The obvious solution that nobody wants to talk about is a video referee. Most of us can see the howlers in real time . The video referee can look at all decisions and non decisions in real time and make a call to assist the umps.

We are closer than most people think to AI based umpiring - I think we will see some sort of AI involvement in the next 10 years. We have an incredible large amount of Video footage we can use to train AI models to interpret rules and make a decision. Benefit is that these models would have the ability to process live video from multiple angles. In time the live feeds will be significantly better in quality and will be supplemented by other data like ball sensors, goal line tech and other innovations. 

Question is can the game wait that long and what can we do in the meantime.

He is probably the token Thorn, who helps SEN and Social Media to have daily content.

If that happens people will stop watching full stop all this winging over a game and after all the only ones winging are the media who have an investment in ratings and sales and supporters who most of them have no clue about the rules all they can say is BALL at a game.

Time for the AFL to limit interchange to 32-40 a game and that will slow the game down and when fatigue sets in it won't be as quick and easier to umpire.

The state of lawlessness in the last five minutes of Collingwood v North was a site to behold. Shoving of players nowhere near the ball, Daicos red-hot in front of goals = not paid. Unwatchable.

The media should not be lauding Collingwood’s performance in the way they have, that game was won by the two non- decisions (Daicos and the 50m penalty)

Rubbish, how many players miss from 30 and lose close games, is that the umpires fault is it, no game will be perfectly umpired and there will be mistakes full stop so what's the answer to umpire a perfect game then and don't tell me video recall we have a unique game people need to stop sulking over it.

There has been a crazy amount of games that have been decided by bad calls or bad non-calls of free kicks over the last couple seasons. Not 50/50 calls, just flat out wrong. 

The AFL fixed up the holding the ball fiasco in 1 week so there’s no reason they can’t fix up the rest. 

There’s been two goals (can’t remember which games) this season that have been paid, the replay has shown it was touched after going back to the middle and the commentary team just… didn’t really say anything? The off field umpire just missed the footage that everyone else saw? Doesn’t get spoken about again?

It’s all amateurish at best or the AFL just likes the results so it’s ‘meh’, sooo I guess they literally aren’t interested in games being umpired properly. So that’s nice.

 

I won’t even mention how you basically don’t even have to try and get rid of the ball anymore if you get tackled which is a rule called ‘insufficient attempt’. [censored] crazy

It’s not a given but I’m comfortable the result would have been different  had Daicos been penalised

Actually... given the circumstances... Yes.

Just like any number of close games have been DECIDED ( effectively ) by Umpiring [censored] Ups . 

Many will say it shouldn't be reliant upon THAT decision but that's an erroneous argument imo.. All decisions should be right. That surely is the point of UMPIRING  ?  So it ought not matter whether 5 mins in 1st ...19 mins in 3rd or 32mins in last...they are all the same .......or ARE they.  I suspect not. Whether North were tiring or not....totally irrelevant to that moment which should have been afforded a 'correct' decision.  The decision was WRONG... the result a travesty.

There will never be a perfect game of umpiring that's just a fact it called a game with various rules and interpretations if a side is up that far they should not lose the game but people want someone to blame, so do you want video replay every decision,  because every decision even by that will be disputed by the media and supporters and then you are back to square one.
