Are we still talking about this? It's Tuesday night and I'm giving plasma, that was Saturday's issue.

    Life is more complicated than this. Sometimes you can't make it for all sorts of reasons or you don't live in the country or the state.

    The problem I have is probably with the 5-10k or so that would normally attend that game in the past 3-4 years.

    They are the bandwagon supporters that give most of us a bad name.

    I was embarrassed by the crowd the other night and have copped it this week from mates that support Carlton and Essendon. 

    We have a really good conversion of supporters to attendees and members, but like all clubs, we have some softies.

    Seriously mate....who made you [censored] judge and jury..  It's just footy.  Life is a bit larger. Any of a myriad reasons folk may or might not attend.

    Be accepting . It's great you go..  Others have and haven't . Unless you've ever sat in the artic conditions of waverley... go easy on the 'soft' .

    We all do what we do for reasons often only relevant to the supporter.

    By all means encourage attending  but don't shame others. Good way to [censored] good people off.

    It's a joke and I'm surprised how many people fobbed it off early in the thread with the attitude of 'I don't need to be there for the team to play well', I don't think crowds have a direct impact on performance but it's not about that. It's about sustaining the club and helping it stay healthy off the field for years to come. It was only 10 years ago when we were on our knees and hemorrhaging money like no-one' business the short memory of some people is incredible.

    To the people don't give a rip about the embarrassing crowd on Sat night who also complain about still playing in Alice Springs, never getting a good fixture with prime time slots and always Sunday 4:40, having home games at Marvel in the past etc there is no such thing as a free lunch so either get on board or be happy with the above.

    Don't worry. I shared the video of the Essendon supporters slagging off their team to the Essendon ones and the Carlton ones were told they got 30k to the same game, but have 40k more members.

    What don't I think is relevant?

    I think life is complex and football isn't everyone's priority.

    But if you're the sort of supporter that goes in the good times and then jumps off when the going gets a bit tough, I don't have a lot of sympathy and I don't really care if I hurt your feelings.

    I like the MFC supporters base.

    Rarely Boo inappropriately, they have a good feel for the game, applaud great play from either team, knowledgeable of the rules, don't make ridiculous calls to the umpires, humble, happy, and many more virtues.

    Would not want to be a supporter of Woods, Blues, Bombs, or Coasters. I don't know enough about the SA teams fans.

    If getting big crowds turns us into similar packs of narcissistic fanatics it would diminish my joy of the game.

     Our suupport isn't perfect, though it's qualities are much better than many.

    We are the type supporters base I like belonging to.

    I like it that Melbourne supporters have lives outside football. Makes us one of the more sensible clubs; or rather, the least mad clubs.

    I have supported the Dees since I was a kid and  a Trident member for the past 18 years. I have attended games in Darwin, Alice, Canberra and Sydney.

    Whether I attend a particular game or not is dependent on a myriad of personal reasons 

    I imagine our 60k plus members and however many supporters also do so for their own reasons. 

    The generalised put down of those who chose ( for their own reasons) not to attend the game is arrogant and sanctimonious piffle

    Moralising about football attendance is absurd. There are endless reasons why supporters may or may not attend games and who are we to judge others we don't know. 

    Media potshots regarding MFC game day attendance is an annual event that plays to a stereotype that is unsupported by the statistics. Ignore.  

    Any ire from the low attendance should be directed at the AFL's scheduling.

    I don’t judge folks for not attending matches for any reason… bar this *one.

    When we’re not going well is the time the players need us there the most. If you can attend a match, any match, but don’t because you’re confident of a loss I won’t just judge, I’ll go all Chief Justice of the High Court on your @rse.

    * I lied. There’s a second judge-worthy reason… people who can go to H&A matches but choose not to, but will move mountains to attend finals.

    You should have posted this on Day 1 of the thread and saved a lot of angst.

    Surfing is how poor gws is and what a bleak future their players have missing out on playing regularly at the G.

    I'm seriously sympathetic to those players and amazed more haven't left

    Yep, that's the essence of what I've tried to articulate a few times and people get triggered.

    That Essendon 2016 team had 34 banned players and still beat us don't forget.

    We got 8K against GWS at Marvel in 2015.

    Every team has bad crowds, Collingwood drew 20K against Freo in 2016 on a cold saturday night. Does not mean we can ignore how bad last Saturday was and can worry about how bad Saturday against Port could be if we get rolled by the dogs.

    Waverly was a challenge.

    I'm surprised at the numbers they actually got at times .

    What a terrible location and design.

    Perfect for the Dees supporters snowmobiles as the car park mud was a nightmare.

    Essendon have Dockers, Suns and Swans at home the next three weeks. Could be interesting to see how their crowds go now that they've been out of the top 4 for two whole weeks. I

    It might hold up this weekend given they still have everything on the line, but a loss to the Dockers and their season is kaput. Essendon fans really don't turn up when it gets tough - their 2022 crowds included;

    30k v Lions early in the season, then

    25k v Crows

    24k v Dockers

    23k vs Suns

    20k vs Port

    All points taken, and I was aware that Essendon had a VfL side running around in the AFL that year.

    And I agree with your last point that the crowd was a disgrace last Saturday night. Too many physically abled people probably preferred the lounge room fire and a glass of red as opposed to seeing their boys live at the G which is the best part of AFL footy.

    The AFLs weekly crowd numbers are absolutely insane, and a symptom of a culture and history built around Victorians going to the footy. 

    13k or whatever it was would be the envy of plenty of sporting codes across the globe

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos.     • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
