Thought Goodwin's press conference today was simply outstanding.  Eloquent, precise, informative and measured.  Put to bed any of the media nonsense in a no frills manner. Petracca and Oliver staying. What a surprise! Outlined that all footy clubs have their frustrations, debates and times of angst. It's called human nature. This is not true only in the AFL but all footy clubs in this country. Our mate Tom Morris was back pedalling at a rate of knots and was noticeably quieter throughout proceedings. For those who believed a word this 'person' said well, it's just embarrassing.  Finally, the revelations re Clarry were stark. We find now he has been playing with a busted hand, knee and a cracked rib. What an awesome effort from a guy who many said would never play for the club again. To all those people in the media and those on this site who mercilessly got stuck into Oliver hang your collective heads in shame. He is a champion of the club and one of the all time greats in the history of the game. He will be back bigger and better than ever. Once again well done Simon.✔️

Funny how we see it differently. Looks nervous and could hear it in his voice. Petracca and Oliver are contracted, of course the club would say this. Both have made comments within 12 months though. Still silence from Petracca. Looked just the usual spin to me.

We watched a difference press conference.  I think you had your volume turned down.

Simon has always had the ability to say a lot of words that sound good whilst saying absolutely nothing. I would be reading nothing into anything Goodwin/Richardson/Pert says until Petracca/Oliver/Viney are lining up for us in Round 1 next year playing good football.

💯 agree, it was incredibly positive in light of the stuff going on. 

I thought it was hands down his best press conference since he has been at the club and exactly the type of leadership i wish we would see at times from pert and Richardson who are silent far too often when things are going wrong.

Would like to have a sizeable wager on Oliver and Petracca lining up in round one next year? Barring unforeseen injury there is a greater likelihood of that happening than the sun coming up in the morning!

Some will say I have my head in the sand, but the actual (an ongoing) surprise to me when observing threads here and elsewhere, is that people still allow themselves to get into such a lather over what the usual suspects in the media say.  

All you need to do is pay attention to who they are, any agendas they might have, what they get out of going with their 'scoop' and what they are actually saying. In most cases they say absolutely nothing worth paying attention to and their story is rarely anything more than a manufactured gossip column or opinion piece presented as fact.

Sending Trac back on against the Pies was dangerous and reckless at best. The players are typically brave beyond belief. I also think it rarely helps in game! This will be major reason he is [censored] at the club, he will have got medical advice on what a huge risk he took!

Looking at how Carlton’s season has fallen apart, can’t help but wonder if sending Weitering and McKay back on in games when likely concussed, has impacted their teams collapse!

Looking after the players our greatest asset from a clubs standpoint and for their individual health should be paramount. Fully understanding players carry injuries, but the type of injury needs to be taken into account!

I was very critical about the club allowing Trac back on the field after his injury. I still am not thrilled about it.

But let's look at what happened with Trac post injury. He went back on, struggled, was taken off and sent to hospital before the game was over. He was in an ED for 6 hours, had multiple scans and saw 3 doctors (according to him) before he was correctly diagnosed with a high grade spleen laceration.

3 separate doctors got it wrong, doctors who had access to medical imaging, blood tests, monitors and so on.

While I don't disagree that we never should have let him back on, I also don't think that it was done with any sort of malice, nor do I think anyone at the club even suspected he had serious internal injuries. 

Steven May was never sent back on with his rib injuries, likely because he communicated better than Trac about how he was feeling and it was suspected that he had internal injuries. Without imaging, no doctor can correctly diagnose internal bleeding/injuries.

I have no doubt that Trac being Trac, he said he was ok and that he wanted to go back on. Our medical team, in hindsight, should have said absolutely not, but given they could only go off what he was telling them, it's not impossible to understand why he was allowed to play on.

Trac is clearly and rightly traumatized. When you go thru any type of trauma, you usually look for someone to blame. If he needs to blame the club to feel better, then so be it. I am sure with time, the trauma will ease and bridges will mend.

