May 2013, Peter Jackson is appointed as CEO and the long climb back begins.

By the end of that year Neeld was gone.

Daniel Cross and Aidan Riley had arrived, and Colin Sylvia had departed all under free agency.

Dom Tyson, Bernie Vince and Viv Mitchie arrived during the trade period. I can’t believe we gave up pick 2, 20 and 72 for Tyson and picks 9 and 53.

Aaron Davey, David Rodan and Joel Macdonald retired, and James Sellar, Josh Tynan, Troy Davis, Tom Gillies, Tom Couch, James Magner, Nathan Stark Rory Taggert and Neville Jetta were all delisted.

The National draft saw Christian Salem (9), Jay Kennedy-Harris (40), Jaden Hunt (57) and Mitch Clisby (82) added to the list.

Ther Rookie draft saw James Harmes (2), Max King (19), Alexis Georgiou (35) and Neville Jetta (50) added as rookies.

Paul Roos is lured to the club by Jackson as senior couch to start the rebuild.

During that preseason a young fresh-faced Angus Brayshaw and Billy Stretch are invited to train with the club.

Christian Salem is now added to the list of only men still standing along with, Jack, T.Mac and the skipper.

It was a tough season which saw Melbourne finish 17th on the ladder with 4 wins and only ahead of St Kilda on percentage. The slow climb back had begun.

Enjoy.

PJ was the recruit of the year.  He put everything back on the rails, the football department and the admin and the Board.

Turned us back into a football club, properly run.

Watch out for North Melbourne in the coming years ( it took us 8 to get back).

PJ has done a review of their operations, Clarkson has been brought in as coach and Todd Viney is running their football department.  Sound familiar?

Luke Tapscott was a big unit. Shame he didn't make it

So, extending the "New Hope" theme I can imagine the following:

Obi-Wan Kenobi - Peter Jackson

Luke Skywalker - Paul Roos

Chewbacca - Max Gawn (but only if he had his beard by then?)

Darth Vader - I'm loath to say Mark Neeld as I think he was on our side, even if he wasn't a success.

Han Solo????

Who else???

Jar Jar Binks - Mark Neeld

I would have considered Neeld more of an Admiral Ozzel.

I know Star Wars is the movie you are referring to but I have never seen it.

I think you will need to find someone to play the key protagonist in the Paul Roos signing.

Someone to play Kevin Dyson.

Apt or otherwise?

Darth Vader went over to the Dark side. (Essendon)

Jar Jar Binks overwhelmed, bumbling and inept but somehow manages to get to the right spot at the right time for the…

…ball drop but can’t do anything with it (you’re being too kind).

Meanwhile still flickering intermittently from the distant aftermath …

Such a shame Nev couldn't quite maintain his place in the team to make it to the 2021 premiership side.

Agree Rod was a shame for Nev Jetta, Nathan Jones and of course Jayden Hunt they were all great servants of the club.

Is that Cameron Schwab ??

SONS, at the time undisclosed sources 'reported', somewhere on the cutting floor was a pilot trailer for a proposed Starwars interquel, tentatively titled The Architect of Doom. Fortuitously, the franchise (the AFL) 'ensured' it would never see the light of day.

2015 - Foundations

This was the year that the foundations were well and truly laid. Three more names were added to the list of those still standing.  I took a lot of footage in 2015, so it will take some time to sort through.

2015 - trailer. (Release date to be determined ==> https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-MhQnCP/i-Qsc6VhH/A

And they’ve got an incredible core of young talent in LDU, Wardlaw, Sheezel, Larkey (with McKercher and Duursma to come)

Six trailer or teaser?  Clocked in at 4 seconds!

Anyways loved the mystery and romanticism of the accompanying musical choice. Star Wars is obviously passé with Isaac Asimov now the inspiration but who is l,Robot?

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

It was bad enough that the Melbourne Football Club created yet another humiliating scenario inside its wretched season at Marvel Stadium last Sunday, but the final insult is that it has been commanded to return to the scene of the crime to inflict further punishment on its fans this week. Incidentally, if this match preview, of a game that promises to be one of the most unattractive fixtures in the history of the game, happens to cut out of your computer screen three quarters of the way through, it’s no coincidence. I’ll be mirroring the Demons’ lacklustre effort against St Kilda from last Sunday when they conceded the largest last quarter turnaround for victory in the history of the game.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.

  • PREGAME: West Coast

The Demons return to the scene of the crime on Saturday to face the wooden spooners the Eagles at the Docklands. Who comes in and who goes out? Like moving deck chairs on the Titanic.
