Folded. Tassie becomes the 18th team and thatโ€™s all this competition can sustain. McKercher becomes the inaugural captain.

They'll never do that simply because the AFL can't handle a bad news story.

Ten years or so ago they had the opportunity to lay down minimal solvency rules etc. for clubs to meet ten years later. The problem was GCS and GWS would have failed them.

Melbourne clearly has at least two teams too many as evidenced by the need of four teams including us to sell home games interstate.

Docklands with its roof closed policy due to TV coverage has become a dark hole for daytime football

Nah they'll admit the 19th team and then say supporters are clamoring for a 20th team so as to eliminate constant byes

If Geelong are allegedly making over $1 million dollars a game at KP does anyone know why they are still playing home games at the MCG instead of 11 games at home?ย

Two reasons:

They make the same with a crowd of 70k plus at the MCG

The football dept wants exposure to the MCG

(The answer is for Essendon and Carlton to make the MCG their exclusive home venue and then there would not be room for Geelong)

Not sure Jy Simpkin should be in the North side let alone captain.ย

North will be eliminated or fully relocated when they cannot sustain themselves. They are years away from improvement and that is amplified with The Map of Tassie coming in.ย
The AFL wonโ€™t pay for North to survive, as there is no benefitย

They should have moved to The Gold Coast, when the opportunity was there. Itโ€™s too late nowโ€ฆ

Wowzers.. heโ€™s Captain?!ย

I really thought North would be more competitive this year given their drafting, Larkey etc.

Something is amiss perhaps

Thanks DJ. If they still need to break 70k just to make the same amount of money as a game at KP it explains why the would always nominate the likes of Collingwood and Carlton to play against I guess. I'd still prefer to have an actual home ground advantage though.ย

They carry on about servicing their Melbourne supporter base as well.

Mind you a few MCG games against GWS would see them saying we can no longer cater to that base. Geelong have for a while carried a lot of clout at AFL headquarters

They've effectively been selling a home game to Collingwood for the last 30 years.ย

Depends who you ask.ย

Some say Geelong wants all 11 home games in Geelong but the AFL doesnโ€™t want 30,000+ missing out on tickets to games featuring Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon etc.ย

Some say Geelong wants the two MCG home games to maximise its number of games on the G each year (ie irrespective of money).

That answer (Ess/Carl playing more at the G) is not a viable one for so long as there is a minimum game requirement at Marvel per season, nor is it one I want to see. If they get more home games there, others have to fill the void with home games at Marvel. Richmond, Hawthorn and Collingwood all have them already. Weโ€™d be next.

I wonder if nth players will walk out like some of our players did because of no success. I know Sheezel has signed on and thier ruckman but Zuhar has held of contract talk which is interetsing considering he had a crack at Horne-Francis.ย

I feel for nth fans because I remember what it was like being in this position. I wonder how much time Clarko gets before the pressure relaly ramps up on him.ย

Sheezel was poorly advised and/or made a poor decision.ย

crows back line must be weak. norf scored 80+ points, enough to win many games

of course, norf don't even have a back line - lol

I hope the AFL remind Geelong of this home game, that theyโ€™ve effectively sold to Carlton, when they inevitably start whinging about wanting a home final at KP.

Cant have it both ways.

Gee I thought Higgins would get a week,ย  but he's got 3. Harsh I think

What a joke. The definition of a football act, made worse by another playerโ€™s bad decision to try and kick the ball.

Can live with a week for that, but 3? Would never happen to a big club.

I looked at it again and itโ€™s actually pretty rough. He definitely slung him.

Our players are having a few days off, Goody and Co should be at the G taking some notes for our next two games. Looking forward to the challenge.

Maxy will destroy the Cats rucks next week.

He'll be there. With a few others I'd imagine.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourneโ€™s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last yearโ€™s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although itโ€™s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sundayโ€™s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to foolโ€™s gold.
