Just got an email from Tam in the club that 4 inaugural Dees, being Lily Mithen, Paxy Paxman, Sarah Lampard and Lauren Pearce have all re-signed.

Come On Yes GIF by Melbournefc

Hoping for some injury luck for Lampard next season, we really missed her.

"Mithen (25) has signed a three-year deal, that will extend her time until at least 2026, while Paxman (35), Pearce (30) and Lampard (26) have signed one-year contracts, that will see them remain with the Dees until at least 2024."

Is this the first year that AFLW players can sign long term contracts? If so I wonder if there was a reluctance to offer them to any of the recent departures and whether that resulted in them moving on?

Yep.

In which case, possibly as much about the longer contracts offered by others? Particularly Hawks and possibly Bombers? North is the curious one...

North is the curious one...

Free car? Someone a few doors down from mine has one. It has a big Kangaroos logo on the front door on both sides.

With all the delistings and re-signings, I've decided to do my best 21. I'll do a best 21 after the draft too.

B: Heath, Gillard

HB: Goldrick, Colvin, Lampard

C: McNamara, Purcell, B. Mackin

HF: Hore, Harris, A. Mackin

F: Bannan, Zanker

FOLL: Pearce, Paxman, Hanks

IC: Mithen, Campbell, Chaplin, Fitzsimon, Rigoni

I would have swapped the three year deal for Mithen with the one year deal for Lampard, but that's just me.

We need to be very careful to balance the now (Pearce) with the future (Campbell) and ensure that Campbell is getting the opportunities that she needs to stick around long term.

Disappointing lack of capitals W

Keeping track of contracts (with age as of 1 Sep in that year) -

2027: Hanks (27), Hore (32)

2026: B.Mackin (27), Mithen (28)

2025: Goldrick (35)

2024: Colvin (33), Harris (27), Lampard (27), A.Mackin (27), Paxman (35), Pearce (31), Taylor (26), Watt (36)

Everyone currently aged 25+ (plus Hanks) has been locked in and announced, so no age-related retirements this off-season. Assuming the remaining 10 are locked in, that would make 23 players retained of the list of 31 from 2023.

Yeah; I wonder what the stories were, behind the quite different lengths of contract that resulted, all apparently in a common timeframe of negotiation. Club driven or player driven?

Lost 4 quality players but the team still looks strong enough to challenge again next season.  Add 2-3 quality youngsters and would like to see a fit TAYLA HARRIS back and firing.

Whom hasn’t signed that is still on the list- anyone, please advise.

Amen to that. I liked the one-year contract for Tayla for 2024 as this season was a tricky one to negotiate on. Another season for us and her to decide how the last phase of her career looks, hopefully to finish it out with us off the back of a great season.

Agree, at the earliest opportunity. Big future. She's still SO young though that we've got away with another year likely with a promise for something more substantial next time.

To be a fly on the wall! There is something of a logical pattern to it, though, with priority given to seniority for those in or coming into their prime, one year for the over 30s and the very youngest/newest, and a little extra to some key cogs (correlates strongly with B&F results) and those who potentially had some negotiating power in terms of other interest but who the club views as keepers (I'm speculating Bannan and McNamara in that category).

Good analysis, DIO.

You, surely?...

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.

  • PREGAME: Geelong

After a one-year reprieve, the Demons return down the freeway to Kardinia Park — the site of both one of our greatest triumphs and one of our darkest days — as they face the Cats under Friday night lights. This one could get ugly. Who comes in, and who comes out?
