GC, Zippy Fish or India Rasheed would be incredibly good gets (Ash Centra expected to be selected by Collingwood @ 1).

Mithen has to go. Tell her she's not wanted. Pick 2 is a no brainer. Mithen has been ordinary for 2 years now time to go , I'll pack her bags. She always be known as a premiership player but reality says she's no longer in our best 21.

But worth moving up for!

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
