More perspective

After 11 rounds in 2022 Geelong had 7 wins, 4 losses and a percentage of 128.

Who were there wins against? Vs who have we beaten thus far the Dogs in the 1st game… it’s not impossible they can’t turn it around but my gut feeling is that their tummies are full & they are not selfless as they were in 21

Reality we have beaten 1 team in the current top 8 the dogs since our straight sets exit in the 2022  finals! It’s either our players have dropped off or Goodys game plan has been worked out!

The top 8 is an elastic band  at this stage of the season. Adelaide would take Fremantle's spot if they won today. If that happens there would still be three of the top 8 that we haven't played (four if you count us!). Your point would be stronger if you talked about the other top four beating us!

Anyone know what the Gawn spray was directed at during the 3 qtr time break?

Was completely out of character..

I think he is just so frustrated at the moment. I remember him saying he tries not to show poor body language because he doesn't want the players to see. But I just observed him yesterday and every tackle & mark he dropped his head went down, his slapped his hands together & he didn't bother chasing

Salem showing strong signs that he is back

I agree. Some critical posts about him but to me he has some poise and composure which the team sorely lacks at the moment. And there was one instance where he turned side on to the contest, won the ball and kick passed 15 meters or so to a teammate. So some saying he's soft is off the mark as well.

Plenty of problems at the moment but Salem isn't one of them.

I was screaming to pass it to Brodie. He was literally on his own with not one Freo player around him. I hope that's something that gets pointed out

Could not believe this. I can accept that mistakes are made by the umpires, but that decision made me think that the AFL need to start penalising umpires for particularly egregious calls like that one.

Agreed, easily one of the contenders for worst umpiring decision of the season so far.

Results don’t lie, we are @ almost the 1/2 way of the season & 1 win against a top 8 team in 13 games is a good gauge. Team is in trouble either game plan isn’t working or player buy in / culture is the issue.

Wouldn't it be a whole lot worse if we were losing to bottom 8 teams?

Which wing? If you were on the Southern wing, you would have seen a lot of footy close up. If you were on the members wing with me you spent most of the day looking at the f**king big screen to work out what was happening.

Are you sure you were at the Demons game? Most of the play was on the member’s wing.

Teams look to control the ball against us by short kick and marking.

We guard grass and let them do it.

  • v Freo us 62 /them 92
  • v Port 41/70
  • v Hawks 105/72
  • v Suns 66 /94
  • v North 95/124
  • v Rich 103/81 Rich don't play that style of game
  • v Ess 71/89
  • v Eagles 95/75
  • v Swans 92/94
  • vLions 69/92
  • v Dogs 117/71

Teams know not to kick long to May/Lever and we are not great at dirty ground balls or short chip kicks.

The better teams control the ball and chip their way through our system. The poorer teams try but can't keep it up. Rich play a similar style to us in that they want to move the ball quickly.

And when we do get a turnover teams have become better at stopping us rebounding. We seem unable to 'control' or block the corridor any more nor keep the ball inside our fwd 50.

Rarely any small players at the feet of contests and the running around the boundary seems so much easier to pin us to one side.

There are serious things wrong with our game plan that teams are exploiting because we are so predictable.

As for our centre clearance work it is abysmal. The number of times Max would tap the ball fwd and Freo players would pounce and run it away in a cross cross pattern was infuriating. Freo lost their key ruckman in the second qtr and we were still monstered in the air.

We are a very one dimensional side with a totally dysfunctional fwd line.

Our depth is now being tested and its frankly not very good.

I agree we did get outnumbered at stoppage but looking at the stats we've beaten them in contested ball 157 to 141 and pretty much matched them in clearances. This is without our Mr contested possession Clarence of Oliver.

Something is not adding up, either it's a massive credit to our midfield unit for achieving those numbers without Clarry or we are doing gumball all when we get possession and our execution is to blame. Or both (yeah actually both)

Those numbers are distorted by our last quarter

Great summary.  Although I disagree with "depth not being very good".  Your 27th player is not going to be a superstar.  If there is a positive, is we are playing horrible football right now and going down by a kick or two.  Its not floggings.  Heads up lads.  Beat the Blues, get the season back on track.

Stats are a load of [censored], I will stick with the john Kennedy 3 rules:

You have the ball.

The opposition have the ball.

The ball is in dispute, means the umpires have it.

The game is relatively simple,  coaches made changes when they were getting beaten in certain areas, now they wait till the breaks, Yze has not impressed me as a midfield coach, and don’t get started on Stafford, but Goody has the total control.

Is it possible to get quarter by quarter team stat breakdowns? Never been able to find it anywhere.

I'm not sure. I make a mental note of it at the end of each quarter.

I think the thing that frustrates most of us is getting beaten the same way.

We lost 8 games last year. All the same way. We were leading. and were overun by teams running with overlap handball and chip kicks keeping it away from May and lever..

This  year isn't much different. And its not apparent that we have made any adjustments to that.

We rely pretty much solely on turnover in our defensive half. And when that breaks down we look very ordinary.

Early in the year our accuracy covered a lot of cracks. But we also moved the ball into the top of the 50m much more than we are doing now. I'd like to think thats the way we are going to play and we are hiding it now for finals but frankly thats laughable.

Goodwin is a coach who has one way to play and says 'if we play the way we want we will win the game' This becomes more than frustrating when its clear we are not being allowed to play the way we want and make no or few changes to counteract that.

As for our depth. Guys like Chandler, McVee Roo and showing signs of tiredness and aren't doing the things they did in the earlier rounds. When you don't bring in fresh legs the guys at Casey stagnate and can't just turn it on if they get picked in round 20 to cover an injury. We need to rotate more players through the team and keep everyone fresh.

We don't seem good at learnings given we talk about it so often

Here's an interesting table I found. The team first to 6 points wins around 60% of all games. First to 70pts wins around 90% of all games.

Stats are rubbish yeah?

We get it. You’ve posted it about 6 times today across multiple threads.

It’s 2 wins in 14 games, but I guess going back one more game doesn’t assist? And of those 14, 6 were against sides not currently in the top 8. Agree that’s a poor record but I’m not sure how relevant it is other than against the obviously good sides (ie Brisbane, Port, last year’s finals - less so sides like Essendon and Freo where the jury remains out).

At any rate, by the end of the season, if say Sydney or GC make finals (both are just one game out right now) and we get another win vs say St Kilda, Geelong or Brisbane, this sort of stat is going to look very different to what it does now.

An errant Fritsch snap last week goes through and we beat Port and this stat would be 3-5 including the two finals. But that win wouldn’t necessarily change the broader issues which deserve more focus than this stat.

I think you just answered your own question if were the team is at … can’t beat majority of current top 8 teams… I grant it they haven’t been flogged and yes they have another 12 games to improve, but the slide started from the straight sets exit & continues against quality opposition 11 rounds into 2023

I’m stating the obvious, which is what the footy world will do also , they have another 12 games to turn it around and haven’t been flogged, buts it’s a worrying trend & reasons unknown…game plan or player mindset?

Choco better have a good word with them this week. 5 missed set shots from directly in front.

A 24 point xscore swing on scores alone, not counting all the blunders which seem to be the melbourne way going forward at the moment.

Never been to a more frustrating game of football.

Thanks for that.  Where can i find it for other games, please?

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
