IMO the best thing out of last night was the performance of Petty and Turner.

Both ventured high and impacted. Good to see Turner taking a few marks and getting hands on a few ground balls.

If Jeffo comes in and becomes a regular then Turner may go back if required.

According to Nathan Brown Kolt is rated very high internally. Give him a pre season or 2 and he should be really good.

Like to see more of Riv and McVee in the mid.

People aren't falling over themselves to feel good about a 2 point loss because we did it in the most suffocatingly boring way possible. 100 points scored total on a beautiful night for footy. The only way we can get near a win against good opposition is to strangle teams. We're 13th in round 21, when the club was going full boar for a flag this year. Actually it was 6 who have played less than 50 games and 4 who have played less than 20

Possible, but unlikely. Saints got Tigers, Cats and Blues to play and 2 games behind us. Probably beat Tigers, not sure about others.

We might still beat Suns and Pies with our remaining games and would have to lose both and Saints to win 2 out 3 with a few percent to gain too to pass us.

Isn't there also the matter of Lombard and Ashcroft that could shunt us further back? To add insult to injury if we likely finish higher than StKilda there is the Josh Battle compo  to be concerned about. Nevertheless a top 10 is huge!

I was disappointed that we didn’t get to the game last night as I felt that we had a chance for some salvation. Still we watched the game on Ch7 and what a pile on that was even Jonesy piled on us at every mistake and opportunity. I thought that Max was BOG, Kozzie had an excellent game, very dangerous and the umps refused to pay him a free even when bought down by a high tackle. Overall I felt like it was a good team effort with an even spread of players but just lacking the experience, class and polish to make the most of our opportunities. As mentioned previously Jack Billings and The Kolt could have made heroes of themselves but lacked the composure to put Port away. Another lost opportunity but when we bring the heat we are very hard to beat, next two weeks will be very interesting.

Rivers and Pickett obviously stars, but they'll be in year six next year and can't really be considered young guns in the build.

Tholstrup has a huge amount of work to do. In my eyes, he has no obvious strengths at AFL level. He had some form in the VFL where he'd win clearances and kick goals on the run, but he's showed neither of those at AFL level yet. Not pencilling him in by any means but obviously hope he comes good.

Woey could maybe be a player long term. Good endurance runner, brave and actually has an eye for goal on the run. Again, lots would have to go right because he isn't taking his chances just now.

Jeffo - who knows. Much better back half of the year for Casey and should be playing AFL this weekend.

Brown - great tackler. The coaches don't have much faith, but I'd love to see more.

Howes looked good early in the year, but has looked lost at sea since he was dropped after the Eagles game whenever he's come in. Don't think he's a defender, but don't know where else he'd shine either. I've been a fan, but am concerned.

Think you’re harsh on Bowser, I reckon he was set for a big year before a really nasty injury. The kicking will bounce back if we get a midfield that can run and provide options.

Moniz is a great package of traits but has no idea what he’s doing and no tank, has to get through a preseason this summer or it won’t end well.

Depth utility/wing is probably the best we’ll get from Woey.

Howes could be something but he’s just soft and doesn’t demand the ball either. His good form at Casey last year saw he really keen to get the footy but apart from Langdon and few others this team doesn’t believe in running and demanding the pill.

Not sure what you’re not seeing with Kolt, super work rate for a young player in the hardest spot on the ground. Does a lot of smart things with things like tap ons. Makes mistakes but generally that’s because he’s trying to be composed and follow instructions. Is he a high end talent, no. But with his frame and enough juice in the legs he’ll do more with the ball as time goes on.

To me Chandler is that sort of player,realistically he is only playing his 2nd full year, so there is a lot of upside. He is our leading tackler in the FWD line , so has closing speed ( ANB type !!)

 

And they finally gave Chandler a run up the ground last night and he looked perfectly competent as a 3rd winger in spot minutes.

If we can use all our half forwards: Chandler, Kolt, Fritsch, Pickett, ANB on the wing or on ball we can then put wingers like Langdon and Windsor forward for a change of pace and different look. Or throw Windsor on ball.

