dees best 22...

within two weeks one would assume that we have almost all of our list available (clint bartram, issac weetra and mark jamar are the exceptions). clint bartram had an outstanding season last year but i wouldnt say he is gauranteed a walk up start. he would then be the only regular senior player out with injury. how do we pick a best 22?

this is the 22 that fronted up for us last saturday:

MELBOURNEfc Team

Backs: D.Ward, N.Carroll, A.Yze

Half backs: N.Brown, B. Holand, D.Bell

Centreline: M.Bate, J.McDonald, A.Davey

Half forwards: B.Green, B.Miller, C.Bruce

Forwards: C.Sylvia, D.Neitz, B.Moloney

Followers: J.White, S.Godfrey, T.Johnstone

I/C From: P.Johnson, N.Jones, L.Dunn, M.Warnock

Emergencies: B.Pickett, J.Frawley

of the players not playing, Rivers, robertson, wheelan, mclean come into our best side. walk up start.

ward, brown and warnock will be the players who lose their spots, but that leaves us with an extra midfielder. we also need a player to go to get robertson in. thats gonna be either dunn or miller, and with a couple of poor weeks in a row miller could be the unlucky one...

however, petterd has performed fantastically this year and is one who deserves a spot, while bartram had a great season last year, and is only out for injury. pickett, is suspended for a few weeks but when fit is in our best 18. can we fit either petterd or bartram in? having a look at the modified team below i think there is definetly room for another of either bartram or petterd (or even CJ) as a backman, but that means we probably need to drop another midfielder.

thoughts on the mfc best team?

Backs: M. Wheelan N.Carroll, A.Yze

Half backs: C. Bruce, J.Rivers, D.Bell

Centreline: M.Bate, J.McDonald, B. McLean

Half forwards: B.Green, L.Dunn, A.Davey

Forwards: C.Sylvia, D.Neitz, R.Robertson

Followers: J.White, S.Godfrey, T.Johnstone

I/C From: P.Johnson, N.Jones, B.Moloney, B. Holland

Emergencies: B.Pickett, J.Frawley, R.Petterd, C.Bartram, B. Miller, C.Johnson ?

i dont really think there is anyone else who could justify a spot in this team at the moment, except for perhaps newton as the reserve forward. but that aside how do you see the make up of the best 22, assuming we are injury free?

Bartram for Godfrey...no doubt about it.

Petterd for Yze.... who is playing for his life and if he can only make it in the back pocket then Yze is gone. The kid is definitely special.

Also Frawley for Holland.

Pickett wont be emergency because he will be breaching team rules in some fashion. He is gone.

even with the quality of the tagging jobs godfrey has performed over the past 3 weeks? i thought he has been amongst our best this season, and if he continues this tagging form would be a walk up start to the side.

the list of 'emergency' players were more the players who i think can stake a claim for a spot in the side.

i havnt seen frawley, but obviously the FD rate him very highly to name him as an emergency straight away. do rate him that high that he demands a spot in our 22 having never played a game for sandy seniors or for the dees?

Moloney, Jones in starting line up.

A fit Pickett also on the ground without question.

include Petterd, Bartram.

Throw out Holland, Godfrey is you want to play good finals footy.

interesting line up either way - lots of great running ability but short on quality big guys in the team, especially ruck and CHF.

Hmmm...food for thought.

bay riffen, you have added 3 players into the team, all smalls (petterd, bartram and pickett). have dropped holland and godfrey. who else would you drop? and do you worry that we will be too small?

Godfrey is Godfrey. How does 3 weeks erase the obvious in the past six years. People forget Bartrams capabilities. Gofrey only got a gig this year because Bartram was know to be going in for a post season ankle op with a long recviery. If Bartram is fit, Godfrey goes.

So it should include Yze. Petterd should be back in once fit.

Holland will be gone at year end. Frawley will take his spot as soon as he is fit. You have picked Holland by default.

M.Whelan, N.Carrol, D.Bell

N.Pettard, J.Rivers, B.Green

B.Moloney, B.Mclean, T.Johnstone

M.Bate, B.Miller, A.Yze

R.Robertson, D.Neitz, A.Davey

J.White, C.Bruce, J.Mcdonald

interchange: P.Johnson, L.Dunn, C. Sylvia, N.Jones

Emerg: C.Bartram, N.Brown, S.Godfrey

back up k.p.p: B.Holland, R.Ferguson, Warnock, M.Jamar

Back up runners: C.Johnson, B.Pickett, D.Ward, P.Wheatley, C.Bizzel

Developing players: Frawley, Garland, Newton, Buckley, Weetra, Neville

Rookies: Hughes, Neaves, Bode, (Hayes)

That's our full list at its best...

if the opposition have a guerilla forward, then B.Holland comes into the team. If there is a definite need to shut down a player then Bartram comes in. The back up k.p.p and runners should be used as depth only.

of our developing players, i sincerely hope Frawley, Newton and Buckley force there way into the starting 18 by years end.

