There’s only one game on in the national championships - we see Vic Country play their first game on Sunday and it’s against South Australia who were disappointing last week.

Here are two articles worth reading -

2023 Vic Country Under 18 squad announced

PREVIEW | 2023 AFL U18s: Vic Country vs. South Australia

There are some interesting names in that VC squad including Harley Reid, Zane Duursma, Darcy Wilson, Cooper Simpson and Melbourne NGA prospect Riak Andrew.

The game will be televised live on Foxtel.

Hi WJ did Kynen Brown play?

Joel Freijah and Darcy Wilson (both mainly wingers but also play a bit inside and up forward) are 2 guys that I'm really interested in watching today. We've gone pretty heavy with KPPs in the last couple of drafts (JVR, Jefferson, Adams, Verrall and then picking up both the Turner's as rookies / pre-season selections) so potentially some strong running power might be something to look for in the upcoming one, especially if we keep both 1st rounders

Reid with 3 goals from 3 kicks in the first 5 mins. Anyone know much about Billy Wilson? He looks good.

They described Billy as a right footed Hayden Young. Good, smart ball user and definitely one to keep an eye on

Michael Rudd showed a bit as a left foot key forward in that 3rd quarter.

Liked De Mattias pace but sprayed a couple kicks, usually is better by foot from what I've seen previously.

Shipp prominent off the half back line.

Welsh and delean having good games for SA and like McAuliffe as well.

Tyler Welsh looks a ripper. Underage too.

Suspect a couple of clubs interested

He was excellent today. Crows have themselves a ripper to look forward to next year.

A career change...

Interesting that second among the bests for Vic Country was Kobe Shipp who is the son of former Freo player Andrew Shipp.

Yeah that's the one, horrible night with about 50 people there.

How did Duursma go, anyone watch?

Was well held. No goals, not in best players, dudnt get a lot of it, underwhelming.

Not really a good performance, but it’s only one game l suppose. The Adelaide clubs with the first crack at their kids should be reasonably happy.

Played inside mid for a lot of the game.  Finished with 20 touches and most of his good work came inside the contest and he won a few clearances, used his bigger frame well, but wasn't able to break away from congestion like he has for Gippsland (SA were good in the contest - McAullife in particular - and got numbers around the ball).  Switched forward when Reid had a run on the ball in the second half (Duursma had 11 touches to half time), was less prominent then.

While not a standout game, it was good to see Duursma play on the inside and win clearances and lay a pretty good number of tackles (read that he laid 8 for the game).

Did you catch this one @Pennant St Dee? Thoughts on Curtin?

I only watched this on TV, thought Curtin and Hall won the battle in the midfield and Curtin showed his versatility being able to play as a big inside mid. Friday was very impressive with his running power, which is certainly off the charts

Couldn’t go as I’m currently in regional WA but watched it on the AFL app, reckon Curtin’s performance gives West Coast further food for thought. Reid was super clean and showed how good he is but trading for 2 first rounders if they can guarantee getting Curtin is tempting.

For those who watched it, a late call up under ager who only showed a few snippets is Austin Van Der Struyf, he is one to watch for next year. Smooth mover off half back/wing with elite foot skills and fantastic vision. Captain of Christchurch First XVIII, where he plays as an inside midfielder

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

When looking back at the disastrous end to the game, I find it a waste of time to concentrate on the final few moments when utter confusion reigned. Forget the 6-6-6 mess, the failure to mark the most dangerous man on the field, the inability to seal the game when opportunities presented themselves to Clayton Oliver, Harry Petty and Charlie Spargo, the vision of match winning players of recent weeks in Kozzy Pickett and Jake Melksham spending helpless minutes on the interchange bench and the powerlessness of seizing the opportunity to slow the tempo of the game down in those final moments.

  • CASEY: Sandringham

The Casey Demons rebounded from a sluggish start to manufacture a decisive win against Sandringham in the final showdown, culminating a quarter century of intense rivalry between the fluctuating alignments of teams affiliated with AFL clubs Melbourne and St Kilda, as the Saints and the Zebras prepare to forge independent paths in 2026. After conceding three of the first four goals of the match, the Demons went on a goal kicking rampage instigated by the winning ruck combination of Tom Campbell with 26 hitouts, 26 disposals and 13 clearances and his apprentice Will Verrall who contributed 20 hitouts. This gave first use of the ball to the likes of Jack Billings, Bayley Laurie, Riley Bonner and Koltyn Tholstrup who was impressive early. By the first break they had added seven goals and took a strong grip on the game. The Demons were well served up forward early by Mitch Hardie and, as the game progressed, Harry Sharp proved a menace with a five goal performance. Emerging young forwards Matthew Jefferson and Luker Kentfield kicked two each but the former let himself down with some poor kicking for goal.
Young draft talent Will Duursma showed the depth of his talent and looks well out of reach for Melbourne this year. Kalani White was used sparingly and had a brief but uneventful stint in the ruck.
