How many have we had. I know Jackson and I think Jesse Hogan won too. Is that it? Guess the jury is still out on Jackson. Hogan has been solid in the games I've watched but the poor bloke has had battles of the ground as well to be fair.

Add Jared Rivers and you have three winners from Melbourne.

According to Wikipedia, equal top with three winners each are Sydney, Fremantle and Melbourne. Upon closer inspection, though, you'll see that Brisbane Lions have had two winners and Brisbane Bears also had two, so I would suggest it's reasonable to argue that Brisbane is on top of this particular ladder with Melbourne in equal second.

I didn't have great views of the other end of the ground on Friday, and it seems a lot of Judd action happened down there! I pretty surprised when I saw his highlights package, firstly his positioning smarts on Charlie, and then his cleanness to take it first time and charge out of traffic was remarkable

Huge wrap that he was chosen to play on Cameron and he didn't let anyone down.

I don't understand why the idea of moving him into the middle is such a popular one. Halfback flankers can be critically important in setting up attacking thrusts, and his present position utilises his skills perfectly.

Yeah I'd probably want to see Rivers given some time in there before Judd.

i...don't?

the team have been at pains to say we base our game plan on contest and defence

i think one of the things that they don't say is that we also base it on good decision makers in the back half and pressure in the front half

the likes of the three talls plus salem, mcvee, rivers, bowey mean that we have 'smart' players behind the ball to set up the play as we bring it forward and then the two talls and the three smalls to bring it to ground and keep it there in the f50

Backline isn't a real problem it's further up the ground where don't have a player with his skills and speed in the middle...

In McVee we have found Hibberd's replacement.  Did as good a job on Cameron as Hibberd has in the past.  And he has tamed a few other small forwards this year.

Moves like a gazelle and its a joy to watch him weave through traffic with lowered eyes, taking his time looking for the best option.

As an East Fremantle product, Freo must be ruing they didn't take him in that rookie draft.   They could do with a gun defender who is a star in the making.

Only difference is that Hibbo is much stronger  physically. His combination of power and speed is what makes him such a good defender

McVee will get there with a few more pre seasons.

Good call  - he really is a smooth mover.

And such a smart user of the ball.

Big upside as he starts to get bigger and stronger. He'll be a beast with a few more preseasons under the belt.

I just watched that too. Good question by robbo asking if playing Hockey helped his defence.

Yes was Judd's answer.

These are the little 1%ers that successful footy clubs do in list management. Not as glamorous as writing big checks or chasing unicorns but they seem to work really well!

You need to have a word to your son!!  He can't just drop Salem!!  He needs to know it is possible to have = #1 favourites!!  I have Salem❤️, Hunt💙 (both since the beginning of time) and now Mcvee❤️ on my = #1 fave list.

However, as I can have only one avatar I confess to replacing Salem with McVee early this year so I get how your son feels!!

Yes, seems so.  There was that article earlier in the season where Hibberd said he was enjoying things one game at a time and would see how he felt by the end of the year

tbh I see many differences.  The common factor being they play a similar role however play it quite differently.

We don't need McVee to get to Hibberd's strength as we have Brayshaw to take that forward as and when needed; McVee will outsmart the rest, be they small or medium defenders.

Gus doesn’t have the leg speed to play on the same players Hibbo does. If anything you’d give that role to Rivers.

I am thinking of opponents like Rachele (I know he’s suspended) or Fogarty as an example. They’ll both outmuscle McVee and be too quick for Gus. Hibbo would be a great match up for either as he has the body strength and the pace to play on them.

McVee is more like Jetta IMO. He takes the role on that really nimble quick small, like Cameron or this week probably Rankine.

Where Hibbo is really unique is that he can play “tall” but he has the speed of a small. He isn’t as easily replaceable as I think a lot of supporters think. It says a lot that at 34 they’re priming him for finals.

If I think about our list, Smith is probably the player who is most “like for like”, while not being anywhere as consistent.

I assume Ashcroft and Sheezel will be two of the top three. Who would be the other one on the podium? Mitch Owens? Jye Amiss? Is McVee a chance?

When the Captain's did their preseason predictions one had McVee as their RS winner and he hadn't even played a game.  It couldn't have been Max as the rules are you can't vote for club/teammates.  Wouldn't mind that captain giving us Lotto numbers!!

The RS will probably go to Ashcroft being a midfielder and draft position.  McVee is 'off-broadway' but deserves to feature on the podium:  played every game, consistent performer and like Ashcroft will play finals.

What is in his favour is that the voting is at the end of the season rather than game by game.  So the judges can look at the season as a whole rather than tally the game by game votes.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
