Most interesting point is Port dont appear to have anything to offer/trade and Crows already recruited forward star Rankine for gazillions of cash.

That leaves WA sides.

Good chance he re-signs and goes for the big coin in his mid twenties.

I do wonder if he wants to stay what would the holdup be on just signing a contract and having it out of the way given he may dislike attention and constant media harassment.

His management would have put what they want long ago, the club would agree or counter offer, negotiate, agreement reached and all done.

Only possible reasons I can think of:

1. Wait until part way through season when great form increases value but this is offset by possible bad form or injury.

2. Negotiators on one side or the other can not read or send emails.

3. He genuinely does not know if he wants to stay or not - seems unlikely by now surely.

4. Club holding off announcing for a maximum impact time - increase members sign up - seems cynical manipulation.

4. He knows he wants to go so will wait until end of season.

I cannot think of any other scenarios so fear he may be gone next year.

6. Instructed his manager to open negotiations only once the number of Demonland comments on his contract surpasses 6,000 like Jacko

1. Freo: no draft capital
2. Port: no draft capital
3. Adelaide: Rankine, Rachelle....no need for Pickett?
4. WCE: Unlikely to part ways with a potential top 4 pick for a small forward you'd suspect

Intriguing stuff

This is where the NBA model could be interesting / you can trade picks up to 7 years into the future, either protected or unprotected (ie conditional).

With player power on the rise AND many clubs looking to do the best thing by their players (like Melbourne with Jackson), there is a risk of inequality in trades with the current set of drafting rules.

Expand the rules. It’ll be more fun too.

To keep the MFCSS cortisol levels pumping though - Trent Rivers. Out of contract and the Eagles have the draft currency.

I wouldn't want to lose him, but he is not our main priority at the moment. I think he is coverable with our depth without much of a hiccup. Are we going to get WCE Pick 5? unlikely. But maybe worth a 2nd rounder.

Pickett is a “must keep” player.   Scoring power is critical and he has delivered 40 goals across both of the last 2 years, as a 20 and 21 year old.   Plus his excitement factor is unrivaled in my opinion, but I’m biased. Kozzzzzy is a star.

From a MFCSS perspective

Headline 2024.

“AFL Responds to Pickett Trade Fiasco - From 2024 Where A Nominated Club Has Insufficient Trade Capital, Priority Picks Will Be   Given As Compensation.”

Feels about right for Rivers BUT it is a good example of how the industry over-values a draft pick.

Here is a guy we got for a mid-second round draft pick 4 years ago and;

  • he has already played 50 games (ave time for a 2nd round draft pick to pass 50 games is 8 years)
  • he has developed in a successful environment,
  • he is a premiership player,
  • he gets a regular game in a top 4 side in the competition
  • he probably has 7-10 years left in his career…

… yet he is now worth the same as we paid for him…

Footy players depreciate like BMWs.

It’s a fair assessment. He is a known quantity unlike 50% of first rounders. He has upside an potentially can hit another gear that might demand a first rounder. I reckon we can afford to sit on this one a while longer.

The media speculation wont let up until he signs. Very destabilising for the club.

Destabilising?

This isn’t Panama in the 80s, it’s a good player that is sought after.

With Oliver and Petracca signed up through the decade, and us being generally [censored] forever - we have zero frame of reference for how to behave when good players come out of contract.

Its embarrassing really.

For his size he can kick a decent distance.

The fact is the club has done everything to sign Kozzy up within its list management strategy. You don’t let someone like Kozzy stay on the market this long. I would suggest they are re evaluating its list strategy to up the anti (if not already).

Are they offering more midfield time as a sweetener just like Brayshaw?

The club went hard on Oliver and Trac and they signed.  The anxiety from many is warranted. There  a is real chance he will go. Hopefully the percentages are in our favour.

Kayne doesn’t let this go. Going with it for the past 2 nights in SEN.

I've heard him go on about this several times and he always says Kozzie hates Melbourne (the place, not the Club). But what is his source for that comment? As an aside, did anyone on here interact with Kozzie at the family day and how was his demeanor?

Sad.  We live in a world where media knobs who talk into a mic would struggle to get decent employment outside of  sport or corporate politics.

It works and thats why its sad.

I thought if he left it’s more likely to WA. Grew up there and has more family there. Only lived in SA for a couple of years I believe.

Think it's the other way around.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