Weetra and Garland cannot be expected to make any impact till 2008. Neville is gawwn

Whelan Carroll Frawley

Petterd Rivers Bell

Green McLean TJ

Bruce Miller Davey

Sylvia Netiz Robbo

White Jones Junior

PJ Bartram Bate Moloney

whilst miller is a worry at CHF, he is the best option for CHF we have at the moment, dunn isnt big enough, bate is getting there, newton and garland untried

frawley is a unknown, but i think his pace, height and athleticism would be a perfect fit for our backline

petterd and bartram can swap from midfield and backline with ease, and along with whelan and bell, our best backline is pretty good

no yze, no pickett, no brown, ward, wheatley, warnock

i agree with most of your justifications, particularly yze and holland. the only query i have with the frawly/holland swap is that you are making a massive call for a kid who hasnt even played a full half for sandy seconds. are you that confident he will slot straight in. no zac dawson about him?

regarding godfrey, on his current form would you just drop him? if the form continues would you be happy to kepp him in the side? and i agree i have probably forgotton how good bartram is...

I think Holland is a goner once Frawley gets going. Holland is surviving on Frawley's injury. I see alot of Zac Dawson in Holland. ;)

I dont think you can take Godfrey into a final series. I think Bartram's upside is greater than Godfrey's. I dont get carried away with three weeks of football. Godfrey goes.

i actually dont mind miller, but if robo is to return he has to come at the expense of one of the tall forwards i believe. neitz, dunn and miller are the three and miller out of that miller will be the one to go. dunn is showing more and neitz is captain. robo is better than miller... its a tough one. can we play all four in the side? who would we drop to bring miller back in?

Not really based on form or injury status just on game influencing ability (or potential).

FB: Whelan Carroll Frawley

HB: Bell Rivers Bartram

C: Dunn Jones TJ

HF: Bruce Robbo Davey

FF: Sylvia Neitz Yze

R: White, McLean, JMac

I/C: PJ, Green, Bate, Pickett

Next up for selection: Moloney, Pettard, Buckley, Holland, Jamar, CJ

On the way out: Miller, Ward, Godfrey, Brown, Ferg, Bizz

After watching Dunn perform against the Doggies, I think wing could be his ideal position - great engine and mark.

Frawley is unproven but will do as serviceable a job as the other options (and will only get better).

B: Whelan - Carroll - Bell

HB: Wheatley - Rivers - Frawley

C: Bruce - McDonald - Davey

HF: Sylvia - Bate - Pickett

F: Green - Neitz - Robertson

R: White - Johnstone - McLean

I: P.Johnson - Moloney - Jones - Petterd

E: Yze - Miller - Bartram

No Yze?

Yes he was out of form for a long time and yes I called for his head but Yze has gone a long way to redeeming himself this year. He asked to be left out of the side, he got in the best at Sandy, he was then put back in the team when we needed him (maybe before he was ready) and delivered. I'm not saying he is a champion, not many at the MFC are, but he is in our best 22 this year. No doubt.

My team:

B: Bartram, Carroll, Whelan

HB: Bell, Frawley, Rivers

C: Johnstone, Bruce, Green

HF: Bate, Dunn, Robertson

F: Davey, Neitz, Yze

FOLL: White, McDonald, McLean

I/C: P Johnson, Jones, Moloney, Sylvia

EMG: C Johnson, Newtown, Petterd

concerned at seeing one of our best 22 as players who have never played a game.

just put whelan in every possie

Thank you for saying what I was thinking. Frawley is a complete unknown till he actually steps out a few times for Sandy first. Those of you who are pumping him up so much so early should horn down a bit!

He is an unknown to you.

He was very good in the pre season until injured for a young player.

FCS, any best of side that has Holland in the 22 has got to be kidding. The kid wont have to do much to be above that.

I've got my Miller voodoo doll at home, have been poking pins into it for the last week. Have had some success with his ankle....

Well, make sure that if you get the opportunity, you take him out with a crow bar to the shin..... that'll teach him and you may just get a medal

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
