I think we got shell shocked and went back to old habits.

Ive said this before (and been proven wrong), but if we play slow contested footy and continue to bomb it in to our F50 we will struggle again this year.

We are great defensively but terrible offensively.

Brisbane exposed our lack of skill and poise, and I am not sure we can support all of our inside mids in the one side of they can't hit targets.

I know we've trained for faster crisper ball movement and I know and trust goody will back the boys in, but my gut is telling me bring in the kids if they can keep poised and find targets.

Did clarry or Viney hit any targets before 3qtr time? That's our fatal flaw.

Yes - every time we get stopped on the half back flank and bomb long it’s only a question of when the opposition score. For mine it’s clear, we must win the clearances to win the game. Our attack must come from winning in the middle

At least be breaking even. Get enough decent first use of the footy, lock ball in the forward line.

Does he get the Jack Watts cat o’ nine tails  an Oscar or a Gordon Ramsay nomination?

Especially considering that was the first loss he was involved in for 16 games and that Ben Brown was ‘to retire himself early in the season to give us an extra list spot.’

Oh, that brings back memories… I am going to find that poster and mock them mercilessly.

Some valuable lessons:

  1. Midfield need to relearn how to shark opp ruckmen.  For mine that is the biggest lesson from this game.
  2. Viney and Grundy need to work on their leadership:  When Gawn went down a re-grouping pow-wow was required and I didn't see this happening (on the tv broadcast).  Very disappointing that no one else stepped up.
  3. Too much left for Lever to do.  May is our last line of defence 'general' marshaling the defenders while Lever positions the mids.  If May was there I very much doubt the Lions would have had a 4/5 goal head start in the first quarter.  No Gawn and no May left too much for Lever (and to some extent Petty) to do.
  4. Train the expected conditions:  Other teams in the past have trained with a greasy ball in Melb for a game in humid Qld.
  5. Stay focused:  When Gawn went down it was like the air went out of a balloon.  It looked like their minds were not on the job.

Brisbane weren't as good as they looked and we weren't as bad as we looked.

I'm really ok with this game.  Very valuable lessons learnt and it is great we learnt them this early in the season.  While I'd rather Max not be out we will see how mature our team really is.

Surely these lessons should have been learnt 100 x before?

I agree totally!  But sometimes it is easy to forget the obvious, revert to old habits or need reminding especially when the pressure is on.

Watch how Collingwood are made to attack players who are attacking their players. Even over the Boundary Line.

Watch how Brisbane drop the ball when attacked, Their players don't expect handballs in scrimmages. They just expect a play on flag by the umpire and duly get it..

Not sure what to make of this game. Missing a few key players and then Max going down in the 1st Quarter gives a reason for a below par performance but it will not wash in this instance.

No idea why but the midfield just did not fire at all. Showed no intensity and exerted very little pressure on the lions. Without that midfield pressure, our defence was put under a lot of pressure with the ball coming in a million times. We lost the centre bounce clearance as a consequence of a lack of pressure and the worst thing about that is that we did not have any answers. We did not look to adjust. so very strange.

Of the mids, Harmes looked the most out of sorts and looked to give away more frees than the number of possessions he had. drop him for a run with Casey and bring in Jordon. May back next week will help the defence but I think there will be a close look at Petty's game. not one of his best. Would not be surprised if he had a run with Casey and Tomlinson is retained.

Would not mind Brayshaw given a bit more time on the ball.

Max to be replaced by????? JVR looks a possibility given the rucking he did for Casey over the weekend, Schache is a possibility. They may both come in if TMac does not come up.

Hope that at training this week there is a clear message given as to the reasons why we underperformed and a clear message on what needs to be done to ensure it an aberration.

I see the selection this week as an indication as to how the selectors are going to perform this season. We have a lot of depth and the players have to accept that if they do not perform, they are going to be replaced.

Go Dees!

