Season 2024 Over for Clayton Oliver

Clarry has put in a HUGE amount of work and has categorically bought into the club. His commitment to change, self-improvement and betterment is absolutely genuine.

Clarry has had a huge amount of resources expended on him, which has been seen as a mutual commitment from both club and player alike.

I can understand that players are regularly discussed, but I really hope this hasn’t (doesn’t) damage the relationship and trust that has improved tenfold, between Oliver and the club.

It would take something monumental to undo what both Clarrie and the club have established in terms of a common goal. Like, something of biblical proportions.

Clarrie is eternally grateful for all the hard work and resources afforded him by the club, likewise the club is grateful that Clarrie is giving it everything he’s got and that he is ‘extremely loyal’ to use Goody’s own words.

So yeah, maybe another club has asked the question, maybe several have. But imho Clarrie is staying put at a club that he acknowledges has done so much for him and that has great belief in him.

Let's use our brains. To GET him a club would have to offer at least two low first-rounders and take over all his salary. Who is going to do that at this stage of his career? On the other hand, we have invested a great deal of effort into helping a player who has been one of the top 5 or so players EVER to play for Melbourne, and who is now totally committed to repaying the club for that.

It won't happen. And if WCW is right and players read this garbage, that would be a terrible thing for his mental health and recovery.

To be fair, we’ve shown that we’re prepared to move players on even when they’re ’high profile’, if we did trade Oliver I don’t think it would be extremely surprising (i.e., Watts, Hogan, Grundy).

Regarding the second point, what has been posted isn’t disparaging; and let’s not use a sliding scope argument in an effort to dictate behaviour. I’m not suggesting the forum should turn into an unmitigated free-for-all, but this is so far from something that needs to be curtailed or censored.

3 very different scenarios but I take your point

Also none of the 3 you mentioned achieved even a smidge of what Clarry has in red and blue.

How does Clarry feel about this? I doubt he would want to leave.
Two first rounders seems well under unless they’re firmly within the top 10.

If we trade Clarry we are admitting that we are rebuilding. Window will be firmly shut.

I think we are in rebuilding phase. I would seriously look at a good offer.

Don’t disagree with your points at all. Was more just high-lighting that at the trade table we’ve historically been prepared to make some very big calls (granted, I agree that all three were for very different reasons though and with varying returns).

Also clarifying my comments around it be not all surprising we’re in reference to the disposition of us, as a club, at the trade table - not an expectation it will occur.

If the club thought that, then why chase Houston? Why not trade Viney?

You might think we are in a rebuild phase, but I don’t think the club agrees. Besides Oliver just turned 27, he’s not exactly hitting retirement. He easily has 6 great years left in him if he gets himself back to fitness.

It’s true… some players DO read DL. I don’t know why some people refuse to believe that (not you, Ollie fan). It’s a Demons forum and it’s a well-respected and respectable Demons forum, therefore what’s so unbelievable about players reading it?

FWIW I do believe it and, with all that's happened,  why some here want to post totally unsubstantiated rumours beggars belief. Nothing good can from it .

It would be the biggest mistake to trade Clarry in order to appease Trac, when we all know Trac won’t stop looking for a “brand management” move.

If we trade Clarry it’s because we have decided our window is shut and we are trying to capitalize on the high value players we have. Or because something amazing has fallen into our lap and we need the picks to make it happen.

Imagine that, trade Clarry and Trac wants out in 12 months 🤯

I think Trac will continue to explore his options no matter what we do as a club.
Regardless, you do not let players make list management decisions for you.

Maybe because it's no coincidence that soon as Petracca has raised issues with the club we now find ourselves that Clarry may be on the trade table..

If the right offer is there then do the trade.

If Trac had a Clarry issue, it wasn't with Clarry himself. It was with the club for how it handled that situation.

Spending all year getting Clarry into what is, from all reports, the best off-field place he's been in years, only to then summarily trade him would be a really strange move. I know some will say "but it's two first round draft picks", but even then, after everything we've been through, if we then say "thanks Clarry but we don't actually care about you that much" I think that undoes so much of what we've tried to achieve this year as to be a bad decision.

Hmmm … I’d rather a fit and firing Oliver over Trac tbh.

If Oliver has done enough to prove his turned a new page, vs Tracs alleged rogue antics. Oliver everyday of the week.

I'm with you @Sir Windsor.

If Trac wants to leave - at 28yo and coming off a major injury - trade for the right price. That's business.

If Oliver wants to stay - as a vulnerable person who seems to be getting his life back on track - keep if he's committed and capable. Trading wouldn't be business it would be an erosion of trust between the playing group and the football department.

I strongly doubt it happens.

Are there no other clubs that can hit the news re trades/non trades? Are we the only club?

Clarry is not going anywhere. And those willing to sell him down the river for a couple of speculative 1st round picks - I will look out for your supportive comments when he's tearing up the midfield again, like his normal self after a big preseason. Poor guy - building up to be, if not already, in the conversation as one of our best EVER. He has 1 average year (average, not 'bad' - just 'bad' to some according to his ridiculously lofty standards) and suddenly he's expendable. For unknowns.

I've read, and it seems to be the case, that he's an emotional guy. I think it would mean a lot to him that we have his back, and don't just want to give him the old heave-ho for a bag of beans.

Ridiculous!!!

But it’s clearly not totally unsubstantiated. @goodwindees has a pretty impeccable track record with his mail.

Getting the inside word on what’s happening within the four walls of the footy club is a big reason for a lot of people being on this site and the actual thing that beggars belief is why on earth anyone would want to censor that, or abuse anyone who’s providing that. Genuinely cannot for the life of me understand it.

If you don’t like it then ignore it, like people do with a bunch of other topics and posts.

He is a superstar and one of our all time greats. As you say one average season. Two first round picks ? Give me a spell. 4 b&f's and could have had a couple of Brownlows if it wasn't for Trac and vice versa. In rotating order people have wanted Petracca,Oliver and Viney all gone. Guess what they're sll staying. Don't need a 'source'. Just know. I said put plenty on it a few weeks ago and nothing has changed.  Wanting Clarry gone is downright embarrassing.

Let's hope players like Clarry don't read this drivel. Even if this were true not sure of the motivation of a 'supporter' who would post this at this time.

I just want to be clear, were you the poster that questioned whether @Jaded No More was a Collingwood plant or not a real Melbourne ‘supporter’?

Can you please confirm if that was you or not?

Can’t remember and if I’m wrong I apologise.

From memory he said we were interested in Will Hayward. Not that we’d definitely land him. Do you know how many players clubs show interest in that don’t end up getting done?!

As previously stated, if you don’t like it then don’t read it. It’s like that famous Ricky Gervais stand up line about guitar lessons - if you don’t like it then move on! Why on earth would you try to censor something that other people appreciate and doesn’t adversely affect you?

No need to apologise.  If I said it I'd readily admit it but I didn't. Said some other stuff but not that. Cheers.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
