CLAYTON IS BACK!
Clarrie will play in the 2s tomorrow.
From the Captain's Run:
Senior squad for tomorrow: May, Roo, McVee, Trac, Windsor, Viney, Lever, Gawn, Billings, Langdon, Laurie, Bowey, Schache, Thommo, Howes, Rivers, Verrall, Nibbler, Fritta, Spaz, Kozzie, Chin.
Gus and Spargo nowhere to be seen. Didn't sight Hunter, Petty, Melks, Disco Turner. Shane McAdam did very slow runthroughs on the boundary line.
The rest, including Clayton, Salo, Marty Hore trained with the Casey boys when the seniors finished up.
T-MAC, Browny, Andy Moniz-Wakefield, Fullaton, Taj Woewodin all did stuff away and with the main group. I spoke to these boys and they all hope to play in the next week or two.

Lovely morning for a run, overcast, no wind, cool temperature.

It's a captain's run of 23 players strutting their stuff. It looks like Kossie will be able to play.

Interestingly they are giving some first yearers, new and young ones a go at it, Verall, K.brown, Laurie, Windsor, Howes, Chandler, Billings, Schache.

They appear switched on in the drills.

Goody has implemented a few different scenarios in the no contact sims. Once he called a “power play”. Pushes a backmen forward of the stoppage, gets the wingers to be wide ('will only work if you are very wide') and they take the ball straight down the middle from a backline stoppage. Another drill had them receiving the ball on the inside corridor and hitting into the forward area. I can see us playing with a more open forward area this season, or at least at times and using a bit more strategy during the game, as we change the styles up. Keep them guessing Dee's.

Forgot to mention that Brayshaw was also a no show, as well as no, Spargo, Petty and Turner

Great to see all the rehab do some sprinting drills and were included in the team drills with the seconds (except McAdam's and Jefferson). Woey wearing the yellow concussion protocol hat.

Oliver made his way to most of the Casey players. Those Casey appeared a bit star stuck and Clarry introduced himself, shook hands and encouraged them. Nothing highfalutin about him. The Casey players did the drills well, looks like most of the younger ones. I'm impressed with Tyler Williams, Ryan Valentine, Charlie Muley

He’s as likely to get injured in the 2’s as he is in the 1’s!

My prediction is, year of the Sparrow. Hit some great passes, looks fit, appears slim downed, and I reckon, will run through brick walls.

Hoping Rivers will also continue his trajectory. When they entered the field, the backline came out together, no Trent. Reckon, Howes will play his postion (linking back flank) tomorrow and Rivers will be pushed into the mids.

Windsor has learnt so much in his short time with us. Interesting to see how he goes, I reckon he will be a class above.

I really want to see K.Brown. Reminds me of R.Flower body shaoe, very elusive (cannot be tackled), has great vision, uses/changes the angles and has skills.

Hope Verrall has got what it takes. Big game for him.

Another no show today was Melky

Interesting that Kynan Brown is getting a gig with the main squad and Tholstrup isn’t

Tholstrup occasionally misses his kicks and he can fumble. If enthusiasm, team player, leadership, run your heart out means anything he would be in.

Perhaps they want to iron out his weaknesses. Just give him some time to add some perfection.

Playing the game itself true.  But depends on who the opponents are in the 2's.  Unlikely tomorrow I'd hope, but some players who are always only going to be at VFL level, like being able to tell their grandchildren what they did to a star player back in the day.   Physical, and maybe verbal.

Anyway not enough to affect the decision to play him.

If the team above is correct we probably don't have enough defenders to push Riv in to the midfield in more than spurts unless they get really funky with Billings or K Brown. So I'd expect Riv to be mostly back, but with Salo and Gus hopefully not far off they'll have that option especially if Howes measures up.

Brown over Tholstrup might be wanting a mid/winger to cover some minutes so the forward line gets some continuity - or as much as they can.

I think it's the same for Verrell. Do 30% game time in the ruck so we don't overdo Max and that allows Schache to stay forward for more time and hopefully get some chemistry with JVR. Not that Verall isn't impressive, I just have my doubts that he's seriously in line to play any time soon.

McAdam told me he should be right round 2 the calf niggle is not as bad as he first thought

From everything I’ve read would he even be close to AFL fit to play round 2, not injury wise, but actually for and be able to run both ways.

I hope so, but I more still think he will be a player who spends half the year injured and the rest AFL unfit.

This is worrying for Hunter as he obviously reinjured or flared up the calf after returning to full training. Having said that it is giving Windsor a good crack at Opening Round.

With Woey getting concussion, it leaves the door open to probably Windsor, but, K.Brown is also knocking. A chance that Rivers also steps into the wing position.

Makes for an interesting practice game!

Hunter has the skills, but the 'old man' problem, calf strains, is restricting his preparation.

We have quite a few old heads and some young that will push by at least round 3 to 4; Salem, TMac, BBB, Fullaton, Petty, McAdams, Turner (10 to 12 weeks), Melksham, Jefferson, Brayshaw, Spargo and AMW.

Tough for them to have an interrupted pre-season.

Thanks for these reports. Wasn’t expecting them so it’s a nice surprise. Bring on the scratchie.

Verrall is an important player on our list while we must have sensible expectations for him this year he showed enough last season (with injuries and a fitness base that wasn’t even VFL standard) to give me hope that he can evolve into a good tall whether that be a forward or forward/ruck

Good luck to him let’s hope he competes well and stays healthy

Wonder if Clarry might get a gig late in the Scratch Match tomorrow.

Can’t WAIT to see him today

That pic was from yesterday. One thing I will say even if you dont make it at AFL you will be very fit.

Clarrie was in good humour.

Mixing with the Casey boys was fine.  Seemed good camaraderie.

Marty Hore just looks like a footballer whereas Tholstrup (Kolt) and Sestan (Seso) not quite so much.

BBB is coming along fine but will he be match fit is the question.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