Just took it upon myself to watch the replay of our game. Been too angry to watch until now. Given all the whinging that the Lions have done, let me do a little of my own:

1. The game was turned on it’s head after the first ‘rotation’ when Grundy was on the bench

2. The umpiring in that period was horrendous

3. Max Bailey goes for a goal, realises that he will have his kick smothered, drops the ball, only to retake possession and try and draw a high free kick by ducking his head, Brayshaw tackles him, clear holding the ball and is called ball up. Lions score from inside 50 stoppage

4. Just prior to the Gawn injury there was a horrendously short boundary throw in which doesn’t reach the ruckmen..allows Brisbane a roving goal

5. Towards the end of the quarter Lachie Neale is wrapped up in a strong tackle and throws the ball out, as called by commentators- called play on…

6. Oscar McInerney takes a contested grab on Tom McDonald while Grundy is resting. Kicks a goal

7. Joe Daniher kicks a goal from forward fifty stoppage, whilst McDonald is rucking - [censored] poor tackle from TMAC

8. Our mids fumbled thereafter and the game was done

my takeaway was that the 6 minutes before quarter time lost us the game. It was done at quarter time due to the aforementioned incidents. They were the result of poor umpiring and bad management covering Gawn. I reckon we got rotations wrong. I realise it’s hard, when you haven’t planned for a situation like that, but that’s the way I saw it.

we evened the contest in the 2nd quarter, but reverted to dump kicks inside 50. Gave us no chance to score goals

Agree with what you say and would like Hibberd to have a run.

I also agree with what you are saying as well. We had the maggot trifecta during this game, the ones that do NOT give our players any Free Kicks and consequently any Brownlow medal votes from what i hear.

Lots of serious analysis here, here is a more light-hearted look at the game, or part of it anyway ...

Flew to Brisbane, then by train and bus to the Gabba. Plenty of Dees supporters in attendance. Game on, Gawn gone early and Dees look as cold as his ice pack.

Sitting in a nest of Lions supporters, they are happy as their team dominates, then, with twelve minutes to go, a loud bang and the ground goes dark. I suddenly feel better, as no longer do I have to sit silently and watch my team being devoured by the hungry Lions.

My first announcement to the surrounding fans is: “Game's done, both teams will get two points”. Haha, very funny is the general response, but for the first time, the Lions supporters look worried. As there’s no sign of a restart, I can’t resist stirring the pot: “The Dees have been robbed, we were a certainty to kick the next seven goals.” Haha, very funny, but no one is laughing now.

Still we wait. The singing is fun - “Take Me Home, Country Roads, then “Sweet Caroline”, then “The Horses”. But “Hey Jude” lacks a response as many spectators, including the only other Dees supporters in my section, leave the ground. The scoreboard goes blank, then it starts up: Lions 00.00 00, Demons 00.00 00. With the lights finally coming back on, I declare confidently: “So there you go, next goal wins!” No laughs. Upon restart, the Dees kick the first goal. I stand up, face the nest of Lions and say: “Game’s over, nice to meet you,” and pretend to leave. That gets a few smiles at least.

My team may have lost, but at least years later, I’ll be able to say: “I was there when …”

That song and Sweet Caroline are two of their players’ goal celebration  songs. Their music guy totally phoned it in because during the outage they played those two songs several times each and nothing else. We also made up some chants along the lines of Your Stadium Sucks and Give us the Olympics, and a long drawn out Suuunnnncccooorrrp! 😁

The bay directly behind and overlooking us was filled with their fans. They tried drowning us out but gave up when they realised we were a bay full of energiser bunnies, on speed. 🥳

Where was Yze's  response when we were getting belted in the centre last night coaches these days just seem to wait till a break comes, if Harmes gets a game next week it is laughable, bring in Schache for Tmac, JVR for Melk. but we will stick with the same.

I dont think much happens without Goodwins approval and he's the Maggie Thatcher of the AFL( an autocrat who's " not for changing")

Unless you're Max on the boundary in W.A. of course.

Where has Choco gone anyway..too much input for someone's liking ?
