I agree. Yes he's looked good in patches, but is he going to be good at enough going head to head against other gun midfield groups? I'll be rapt if he is, but it's still touch and go I think.

What would be the reasons he can’t play predominately as a midfielder?

He received Brownlow and coaches votes this year in games in the midfield.

He has size, pace, power, defensive awareness and can kick.

We need new options in the midfield and he’s the most obvious choice for mine.

Bigger issue is that Tauru isn't a half back flanker.  He reminds me a bit of Jared Rivers back in the day.

The difference is that Rivers was as slow as a wet week, whilst Tauru is very much not. This gives Tauru the versatility that Rivers never had because Rivers could be exposed defensively when he didn't have a good matchup.

With Tauru you'd be investing in the athleticism and natural traits, and then letting him develop over time into whatever the best version of him there is. He appears to be a late developer so there will be a range of potential outcomes for him, even if his worst case is as a serviceable and versatile key defender.

Rivers the half back flanker is overrated on demonland

Rivers the future goal kicker mid, gets underrated however

Go figure!

Hearing murmurs of Tauru to Richmond at pick 1...

Every Carlton fan i've spoken to is absolutely convinced they're going to take Sid Draper at pick 3 regardless of who else is available, it may be media hype and what not, but they're not buying the Jagga Smith talk at all.

Carlton fans are just guessing as we are on here

If ever there was a year for twomey to be bang on… Langford and Allan would be unreal

Just dropped to my knees at Gosch’s Paddock and cried tears of joy

Thank you Cal - Langford and Allan will do just fine

Langford and Bo would be great would also be completely fine with Tauru at 9.

More than happy with Tauru at 9, just not at 5. To be taken in the phantom draft with st kilda’s 2nd pick, I reckon call must have word that, although he’s a bolter, he’s not likely to be a top 5 pick

6. Harvey Langford

Langford started his season as a highly-rated player but went on to be have one of the most commanding seasons of any draftee this year, splitting games open for the Dandenong Stingrays on a weekly basis and winning the Larke Medal as the best player from the under-18 carnival for his Vic Country performances. He marks above his head, has a raking left-foot kick and boots goals. The Demons saw Langford's traits up close during the pre-season when he trained with the club and he has only flourished more and more since then.

If not him? If Langford goes to the Crows the pick ahead, then Alix Tauru looks the next leading contender for the Melbourne pick. They will also be able to wait to see if one of the other premium midfielders slides through, albeit unlikely.

11. Bo Allan

Allan is a man in demand and for good reason. His end to the season – on the field and off it – again highlighted to recruiters his potential value, having come back from injury to play in Peel Thunder's senior WAFL premiership and then blitz testing at the Draft Combine. He is a big, strong, tough, athletic midfielder who might start his career as a defender but can run all day, bustle through traffic and dominate around the ball. He is also considered a future leader, another appealing aspect for clubs considering him with early selections. Melbourne is right in the mix for Allan.

If not him? There’s a chance Alix Tauru gets through to this point, at which point he would be expected to be taken. Otherwise, if not Allan here then Xavier Lindsay will be strongly considered, while Tobie Travaglia and Joe Berry are also likely in the mix.

So either Langford or Tauru unless one of the mids slides out unexpectedly.

Outside of Allan it's likely Lindsay, Travaglia or Berry unless Tauru is on the board.

Been huge fan of Berry this year, would not be upset at all if we took him here and happy to see a link to him for the first time.

An impressive effort by Cal Twomey. He definitely does his research. I would say he is normally about 80% to 90% correct with his choices.

Would be very happy with Harvey Langford.

Not so much with Bo Allan from WA, as I would much prefer the Demons take Xavier Lindsay from Victoria.

We desperately need players who are excellent kicks and elite decision makers.

I wonder how hard the eagles or Dockers will come for our P9… Freo might offer 14 and a F1. Can’t see the eagles doing the same offer….

Draft picks: 5, 9, 79 (likely to use three selections)

All of the Dees' work during the trade period was done in securing pick No.9 off the Bombers, giving Melbourne back-to-back years of two first-round selections. Clubs have gone to them with offers for pick No.9, but it's very hard to see them moving from their draft hand. After the early selections, the Demons will use one more national draft selection. They've shown some interest in Werribee mature-aged small forward Jack Henderson, who dominated this season averaging 22 disposals and booting 15.3, and the same for Oakeligh midfielder Zane Cochrane, Bendigo forward Archer Day-Wicks and speedy small Mitch Kirkwood-Scott. The Demons are also expected to grab NGA prospect Ricky Mentha jnr, most likely as a category B rookie consideration, while they can match a bid on intercept defender Riak Andrew, younger brother of Gold Coast's Mac. They will upgrade Judd McVee and Jake Melksham to the senior list.

I'd prefer Lindsay over Bo

I do acknowledge Allan's ceiling with his rare athletic profile however

Well the one I just corresponded with is convinced they will take FOS as originally predicted.

Would be very happy with Langford/Allan. Will just be praying that Draper is taken before pick 5.

But the Eagles do have 12 and 26......😉

That a boy, Cal!

Langford and Allan would be a terrific result.

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

It was bad enough that the Melbourne Football Club created yet another humiliating scenario inside its wretched season at Marvel Stadium last Sunday, but the final insult is that it has been commanded to return to the scene of the crime to inflict further punishment on its fans this week. Incidentally, if this match preview, of a game that promises to be one of the most unattractive fixtures in the history of the game, happens to cut out of your computer screen three quarters of the way through, it’s no coincidence. I’ll be mirroring the Demons’ lacklustre effort against St Kilda from last Sunday when they conceded the largest last quarter turnaround for victory in the history of the game.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.
