I have an idea for the fixture, to even up past injustices, Dees don’t play at Geelong for the next 40 years.

Make sure we get the two heavy hitter club CEOs in that caption. 

I floated the idea of a 17-6 fixture on here a few months ago..... the CEOs are on Dland.

I think the term " 17-6 fixture redraw over wildcard weekend" doesn't mean that these games are all played during one weekend. Rather, the "over" means "preferred to". 

Bit odd calling it 17-6...  

23 rounds in total, 17 part is fine, as you play each club once, at the beginning of the season. Then they split you into 3 groups of 6. That's 5 more games not 6.

I get that there is the gather round apparently that accounts for the final missing game. But this model doesn't allow for that to work as well as having another opportunity for the derby/showdowns/q clashes that is used by teams for rivalry/gate receipts etc.. 

Basically you can't play that round early without compromising the 'integrity' that they are seeking in the 17 game component of the season. Yet you can't play it later without compromising the other 5 games (or account for the fact that gather round is best suited early in the season when everyone has optimism. Play it in between and it impacts the determination of the 3 groups therefore fails there too.

Dunno if I'm over thinking it, but it doesn't work for me.

... and when/if we get to 19 teams, what then?

Regardless of what those clowns decide next year; for us the likely scenario is as follows.....

Geelong at the Cattery  ,Norff in Tasmania,  Lions at the Gabba  Eagles in Perth  Port or Crows in the stupid gather round which is compounded by a short 5 or 6 day break after playing in WA  or QLD.

9 day mid season bye.

MFC wont lobby and wont complain when handed a pile of steaming dung.

I posted this earlier under the Wildcard Round thread but, just to open it up potentially to more Demonlanders, am reposting it here:

I know they're all about getting more blockbuster games between equally-matched sides, but how would this work in conjunction with Top 8, or 9 or 10? You couldn't have the whole 8 open on this basis because the higher-ranked teams in the 2nd bracket would be extremely advantaged compared to the lower-ranked teams in the 1st. Even if you had the Top 6 quarantined after 17 rounds, you could have a ridiculous situation where say the 13th team after 17 rounds gets up to 7th at season end because they get 5 games against weak opposition!!! If people are currently worried about tanking, this would encourage tanking for 7th or 13th positions as well as 18th. Much easier. 

What's wrong with the current system? You get an easier draw if you're a bottom team because your extra 6 games are against generally weaker teams. It helps with equalisation which I'm all for. We can't play 34 games a years and I think the current system works so why compromise it? Also, the current system gives you the flexibility to play 22, 23 or 24 games. The 17 round option only works with a 22 round season.








 

Scrap the finals then, with that idea the top 6 will already play each other in the remaining games so finals will just be rematch fatigue. By the end the top 2 on the ladder can play in the Grand Final.

Ridiculous idea in itself but it's still better than theirs.

+1 - derby double up so the perth, sa, qld and nsw teams play eachother twice

+5 rounds literally drawn out of a barrel FA cup style.

this means that no one can complain about who you play twice. its literally the luck of the draw. televise it in november, release the entire fixture in december including r24 with venues and times (when is that being released by the way?).
imagine watching us pull out wce, hawks and north to play twice next year! would be amazing.

Hidden in plain sight might be the AFL's long game...adding Tasmania but losing one of the current teams to bring the total back to 18.

Or the alternative is every side plays two of the top 6, middle 6 and bottom 6.

Keeps the fixture as even as possible.

The idea of playing everyone once, getting to 17 games, and then drawing the fixture based on top 6, middle 6 and bottom 6 doesn't work.

Imagine if the side sitting 6th was like St Kilda right now - got some early season wins but in a major form rut. Under this model they'd be locked into finals and would play 5 straight games against 1-5, sides that on current form they're nowhere near.

If you sit 7th on small percentage, you might then win your last 5 games and still finish below the side in 6th who lose a stack of games but make finals anyway.

And before anyone says "but everyone plays everyone else once so it's even after 17 games", no it's not. Some sides will get Brisbane at the Gabba, some will get them in Melbourne. Ditto Adelaide. And Port. Etc. It's not even. Other than 34 games, the fixture will never be even. This model is in many respects worse than what we currently have.

How about this?

17 rounds - everyone plays everyone, everywhere, after which:

• Colonwood, Carltank, Jeelong, Essendrugs, Horeforn and Ninefmond are eliminated automatically for past deeds gawn unpunished
• the remaining 12 assemble in melb for six weeks and play each other Satdee afternoon at 2pm
• bring back the final four, these clubs play their finals at suburban grounds, Deez always play at MCG
• Granny at MCG played against Deez
• Deez win.

They aren't saying you are locked into finals after round 17 are they?  I think the worse scenario that you point out here is the Saints, out of form would get belted for 5 weeks and then lucky to make the finals, but on the flip side, you could have a side like Carlton hypothetically sitting in 13th on percentage only. They get the next 5 games against teams such as West Coast, Nth and the like and make a big surge back into the finals.  But it's potentially a false dawn cos they are playing against teams that have all but given up and probably playing for zilch.

None of these models are a magic bullet.  That said I don't have an issue with the wildcard round for finals. It gives 5th and 5th on the ladder a bit more of a benefit of a week off.
