Tomlinson is one of the enigmas of the recent team selections, for me. I have been impressed with his ability, build and mobility since he joined the Mighty Dees. I prefer him on the wing - where we once played him - for his talent to 'go solo' finding absolute space continuously and ready to receive.

These were the days when our 'long-bombing' was our absolute stamp on the game ... and Tomlinson was always 'overlooked' by downfield defenders/midfielders striving to put the ball on top of the forwards'/deep forwards' heads in packs - another kicking statistic and metres gained marque for that distributor. We were just getting out of that poor habit but it has returned for unknown reasons to our modus operandi.

Your suggestion of putting Tomlinson as a CHF makes sense to me, in the absence of two or three key forwards due to injury and the onset of '...[censored] on a bull...', aged weariness. What are the positives? Well, Tomlinson does have an impressive frame, is quite quick and mobile and finds space so well he decreases the prevalence of opponents that assists him to mark and play on with considerable ease (and these attributes characterised his game and applied talents for what was about 60% of his game time - when someone lined him up with a foot pass, eventually. So, we made him work out of synch as a backman. Heh? Just to interrupt the game flow of Lever and May, in a crowd.

Tomlinson can mark, bump and is more mobile than most, is a remarkably agile tall, is very fit these days and in reality, is built like a brick xxxxhouse, quite good at freeing himself from tackles, holds, jarring collisions, episodes of holding. I repeat, he also finds consistent space and can do much within it. Now, as part of his baptism as a 'defender', he also knows a few more tricks with the old 'don't argue' tackle and those tackles that stick, within the rules.

If he plays at CHF and gets three kicks, two marks, and two goals, he will have done more than those asked to step into the breech. He'd play a good wayside chapel for the long-bombers who attempt to move the ball effectively into the forward arcs. He'd most probably synch very well with JSmith, another agile forward with an ability to find space, take the grab and slot the goal - and play a defensive mindset within the forward line.

Just some thoughts ... perhaps, worth a try?

Unfortunately since doing his knee he is slow and struggles to move off a straight line. Pre knee mobility etc. he’s a lock in backline, post knee only a replacement if May injured.

Would have loved to have seen Smith or McDonald lay a few heavy (legal) tackles on Maynard...can't believe no one tested him for the whole game.  For that matter a few heavy tackles on Cox wouldn't have gone astray.

We let Coll get the mental ascendancy early and never tried very much to get it back.

Anyone who thinks Maynards HIT on Gus was nothing but a Footy accident  knows nothing about football.  Maynards JOB is to do things just such as this.

Someone needed to put him on his derrier and whisper sweet nothings in his ear.

Finals arent a social gathering.

We have no mongrel

If a professional athlete needs his coach to "rev" him up before a QF against Collingwood in front of 92,000 fans its his problem not the coach. I actually think we expected it to just happen and then Gus goes off and bang, we're 4-5 goals down.

The last 3 times we have played the pies we have been down by 3 goals or so in the first 10m

If you think that's not on the coaches preparing the players i can't help you

Let's just keep doing what we always do then and fight back from 30pts down ffs

Mcrae is from the Mathews school of coaching.  if it bleeds you can kill it

It shouldn't have to be said but finals are different

Big key Forward. Not having one is killing us in high pressure games

Collingwood should have lost last night, we blew a huge opportunity

Yep, also accuracy is killing us, even last time  against Pies we kicked 8-18 and fell over the line by 4 points. Should have kicked 18-8, been an ongoing issue. Good enough to win the flag (with the current team) if accuracy is significantly improved.

last qtr … Fritsch non contact in marking contest with Quaynor (we called it and commented on it at the time)

“That one when Quaynor went back with the flight, he should have been poleaxed. Quaynor said 'I think Murphy looked after me', no he didn't. Fritsch just didn't want to make contact. That's the difference between going all the way in finals.”

"If I was Goodwin, I'd be showing that on Monday, saying 'if you do that ever again, even if you are our leading goalkicker, you are not playing. Put your body on the line.'" ***Luke Hodge***

I can’t argue. It was poor at the time and not an act of a desperate player.

Is Schache an option???

I think he is behind Tommo - in the games where Schache kicked goals for the doggies it was usually because he had no opponent

Is there any word about how Gus is doing? He seemed pretty shattered, as was Goody’s reaction. I cant help but wonder if he’s told himself and loved ones that he’d give it up if he was concussed again. I wouldn’t blame him if this is the case. The risk of CTE is pretty scary.

That's just absolute Bs.

Firstly, Fritsch was not at the contest in time to poleaxe anybody.

Secondly I want Fritsch looking for goalkicking opportunities not poleaxing opportunities.

The real question is why didn't the ump call it back ??

I don’t think so. We clearly took the advantage. It’s not the umpire’s job to recall it if we mess it up.

Shame, from memory he was a #2 draft pick.

Really proud of the fight back. Bring on the Blues/Swans

Agree great fight back indeed Fittest side in AFL Worried about team selection Max beaten by Cox in first quarter and his dump kicks turned ball over This is where momentum starts Grundy in ruck to start would have been much better option

We need John Northey coaching Dees He would have team at fever pitch to attack opposition We seem to be subdued when we start Collingwood we’re ready to kill Get a few more aggressive players in team Dean Chiron like

Noticed that May was way up the ground for a lot of the night and we gave away a huge number of goals out the back.

We couldn't stop their ruin through the corridor and overlap handball. Structure was off

Grundy/ thommo for mine and Jordon or Woewodin

Tmac and Laurie out

And i would rather see dirty ground balls than 50m bombs. We've learned nothing in 3 years

Ah yes the "If you didn't know the results and read this thread you'd think we lost by 10 goals" brigade.

It was a big game, people are disappointed. Go easy.

If I was a Collingwood player or supporter, I would’ve loved what Cox did to Max at the first bounce.

Yes the game dies down, but some intent from the first bounce says to other teammates let’s go.

Unfortunately that first quarter partly cost us the game.

Theres no more second chances from now, we do the same against Carlton and it’s ‘what if’.

This high press does my head in; May and Lever won’t gamble on the counter by feet and hands but love gambling trying to get the footy 75 out.

I am becoming more concerned about how we are built out of a selfish defensive system.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
