Supdeano 31 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 So we're still making excuses for Petty's performance (selection) because A) lack of preseason/injuries B) he's playing out of position It's not all on him, I get it, it's as much on team selection that causes him to either play unfit or play in a position where he's ineffective. But we can't rely on these issues when analysing performance. If you're not fit or in position where you need to play, then let's call it out. He was monstered by Draper and not much more effective in the forward line v Mackay. Out muscled, out bodies, out worked across the ground. 4 Quote

monoccular 17,760 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Just got home after a great fighting win against 24 opponents - umpire 22 and that pretty boy ?2 tried their hardest in the final Q though in fairness pretty boy gave us 2 late frees. Very excited by the younguns special mention of the first years Windsor Kolt AMW who add exhilaration and excitement, and particularly Windsor's royal command performance in goal assists and delivery forward in general. JVR fought manfully in the ruck though. we missed him badly in the deep forward line. Far from convinced re Petty as a ruck though he did OK around the ground as far as I could see. Max is irreplaceable, so kudos to the whole team for a very even effort - no obvious passengers (despite pickett fence's undisguised dislike for Petty). 12 Quote
Kev 10,926 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 (edited) How about that, able to take the foot off the pedal late in the fourth against against a contender. We know how to win when we play with effort and will. Building at the right end of a season. The next (Freo in Perth) is a big test again, hope we learnt plenty from the Alice loss. titan_uranus 25,255 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Just noticed that Rivers had 29 touches (second most for all players, behind Langdon), but only 67% TOG. Incredible, really. 10 1 Quote

I've been highly critical of Petty for a fair while. Isn't a ruckman but I do think people have been a little tough on him tonight. 2 4 Quote

Either JVR sole ruck and have another impactful forward, or a Fullerton/Verrell. Either of these options would have been more fruitful than Petty, either as a ruck or as a forward option. 1 1 Quote
Mickey 4,777 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Just watching the replay. It's obvious the umps gave a bit of leniency early on based on the weather. And we had a number of calls go our way, including TMacs spoil on Langdon. On the weather, it looks like we have finally stopped trying to handball our way in wet weather. The number of times they just hacked it forward off the ground when needed was actually good to see. The kids aren't just alright, they are seriously tough. Melky just wins so many important 1 on 1s. Loved McVee toweling up Stringer, and May getting into him when he tried the don't argue. Langdon's running is unbelievable. Imagine running nearly 16km (🤮) and having a guys say 'Nah, I think I'll run another 2km.' 8 Quote
Big Col 1,356 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Two shoutouts. The first one is for Oliver. He had 25 possessions today and I think you could say this was his best game since Rd2. He's still a long way from Peak Clarry but I have the gut feeling he's going to play some seriously good games before the end of the season. The other is for MIlkshake. I know it's been said plenty on DL tonight but I need to say it too! His penetrating 'link' kicks are sublime. He could have had 4 goals today (missed a sitter and handballed one off to Lingers) and we are seriously a better team with him in it. 10 1 4 Quote

I’ve read the comments on this board for 10 years and generally never felt the need to add my voice to the many reasoned, cogent and considered comments. However, having noticed a growing trend for commentary against Goodwin and Oliver, I feel the need to speak up. The former delivered the first premiership for the club in 57 years and has turned around an absolute [censored] show, imbuing the group with the character on show tonight. The latter, regardless of how you personally judge him, is arguably the most influential player to ever pull on the red and blue. 4 best and fairests are some proof. Others in that conversation are Barassi, Flower, Gawn and possibly Petracca. I digress. As it transpired the move not to replace Gawn tonight was the right call, despite many using it as a platform to deride the coach yet again. We are two kicks from second on the ladder, and have an exciting young crop coming though. Windsor will be a star. Could NOT have said it better myself! Thank you James!!!! I hope all the Goody-bashers enjoy a big fat serving of humble pie, even better… a cold and lumpy serving. PS PLEASE KEEP ON POSTING. We need to hear more from folks like you. Unfortunately the misery-guts, doom n gloom-mongers on here are the most vocal. A Joe the goose handball for a goal is hardly anything to write home about. Fact is he just shouldn't have been selected and I'm puzzled by the back patting and self congratulating types who are justifying his selection, when he was very poor, unfortunately again. I'd love to see him be a great player for us again, but his form just doesn't warrant selection currently. 1 1 Quote

He's too weak in the contest, really struggles to hold his ground and at least break even in 1:1s. If he gets a good run at the footy he's good but even then his marking isn't elite. Needs to at least halve the contest around the ground but is ineffectual way too often and looks to the umpire for frees when he has just been outmuscled. 2 1 Quote

Dr. Gonzo 24,468 Posted July 13, 2024 Posted July 13, 2024 Great to get a win for Kozzie's 100th and glad he was able to hit the scoreboard. He had really gained some consistency this year which is due to him spending more time in the middle. He doesn't need to be the matchwinner every week, just needs to play his role and then take the chances when they come like the last 2 weeks. Crazy to think he's still only 22/23. 3 1 Quote
