Well played AFL. The players want a longer season, but the AFL doesn't, so they tie expansion to crowds then schedule games featuring interstate teams at night in the middle of the week. It's pure genius.

It's pretty tough on semi professional players to have 4 games in 16 days.

The girls are being paid far more in 2024 than before. They are the ones who want their product to become more professional. Sometimes you cannot have it both ways.

We already know that the AFL are stretching the limits in some ways and trying to not get to a full fixture too quickly.

I find it amazing the AFL have a relatively new competition that has an even more compromised fixture than the men’s competition.

This season has taken the competition backwards by many years.

Frankly not sure how to turn it around

Attendances barely over 2k even for Collingwood matches.

I'd almost be tempted to start again... All games on Saturday afternoon... one game on Evening TV perhaps.

Free entry... etc etc

And seriously re-think the rules to encourage open and attractive football plus scoring

Looking at the ladder right now, we’ve played six of the top eight and are scheduled to play the other two in the next two Rounds. Of the two teams that we’ve played who are not in the eight, Geelong made a Preliminary Final last year where they lost to the eventual premier Brisbane by 4 points. In other words, it’s about as tough a fixture you could possibly dream up given the teams you don’t play in your allocation of 11 games. Worse, given our injuries this season.

Considering the injuries we've suffered and the BS fixture we've been handed and the start we've had.

Sneaking into the finals would be an incredible achievement.

They've really transformed with their tackling pressure and run in the last 3 weeks.

Go Dee's, you can do it.

we could win the last 3, finish 7-4 and miss finals.

We need to beat both Hawthorn and Collingwood and Richmond to beat Essendon to make finals - Hawthorn is a big hurdle.  Port should win both matches and Essendon should beat Carlton.

Yep, that's how I see it.  We have a much, much tougher draw than those we are up against for a final eight spot.  And that's not even considering the injuries we've copped.  But then it bodes well for next year - Harris, A. Mackin and Beasley back, games into Gall and Campbell this year, and a number of our key players still 25 and under.

Dees 11 matches

7 matches versus top 8 teams for

2 wins 5 losses

4 matches versus bottom 10 teams (10th, 11th, 16th, 18th)

4 wins

Clearly the best team outside the top 8.  Some clubs would have been anxious if Dees AFLW team had got in the finals.

We wouldn't have won it though 'norm'...

I think the adversity and player changes this season sets us up well for the future.

There's is still a bit of a shake out that needs to happen and that's going to be hard for Mick.

Dees lost Birch, West, Gay, Sherriff and Wilson from their best 21 last year and did an excellent job this year covering these five players and the many players injured through the season including most for significant parts of the year.  No big clean out needed in my view.  It’s now giving more opportunities to younger players and the returning stars like Mackin and Harris.

Not a big clean out 'norm' but I would think there are a few who have previously been automatic selections that would make way to allow some of the fresh blood to develop.

The team is in a good place...

Starting again like that would put the AFLW back to the AFL on the 60’s.

You surely can’t be serious how would Clubs get the benefit of TV coverage? All playing at same time ?

Very little needs to be done to maintain the goal scoring as each list gets better due to the players starting in Women’s competition from very young ages now. And it’s girls kids wishes to play AFLW.

What is needed is regular time zone each year and a regular draw now over all Clubs.

Will be very interesting to see how Hawks go vs North Lions and Crows in the Finals. Will be competitive no doubt but as for winning Flag probably not.
All the easy draw they had may come back to haunt them.

Just put this here...All Australian honours.

I would think McNamara & Hore.

Is Goldie eligible? I reckon she is terribly underrated in the competition but should be under consideration as a defender.

Yep, confirmed officially on the AFL website:

Absolute joke, as usual

When MFC won the Mclelland Trophy what percentage went to the players? I thought it was 100% - Dorks only offering players 50%. Miserly.

We should have an easier fixture next year which will help us to bounce back.

I think Goldie was our BnF for our club this year.

She's was just consistently solid week in and week out even through our dive in form.

Hope she's recovering ok.

And yep Goldie, Macca and Hore should all be AAs.

I don't want an easier fixture next year, I want to see a fair fixture for the whole comp!

Each team should be playing each other once.

And yep, no real change to fixtures much for the "product" as Laura calls it.

Just less compression which is something I guess.

Still only 12 games even though all KPIs improved.

Is increasing to 14 games really that much of a stretch for next year?

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
