Geelong are seen as masters of trade and free agency deals and they have performed extremely well for over a decade. I Thought I would have a closer look at our own performance in this area.

Steven May - A master stroke play by the club. Defence was an area of weakness in 2018 and the club took some what of a risk with May who had proven his worth at GFC, but had a few question marks in regards to behaviour and attitude despite being a club captain. Definitely not high risk, but a risk considering we paid big dollars for him.  The club took full advantage of the Hogan situation here. Big win!

Jake Lever - the club was right into Lever in his draft year but went with Trac and Angus. Lever had done his knee in his draft year and fell to the Crows, but we continued to pursue him and drafted Lever after the 2017 season. Was somewhat a risk. Past injuries, not fitting a traditional key back role, but had great work ethic and was seen as a club leader from an early age - Big win

Michael Hibberd - Essendon were cherry ripe for the taking after their cheating scandal and Hibberd was/is the perfect prototype the club were after. Strong and tough backman to played on small to medium/tall forwards. Never gives up. Big win

Jake Melksham - high draft pick with talent who was inconsistent at the Bombers. Goodie knew him well and brought him across. Had some big games, and contributed well to this club. Came to us when no one would. I call this a win, despite the hate he gets on here.

Adam Tomlinson - at GWS was never afforded a position to play regularly. With great endurance height and size, was seen as the prototype midfielder and the club needed  a wingman. We got him and whilst never living up to his hype, has been adaptable and serviceable. Was great as a backman prior to doing a knee. Neutral with this trade. Cost us with money and length of contract, but at the time was a good move and has not hurt the club

Ed Langdon - A winger who had a great year at Freeo and was next to Hill who took all the hype at the time. The club loved his endurance, work ethic and we got him for a steal. Disposal was seen as poor but with his work ethic, this is no longer an issues. Big win I put up there with May.

BBB - For some reason was not afforded the respect by Norf and other clubs and the MFC got a KPF which was our weakness. Whilst not a big bulking forward to suit our game plan, BBB has adapted and has been all class. He was significant in getting us a flag. Significant win

Luke Dunstan - good depth and cost nothing - neutral at this stage, but can’t be a loss due to his cost.

Grundy - too early to call. Big potential trade win and is significantly better than Jackson at this stage. I’m Making this assessment by looking at  past performance. IMO Brody was better than Jackson in his 4th year of AFL and Jackson will not get an AA or club BF.

Lachie Hunter - too early to call. Big potential. Hunter was/is one of the best wingman at his best. If it fails, he cost nothing. So can’t be a loss.

Schache - too early to call, could be a good move by the club despite where this ends up. Depth player and better than Weid. Could be a big win. Either way can’t be a loss.

Overall it’s an A plus to the club and football department with trades. Kudos to all

Not sure about the A+.

There have been a few players that have come and gone (excl retirements) in the last 10 years...

$1 blocks of land will do that.

Carlton's De koning and McGovern are in the last season of their contracts.  Will be interesting( Kosi Pickett) to see who stays and who leaves; if any.

I figure that with the money that McGovern came to the Blues on, either he’ll need to take a massive pay cut or will be moved on to fit De Koning et al. into their cap. Not much of a loss for them, as he has done SFA since arriving from the Crows.

I don't think Jake or any Dees player gets "hate" on DL.

Yes, they might not be seen as great, or being in the side each week, but not hate.

Hate is very personal about a person and most of us don't even know the players, other than what is seen of their footy, so I don't see criticism of their current footy ability as "hate".

They have a 5 time all Australian basically playing for free.  Maybe when he retires.

I do remember Jake coping it from a few on here for his looks a while back. It was extremely personal.

Game day threads can definitely get heated too. Especially if you’re a whipping boy/player.

No doubt about whipping boys.

I just don’t accept the word “hate” as a description for how posters on DL feel about certain Dees players.

No.  Hocking went from Geelong (GM Football) to AFL HQ (GM Football) and recently back to Geelong (CEO) and the player perks continue...

You don’t post in the match day threads do you?

i LOATHED the jake melksham acquisition at the time, but - as i was told by those that know - you cough up a second rounder for jake one year so that you get his best mate hibb the following year for the same 'cost'

of course, when he kicked that glorious goal from 50 off two steps to put the hawks back in their place in the 2018 finals series all was forgiven and since then he's been one of my favourite journeymen performers, particularly when he is still capable of doing things and turning it on like he did against the bluebaggers in 2022

Not a lot, but I don’t believe I would see “hatred”.

I would imagine “dislike” for footy ability, but not “hatred” for a person.

If people are hating a player simply because of his sporting ability, that is pathetic.

Amen to that Mr. Leg.

Oh, it is pathetic, but it’s there. It’s beyond dislike, it’s prevalent, usually anonymous.

Melksham only getting a game because of his friendship with the coach was the entry level into the ‘hate’ for him over his journey here. Then he must have ‘info/pictures on the coach’ as a common ‘joke’ on here would be the gateway to much worse.

If it’s not hate, it’s certainly aggressive. Misdirected anger towards players like Melksham occurs too often. Anyway you look at it. It’s not ok or defensible.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
