Have seen Ah Mu play twice this year and the kid is a beast. Absolute man child who's exactly a need for use being a forward ruckman.

Alot of water to go under the bridge obviously but even if they did bring back the ability to match bids back to 20+ we could still possibly end up in a Mac Andrew scenario.

Had a quick go at mapping out what the draft order looks like and used Rookie Me’s draft rankings to try and see how things are shaping up (player tiers, pick swaps, etc.).

Have tried to pair Academy & F/S players with their clubs so Ashcroft is ranked higher than he appears here (Lombard & Camporeale are actually pretty close to where their clubs would be selecting). Lots still to play out, but bolder the players that have caught my eye for various reasons.

  1. North                              Smillie
  2. Richmond                     O’Sullivan
  3. WCE                              Luke Trainor
  4. Adelaide                        Draper
  5. Saints                            J. Smith
  6. Hawks                             Moraes

  8. GC (Dogs)                     Lombard (GC Acad)
  9. Brisbane                        Levi (f/s)
  10. Melbourne                     M. Whitlock

Interesting that you have Whitlock going to us, noting the draft order will likely change anyway. He’s that 200cm ruck forward who is agile and good below his knees like a Luke Jackson. Will be interesting to see if he’s of interest to us.

Was purely based off RMDC’s power rankings, so not a mock draft, but Whitlock would be handy. Last week it would have been Lalor!

Outside of the current top 5, I’m a big fan of Murphy Reid & Toby Travaglia.

I quite liked the look of Oliver off the half back line.

For a midfielders draft, there are certainly a few talls developing that look like quality.

Trainor, Shanahan, Faull, Whitlock brothers, J Murphy, O'Farrell, Mraz, Sims, Nicholls, Welsh could all be taken within the first 2 rounds imo.

Midfielders should be the priority. We have lost Jordan, Harmes and Brayshaw in the last 12 months and should continue to develop extras.

Don't disagree, but we have holes all over the ground at the moment.

In two years time our tall department could look like

Ruck: Verrall

Fwd: JvR, Jefferson, Kentfield

Def: Lever, Turner (fwd?), Adams

Unknowns: Gawn (34), May (34) Petty (traded?), Fullarton (best 22/retained on list?)

I am assuming, but could be wrong,  that we will have lost all of T-Mac, Ben Brown, Tomlinson, Schache and KFW. We could see a steep drop off in performance in both May and Gawn although if anyone can play quality footy into mid 30s it's Gawn.

For arguments sake, if we remove Gawn, May and Petty from the best 22 equation in 2026 then we will have just two proven best 22 talls in Lever (30yrs) and JvR. Turner is showing promise and Jefferson is developing nicely at VFL level and should hopefully cementing himself in the side. Calls on Kentfield and Verrall are too early to make while Adams is worth developing but a way off looking AFL quality at this stage.

Trading talls in would be ideal but they come at a premium and nearly every club is after these players.

I'd be going midfielders and looking to FA for KPBs.

Vic country v WA.  Both Harvey Langford  and Cooper Hynes had great games and I’d be happy to have both onboard with MFC next year.  They offer good mix of Langford ball winning and skill, and Hynes with competitive Cripps like midfielder (aggressive).  Add in with an elite mid like Moraes, Draper or Gross.

Absolutely. I think this year has some very good talent down to at least picks 35-40.

Geelong very heavily into Cooper Hynes.

Do not be surprised to see North take Luke Trainor at number one. Grandson of Doug Wade and his  grandfather on the other side, Ex. north President, Frank Trainor.

We certainly need some extra quality mids spirit of norm smith but we don’t have the same volume of quality picks we had last year we also need another tall back and ruck plus make space for Judd McVee on senior list. I’m thinking that we need to clear 5-7 spots on the list, what do you think and how do we achieve it?

I think 5-7 spots will be fairly easy.

Brayshaw, J Smith, Tomlinson, Ben Brown, Schache & Hunter. That is 6 spots and I didn't even have to look at the rest of the list...

He’s been very good for Metro. Does well in one one one’s, competitive and hits targets. Really like him as a small or medium defender, can see him playing on a wing as well, probably not big enough to go inside. Defends and rebounds equally well.

Oliver could land in the first round, I’d lean toward pure midfield options for Dees in the first round BUT if Riv were to star as a mid the rest of the way through the season and our recruiting focus lands on a back six backfill for Riv, Oliver would be high up the preference list.

And Luke is a massive North fan. If his form holds the rest of the way through the season, I def could see North either taking Trainor or splitting the pick with a view to taking him. Don’t think they have a need for Smillie or any of the other top rated mids.

Best available regardless of position if we get a top 10 pick. Free agency for what we need.

We had 11,  22 years or under players against the Lions. How many of those will be elite or Very good at least? Time will tell but we need elite players coming through.

After the Vic metro v SA under 18 match on the weekend, I will add Murphy Reid to this midfielder list, perhaps looking that he would be around pick 20 or 21.

Dees should try to get say the eagles 2nd round 2024 pick to get him … and offer up our MFC next years 2025 first round with other pick swaps too.

Sounds like he is getting close to a top 10 pick according to the AFL.com.au draft guys

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
