Tonight Brett Rosebury breaks the record for umpiring the most AFL games when he runs out for the 503rd time. I know it's not specifically a Melbourne Demons post, but without umpires, we don't have a game.

Reading the article reminds me that for every new or changed rule that our players need to learn, so, too, do the umpires who we expect to get it right first time and every time.

So, congratulations Brett Rosebury.

Given the abuse and derision the umpires have to put up with, that's a great record and excellent service. He must have a hide of steel.

I don't recall any celebration for his 500th game, maybe I missed it, but that is a massive achievement.

Well done Brett, a fantastic achievement  and still one of the best going round.

I am always happy to see he is umpiring our games.

It was publicised at the time, and he had a guard of honour from both teams (Colingwood v Fremantle).

A terrific example for youngsters looking to learn and move into umpiring.

Such a dearth across all levels of ammo and juniors that it’s likely to have a negative impact on the game at some stage soon.

Well done, Brett.

In fact, well done all umpires.

Agreed, 500 games is unbelievable. That's the equivalent of umpiring every round including finals for 19 years. He's also one of the better umpires.

That is a mighty effort and great to see some umpire recognition on DL.

Occasionally when watching a game I'm struck by just how many decisions umpires have to make and communicate within very short periods of time at an often frenetic pace these days. It's even more obvious now that umps are mic'ed up. Especially with needing to say "Stand" with every mark (surely this will end at some point?).

I don't think there's another sport that requires so much involvement of umpires not just in adjudicating the game but directing players and often with the expectation that decisions be explained to players in real time as well. When you add in the fitness and other physical components (centre bounces), it's a lot.

Anyway, congrats to Brett!

I am really glad to see some credit given to umpires for a change. That is one heck of an achievement and should be celebrated like any milestone.

Good job @La Dee-vina Comedia!

Incredible achievement. Umpiring 503 AFL games to break the record in a thankless job constantly being abused by crowds is amazing. Well done Brett Rosebury - hats off to you!

What Lou said 👍🏻👏🏼

  • PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

With both sides precariously positioned ahead of the run home to the finals, only one team involved in Sunday’s clash at the Adelaide Oval between the Power and the Demons will remain a contender when it’s over.  On current form, that one team has to be Melbourne which narrowly missed out on defeating the competition’s power house Collingwood on King's Birthday and also recently overpowered both 2024 Grand Finalists. Conversely, Port Adelaide snapped out of a four-game losing streak with a win against the Giants in Canberra. Although they will be rejuvenated following that victory, their performances during that run of losses were sub par and resulted in some embarrassing blow out defeats.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

The media focus on the fiery interaction between Max Gawn and Steven May at the end of the game was unfortunate because it took away the gloss from Melbourne’s performance in winning almost everywhere but on the scoreboard in its Kings Birthday clash with Collingwood at the MCG. It was a real battle reminiscent of the good old days when the rivalry between the two clubs was at its height and a fitting contest to celebrate the 2025 Australian of the Year, Neale Daniher and his superb work to bring the campaign to raise funds for motor neurone disease awareness to the forefront. Notwithstanding the fact that the Magpies snatched a one point victory from his old club, Daniher would be proud of the fact that his Demons fought tooth and nail to win the keenly contested game in front of 77,761 fans.

  • PREGAME: Port Adelaide

The Demons are set to embark on a four-week road trip that takes them across the country, with two games in Adelaide and a clash on the Gold Coast, broken up by a mid-season bye. Next up is a meeting with the inconsistent Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • POSTGAME: Collingwood

Despite effectively playing against four extra opponents, the Dees controlled much of the match. However, their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to convert dominance in clearances and inside 50s ultimately cost them dearly, falling to a heartbreaking one-point loss on King’s Birthday.