I have absolutely no idea how you reached this conclusion. You must not watch his other press conferences.

Go watch any of the ones he's done in the aftermath of one of the press hit jobs, and you'll see him when he's unsure and uncomfortable.

I've just watched today's and I agree with the OP's general sentiment. He was proud to stand up for his players. He was open and honest about ANB and Clarry. He correctly identified Trac's concerns as being a positive - clubs need to have a strong enough culture where the players can feel empowered and able to raise concerns. He even had a wry smile at the point where he was about to say the phrase "contest and defence", knowing that Kane Cornes has been insulting him all week for those words (and he correctly said that he is constantly on the record as saying we need to be good in all three phases, the third being offence, and that we're not good enough at punishing turnovers).

This was as good a press conference as I recall seeing from him, and about bang on what you'd want to see and hear from him after the last 48 hours.

Love how honest he is on the details about Nibs requesting a trade. And his praise of Nibs is heartwarming and sincere.

Anyone who still thinks Nibs requesting a trade has something to do with a reason other than him wanting to be near family simply can’t be helped since they clearly won’t listen.

I’m eight days-ish away from being a grandmother. Just this morning a friend said that with some couples, once the baby’s born a grandmother just five minutes away is a blessing, for some it’s imperative. My Polish counterpart (my granddaughter’s Babcia) lives literally three minutes away from the parents-to-be. I totally get why Nibs and Georgie need to be near Nana Shaz.

Exactly this. This is been forgotten in the rush to sensationalise. It was clearly not easy to diagnose. Young people compensate well when they have significant injuries/blood loss so it can sometimes be difficult diagnose the severity of the injury immediately (I am a doctor). The level of criticism at the club over the injury has been unfair and disproportionate to the errors. Having said that, they should have immediately been suspecting spleen injury due to the location of the impact and could definitely been more cautious in their management of him. But they were no worse in their management than the hospital docs.

It’s imperative. 
We didn’t have it for a long while (1800km away, now an hour).

It makes things very hard depending on your situation.

And who the [censored] is anyone else to judge what support parents do or don't need.

If Alex and Georgie need to be like 5 minutes away from family, it is their right and absolutely nobody should say "oh but I didn't need that, or I didn't have that". Good for you, maybe your baby wasn't a screaming pile of snot. Lucky you.

I know people who parent without any family support, and I know people who would fall apart if their parents were not around to help them almost daily. All of them are wonderful parents.

It is a major challenge for all clubs. 

I mean I can name at least 3 incidents this year outside of Trac's one, where duty of care by other clubs was negligent, including where the injuries were very clearly head injuries!

I hope like you that we seriously review our entire philosophy around physical 'resilience'. There is a lot of improvement in that space for me.

We still have an opportunity to have another crack at a flag with Gawn, Petracca, Oliver, Viney and May.

Supported by some emerging players of which a few could become elite such as as Pickett, Roo, Rivers, McVee, Windsor.

There are some concerns over some off-field behaviour, our injury management, and the trading in of players from other clubs.

If the club can go to work on these issues we can win a flag in 2025.  What we need now is leaders driving this.  This sounds like a start.

Not just the coach but also the club. Sounds to me like your giving the likes of Tom Morris more kudos than the aforementioned.  I think I have a modicum of intelligence to look at something for what it is. Goodwin was emphatic about Petracca and Oliver. Case closed.

- Sydney players were fighting over a girl

- Tyson Stengle had to be removed by an ambulance from a nightclub

- 6 weeks ago Bevo was getting sacked

- Collingwood is again being accused of racism

Football clubs are made of a diverse bunch of highly competitive, egocentric, often not super intelligent players. They don't and will never all see eye to eye, share the same passions for reading the bible and knitting, or agree about everything. 

Is our culture perfect? Obviously not. 

Is any club's culture perfect? Obviously not.

Are we getting air time because it's easy to pick on an underperforming club? Absolutely