Langdon at half forward really helped stretch teams vertically rather than just horizontally.

Off the top of my head, the dogs, Brissy at the gabba, west coast this year. Won us the Anzac Eve game last year, dominated Sydney early last year as well. So yeah, he’s capable

Apart from the diabolical sub decision (can’t wait for this rule to be scrapped for Goodwins sake) this was a good coaching display. 
 

We denied the corridor and nearly pulled off an epic win with plenty of VFL standard players running around.

Exactly. Ask my dog how disappointed I am. He hides in another room as he thinks I am shouting at him. No point posting about every mistake on here though.

We are still a good club that has fallen short this year. Next year we will be fine.

He needs a big off season to improve his fitness because I think we see glimpse of what he was able to produce in the first half with some of his contested marking but when we needed someone to stand up in the last quarter to take a mark or two he was invincible. 

Like all young players these are good experiences for them to take into the pre season and really work hard on the deficiencies. 

So Dazz, would you play Jeffo next week and if so, in place of who?

Great take and my thoughts exactly. Choosing not to post non stop calling players spuds etc does not mean we accept mediocrity.

Agreed . According to some on here we did a million things wrong, half the team are spuds with a terrible game plan.  Quite incredulous to think that we lost by a kick to arguably the premiership favourites who were missing few. Can you imagine if we got all the aforementioned right? Wow! I for one was rapt with the performance.  The endeavour, desire and aggression were first class.

If ya don't like the game day thread, stay outta the game day thread.
Some go negative, some don't.
Me ... I prefer to leave the players out've it as you can't usually fault their endeavour and save my frustration for Goodwin and his game plan as it doesn't give me any great enjoyment.
Bores me to forken tears, win, lose or draw.

The club owes it to its members to drive a high standard. It doesn't owe anyone wins, sure, but it certainly owes it to those (like myself, and many others here) who pay a lot of money every year to support the team to ensure that everything is being done to prime us for success. Keeping the same forward coach and giving him three seasons to fix a problem that gets worse year on year? That's not ROI for members, and we have every right to demand that errors like that are rectified.

JVR was quiet in the first, was sighted slightly more in the 2nd, and then pretty much nothing after that. Subbing him or Kolt were my preferred options.

I love JVR, but he had a poor night. He took two marks in the second, otherwise no marks for the night. Statistically, Turner wasn't much better after half time, but we couldn't sub both of them. Turner played second ruck. 

Turner had some burst about him for the night and JVR looked tired the entire game to me.

Wanted to give some kudos to Petty. Thought his tackling was really good, took some great marks. Well done, Petts.

The effort was very good from the majority of the players, but the execution of basic skills and the decision making was woeful from all other than Pickett. It's a very sad state of affairs when a side that has been top 4 for three years running has to resort to under 8s level congestion to keep themselves competitive.

I'm not surprised at reports that players are unhappy and considering their options when we play like this. It is a horrible brand of football to watch and horrible to play. Ultimately it is not a game plan that can be played successfully for four quarters week after week, which is why we've put in some horribly uncompetitive performances this year. 

Goodwin will receive credit from some happy clappers for keeping us competitive this week, but he is doing massive damage to our brand by having us play in a manner than nobody wants to watch, even our "supporters". Don't complain when we have the bare minimum of marquee matches and FTA coverage next year. 

He also deserves significant criticism for his handling of Oliver and other injured players this year. When you have different rules for some favoured types, and allow certain players to dictate terms, you breed all sort of resentment and unhappiness. Oliver was an absolute liability last night and has been for weeks. He needs to be "managed" for the remainder of the season. Ditto his mates Lever and Melksham.

I know Van Rooyen had a poor night, but his substitution in the last night forced Gawn to ruck the entire last quarter solo. The poor guy could barely stand in the last ten minutes he was so tired from carrying the team all year. It was an awful decision, made worse by the fact that his replacement contributed nothing.
