One of my coworkers never misses a game, but he'll be missing the Collingwood game because last year the Filth supporters abused my coworker's son (who has Down Syndrome) to the extent security was called and the family left at half time.  Unfortunately there are some pretty shocking supporters out there (not limited to Collingwood)

I wonder what crowds would be like if there was no alcohol served at the footy.

I go to watch the footy, not network or to have drinks with my mates.

As far as I'm concerned, you may as well stay at home if you spend half your time in the bar. But again, some MCC nuffies go purely to network.

I'm not advocating no alcohol at games btw, just that I think a significant portion of the crowd wouldn't attend without it. It's become so engrained in the fabric of footy.

The last few weeks in the MCC has been intolerable. People stand up in front of you 25-30 times a game, mid play. They don't even wait for stoppages anymore.

I'm sorry to hear this about your co-worker. That's pathetic.

Was hoping to go in to this match as rack outsiders but alas it's looking like we might start favorites.

you are kidding me.

Head to head we have probably won 3 out of the last 20 encounters and for a good portion of that time we were much higher on the ladder than the Pies. 2017 anyone ?

Mate have you ever been in the MCC? Calling someone a trade unionist is akin to calling them Nazi's 🤣

Member from 1979 -99.  Pretty much a mixed bag in that joint. You had the pro Kennett guys but also those that leaned towards the  ALP aka Trades Hall. Also loads of Pies were members unless they all got in on guest passes.. Takes all sorts.

I sit with a mate in level 2 of the northern stand (tridents) and we were the only two people in a row of 22 seats on Friday night. Nobody trying to get past for a beer or a pee. It was great.

I often have a beer or wine pre-game because since I sit in the MCC members I have to arrive early to secure a seat in the area I want. So lunch or dinner with a drink follows. But I have begun sitting in one of the alcohol free bays during the game because of the ratbaggery of some. I also hate it when would-be drinkers head off to the bar during play, or arrive with an armful of beers (in plastic!).

I have written to the MCC urging them to increase the number of alcohol free areas but had no response. In the old - that is pre-Covid - days there was no drinking in areas like the Balcony on Level 2, but that changed when we weren't allowed to congregate in bars. I wish the MCC would revert to that. The memory of a rabid Collingwood supporter with a beer in each hand going out of his way to harangue Melbourne fans (we were playing Sydney at the time) convinces me the drinking rules have been a step backward, but try telling the MCC.

There are heaps of dry bays in the mcc?? N41, n48, m45 q42-q45 rows a-f are all alcohols free.
standing room behind punt road is also going to be dry on Monday

Remember Brian Boyd? Big man at Trades Hall and big Demon supporter.

Greg Sword also.

Also the late Mike Hill, famous local government opponent of Kennett Government and mayor of "the Peoples Republic of Moreland" as Kennett's folk called it, was another huge Demon supporter and political progressive. And a great bloke.

One of the great things about our game is that supporters transcend the stereotypes.

Not heaps. Just two on the level I use (41 and 48). That's six more between them.

And as I said, it used to be that there was no drinking on that level unless you were in a bar.

It used to be that the game took precedence over getting on the turps.

42 is 50 year members bay and they are silent anyway and 46 is committee who are silent too. 37-40 is dining bays. So really only 43,44,45 and 47 who can drink. All they can have is mid strength in cups.

i have sat in the mcc twice for Melbourne games and the atmosphere sucks one being Anzac eve last year.  It’s dead and quiet and is the reason our crowd seems so quiet compared to other Melbourne sides.

personally prefer the zoo of the afl reserve.

Mate if I supported Celtic you’d have every reason to think that.

The Tippler was also empty when we got there afterwards. They say it always is for a Melbourne home game. Great when you’re ordering multiple espresso martini’s at the bar.

This is the same with me. Every now and then I might have a few drinks or catch up with people but that's not common and I'd prefer to do it at non MFC games to be honest. I even cringe when I'm there with my mate and get sucked into buying rounds which requires you to go and stand at the bar during the game, I'd honestly rather just wait till the end.

There's two things in life I want completely uninterrupted from start to finish: 1) At the Footy 2) At gigs. That means no asking me to go buy stuff during the event, no suggesting other seats or areas to go move to because we don't like this area for whatever reason, no being late and no stuffing around. For that time period I'm parked here and that's it.

And I totally agree, most people wouldn't go if there wasn't food and beverage as the attraction. Why would you, Kayo and a well stocked fridge! For a select few of us though the game itself is the attraction.

As for the MCC, I use it about 3 or 4 times a year and it's a bit of a waste to be honest.

I have enjoyed the "post"-covid rule change. I'm not a heavy drinker now by any means, but enjoy being able to sip through a drink or two whilst the game is on and I can watch it live and not on a tv.

Definitely a bit of societal/generational shift towards alcohol and drinking culture though.

Will be curious to see if it stays. Imagine it will be decided by $ though.

I think the simplest solution to stop fights is to bad drinking in standing areas where it seems to get the most rowdy as well as having dry bays around the ground. Would also help if mcg staff policed people who are being abusive properly

I agree. The quietness of Melbourne crowds do my head in.

They're not always quiet, but often they're quiet at the wrong times.

I remember going to a game against Port at the G in the early 2000s. There was something like 12k there. It sounded like 50k, so we can make noise (think Geelong and Hawthorn 2018 finals as well), but we don't do it consistently.

And I have to say, sitting in the MCC, there are so many Melbourne people that just simply don't understand the rules or have a decent feel for the game. But all clubs have nuffies.

We are louder when we are in the majority. Eg 25k melbourne fans in a 30k crowd against an interstate team will make more noise than 25k in 65k crowd against Essendon. It's human nature. People are less likely to ark up if the majority around them go for the other team.

I personally go off my tree as much as possible but understand not everyone is a big mouth like me.

Agree we are mostly quiet compared to other fan bases but can get very loud occasionally.

I doubt many saw this but there was a time in the 2nd QTR after about our 4th horrible F50 entry in a row that went straight to a Carlton defender and the crowd were restless and negative.

As Carlton ran the ball out, Trac turned to the crowd and yelled " show some [censored] support" during play. I heard it from the 2nd level. At the next stoppage he was revving the crowd up lifting his arms repeatedly.

Our support and lack thereof is so important to our team. Some of the regulars around me are so damn negative and at times disgraceful with abuse hurled at our players it's embarrassing.

That's amazing. Can't believe I missed that and hasn't been mentioned in the media. Good on trak - sometimes that gets the crowd going nuts.

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
