What I don't understand is if there are supposedly 2 quality cat B's. Why wouldn't we promote Moniz-Wakefield instead of using pick 83 so we could take both Mentha and Andrew as Cat B's.

I may be wrong, but I thought that because we overlooked Andrew last year we can’t add him as a Cat B rookie this year. In any case, I think we can upgrade AMW to the Cat A list if required.

Hey @Pennant St Dee, what's Aiden Riddle like out of curiosity (shot in the dark)? Have you come across him much in your travels? Cheers

Yes I know Riddler quite well, actually spoke to him on Friday night, absolute ripper of a kid genuinely nice person who is very coachable and still learning the forward craft to be more of a fwd ruck then the other way around. Has very nice soft hands at the tap, good at ground level and with his second efforts. One thing I would love to see improve is a bit more hardness

I’d like to see the Dees pickup a youngster with the “last draft pick”.   We should have the place on the list available.   There is talent all the way through even in the 4th round/ late 60s.  Definitely like to give JT a stretch assignment and roll the dice …

It doesn't matter if it is pick 79 or 83.

Then there will be a couple of rookie draft picks which are taken after this..... we will be selecting at the absolute dregs end of the draft.

We only have 2 decent picks, no way to build for the future.

Judd, JVR, Windsor, Jeffo, Turner, Bowey, Tholstrup, Rivers, Pickett, pick 5, pick 9. So there’s no future there?

That list also doesn’t include some players who are slightly older in Petty, Sparrow and Chandler.

It's actually pick 79 this is significant

Can anyone work out what that will come into? Brisbane have 6 picks, so that gives 4 spots into 75.

Two elite picks*

Very different from two ‘decent’ picks

6 Brisbane for 2 picks. +4

3 Gold Coast for 1 pick. +2

7 Essendon picks. Not sure what they'll do with them but assume at least 2 go for Kako. +1.

5 Carlton picks post 38 that probably go on 3 players. +2 there

St Kilda have some pick shuffling to do to get in position to match their academy players

No doubt a few clubs pass and go with rookies/train on instead once it gets right to the back.

Probably ends up around 60-70. Cal says somewhere between 63-72 picks and ours will be somewhere between the 5th and 10th last.

Am I right in saying after all the picks are used for FS and academy players it is likely to be inside 60?

I’m guessing somewhere between 60-70

Then there may be clubs that pass in the 60s as well.

Well looks like we won't be using this pick after all...

Yes we are. That was known.

Main list still at 33 with 3 spots.

Our 6 man A Rookie list is full, hence Melk getting re-promoted: Hore, AMW, Sestan, Verrall, Brown, Kentfield.

Cat B Rookie list is empty.

I'm not up to date on list spots, would both Melksham & McVee being upgraded to the senior list rule out splitting pick 9?

Pretty sure in the list contract thread this was accounted for and we still had 3 list spots.

That's good. As great as picks 5 & 9 are we need to leave room for a throw at the stumps.

Dazzle, I believe we can use draft picks from rounds 6 to 10 (which will come in to the 65-75 range) to promote them.  (pick 79 is round 5)

Edit:  Our picks in rnd 6 and 7 aren't listed in Cal's chart and I'm guessing we have flagged to the AFL we will use them to promote McVee and Melksham so no longer available at the draft.

Right no worries, makes sense now.

We have:

3 - Senior spots after promoting McVee and Melksham

1 - A-Rookie spot.  AMW is still a B-Rookie as has played less than 10 games.  See below.

1 - B Rookie spot

From the Contracts thread.

The rules changed to allow players to stay Rookies for 5 years if they have played less than 10 career games.

It makes no difference to AMW to remain a B-Rookie but it gives the club the chance to recruit an A-Rookie where the recruitment rules are less strict than for B-Rookies.

AMW remains a B-Rookie which leaves 1 A-Rookie and 1 B-Rookie spot.

The Age seemed to think he had to slide across to the Cat A list. Not sure the AFL ever publicly clarified if players can stay as Cat B rookies for longer than 3 years. The 5 years might be for the overall rookie list.

Either way, we'll have 3 main list spots.

Judd McVee will be upgraded to the primary list, and Andy Moniz-Wakefield can no longer be a category B rookie.

The Age have it wrong!

Edit:

Rookies – time on list

The AFL will introduce a trigger for an additional fourth year on the Rookie List where the Rookie has played less than ten career AFL matches, which will then apply in same way for access to an additional fifth year.  Total aggregate years on the Rookie List will be capped at five years (5.5 years for Mid-Season Rookie Draft).

In other words we'll get 5 new players through the draft/Rookie selections..?

  • PREVIEW: Geelong

"It's officially time for some alarm bells. I'm concerned about the lack of impact from their best players." This comment about one of the teams contesting this Friday night’s game came earlier in the week from a so-called expert radio commentator by the name of Kane Cornes. He wasn’t referring to the Melbourne Football Club but rather, this week’s home side, Geelong. The Cats are purring along with 1 win and 2 defeats and a percentage of 126.2 (courtesy of a big win at GMHBA Stadium in Round 1 vs Fremantle) which is one win more than Melbourne and double the percentage so I guess that, in the case of the Demons, its not just alarm bells, but distress signals. But don’t rely on me. Listen to Cornes who said this week about Melbourne:- “They can’t run. If you can’t run at speed and get out of the contest then you’re in trouble.

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit.
Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.
