Not sure about the travel in the second half of the season, as the Rounds are 1, 6, 13 and 16. My guess is we will play Freo at Optus in Round 2.

Whatever the highest percentage that is mathematically possible is then that is the percentage of probability that we are traveling interstate in Round 2.

This we DO know…

Now they're saying Magic Round to be released tomorrow.

Round 1 to be released on the weekend apparently. The fixture has never been released on the weekend so I'm calling BS.

Something is holding up the 'Gather' Round 6 fixture which was scheduled for release on Tuesday.  I wonder if is clubs squabbling over whose Home game it will be?  And whether it is compensated somewhere else?  Or stuff like that.

It shouldn't matter whose home game it is in this 'Gather Round', aside from the two unlucky teams that get drawn to play the South Australian sides. The two South Australian teams obviously get an additional home game too. This is all because they're not playing a Showdown in this round (which they really should in order to be as equitable and fair as possible).

For all other 14 teams, the only difference is 7 have to wear white shorts (and potentially an alternative guernsey) and 7 home shorts and guernseys. Normal 'home game' benefits regarding member attendance doesn't apply with this round.

Teams still play 11 home and 11 away games each apart from this.

Could be worse.

Geez id be annoyed if i was blues or dogs and playing an extra away game

Guess that means we play Essendon twice for the first time since 2005?

Not necessarily. We have played the once a few times early in the season and then there hasn’t been a return fixture. We also been the away team against them an inordinate amount of times of the past 2 decades.

I’m happy with that result. Could have been a home game against an interstate team.

In addition we’re playing Adelaide Oval and haven’t been shunted to some suburban hellhole.

However if this concept is a success and the clubs are happy with the money generated then next year it will most certainly be our turn to be the home team as you would assume that clubs will have to alternate the home and away games.

We are the third match on the Adelaide oval. Hopefully it holds up and there are no injuries. Wouldn’t want to be a Collingwood or saints player with a dodgy knee.

Looks like Geelong win the playing a WA team lottery and save them a trip to Perth.  Unlikely that if they play the Eagles again it will be in WA.

Good news! Playing on Adelaide oval not some suburban ground and a Sat arvo game. Shouldn’t result in any 5 day breaks

*apologies for the positivity on the fixture thread. I’ll do better next time

At this rate the AFL will release the full fixture on Christmas Day. Can't let Santa have all the attention!

Apart from maybe Richmond v Sydney, what a dull round!

Agree.

For the general SA and visiting i/state public there is no other match that seems worth attending.

Almost as if the bigger Vic clubs didn't want to play each other and loose a gate taking bounty back in Melbourne.  Ditto the rivalry WA, NSW and Qld 'derbies'.  The only Vic teams that play each other are Ess vs Dees and Coll vs Saints which are unlikely to be big drawcards.

As for the opening night:  9th vs 14th (2022 ladder).

Missed opportunity to max out crowds for the festival. There is a real risk of it being an attendance fizzer.   Our game might be one of the highest drawing crowds.

From a crowd drawing point of view, I reckon it would have been smarter to fixture us vs Freo:  The Jackson showdown!!!!  And, at least another serious Vic vs Vic game.

Edit:  just noticed Port play WBD so that might draw a good crowd as AFL would be hoping the WBD fans will hop across the border so that is a sensible match up.

In my book everyone on DL gets one thread/topic where they go unnecessarily over the top with negativity and this one is mine 😉

Can't see many people outside SA travelling there to watch their game or most other games.  Eagles fans fly to be flogged by Geelong?  Freo fans to go to some backwater to play GCS?  Lions or North fans to go to some backwater to watch a training run for Lions?  Collingwood fans to watch Saints?  etc etc.

I had thought the idea was to attract huge crowds to this 'Festival'.  Can't see it happening.

A crowd drawing festival would include at lest some of the 'rivalries':

  • Adelaide vs Port
  • Freo vs Eagles
  • Syd vs GWS
  • Bris vs GCS
  • Haw vs Ess
  • etc

Boring name, boring fixture!

An own goal in the making for the AFL!

I would wait and see what accommodation looks like closer to the date and the gauging may peter out.

Just assumed that clubs that play each other in Gather Round will play each other again, as there is actually no genuine home team in the fixture i.e. - the home team doesn't collect the gate proceeds.

I could be wrong and we once again play Essendon just once.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
