I would love Kako to not receive a bid before our pick 9

That would mean they didn’t need to trade away pick 9

Kinda like pies trading away pick 2 in anticipation of an early Daicos bid. They could have had Callaghan as well as Daicos.

The thought of that is a team would’ve bid on Kako if Essendon kept pick 9 but now because they traded it, teams don’t see the need. That’s the funny buggers teams usually play. Luckily this time it went to our advantage. We did have genuine interest in him though, it was just scuppered when they opened up the nga rules halfway through the season 🙄

This sounds good but it’s not reality. A bid would’ve come for Daicos if Collingwood had kept their pick. Just like if Brisbane had an early pick tonight someone would’ve bid on Ashcroft earlier to make them pay up.

Sounds funny and all, but once those picks get traded in anticipation of matching with later picks, teams aren’t as fussed to bid.

You could be right but Cal T had him at 14 on his form guide

If not NGA involved, I'm not sure Kako would go top 10

So I will laugh at the bombers  ;-)

Long-term, it means they don't weaken their draft hand for next year, but rather enhance it.
Kako is essentially a first round pick this year, however if he wasn't bid on before pick 9, they'd only have 31 and 54, therefore taking their first pick next year into deficit.
This way, they still get three first-round picks, albeit a slightly lesser one this year, plus a couple of picks in the 40's this year, as opposed to 2 picks in the 70's.

It makes some sense, but next year you can trade out 2 years in the future. If MFC keep trading out future firsts, there's literally no downside for us.

So while looking at it like this it seems a 'win-win', I'd much prefer to be in our position.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, @DubDee, I'll also be laughing at Essendon

I get all that, but the value of pick 9 in this draft is a lot to give away

Late bolter for pick 67 is Blangus Blayshaw, in case the AFL medical people ask, absolutely no relation to Gus.

One phantom draft with two updates is three phantom drafts by my reckoning.

Tomato, Tomatoe.

And I didn't say twomey wasn't accurate - well at least in terms of the top 10.

But if he is correct the hundred other phantom drafts with different selections are, by definition, wrong.

Put me firmly in the camp that says Lindsay will struggle at AFL level.

His kicking is only good in space, and despite being touted in/out he's anything but - his contest work is poor and he's unnatural in contested situations.

Wouldn't touch with pick 20 let alone 9.

Might make an ok half back but never a mid.

I agree, his highlights don’t suggest he can do great work in close unless he’s got room to move.

When he has space, his kicking is beautiful. That won’t happen as often at AFL level

Riley Bice got picked by Sydney

I am guessing a few of the others will get picked up in the rookie draft tomorrow if they are lucky enough?

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
